“We LOVE Concordia!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2012

This was our second stay at Concordia Eco Tents and like the last time it was amazing!! This side of the island is "laid back" and very mellow. Island time as they say. Concordia staff is very friendly and helpful, the eco tents are always very clean upon arrival. Keep in mind this is not a ritzy 5 star resort nor is it camping. The eco tents are made of extremly hard canvas and the premium units have a loft with two twin size beds and down stairs are two more twin size beds (some units this can be made into king by slidding together) fully equiped kitchen and futon couch, bathroom has toilet and shower powered by solar not the best but does the job and the deck has a view that captivates the eye. There are plenty of stair here at concordia so be ready but we dont mind the stairs especially after eating all the local island foods we always need the excersize, lol.. The pool is very large and clean, there is a washer dryer on site so you dont even have to pack that much clothes, they even provide the detergent. Cafe Concordia is the restaurant and serves pretty good food. A few nights we stood there they have movie night on the big screen at the pavilion. We love everything concordia, the management is exceptional and we look forward to going back again and again and again...

Room Tip: Premium Units 13,14,15 and 16 are the best

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2012

Stayed here for our last night on St John. It was very quiet as it was off season in June. Truly wonderful. We had stayed a night at Maho Bay campground earlier in the week and were mentally prepared for upscale camping. We were happily surprised that these tents were much, much nicer than Maho Bay. Something about having your own bathroom makes it more like a hotel. Also, the distance between tents is much greater than at Maho creating more privacy. So, while I would probably not return to Maho (assuming my finances allow me upgraded sleeping options), I would definately return to Concordia.

The tents and platform are very elaborate and clearly well designed. There is a main tent with three beds and kitchen in the lower level. There is a small loft with two more beds. The beds can be folded up to provide a large sitting area. There is a second tent with a solar shower and composting toilet. There is a deck that connects the two tents with an outdoor sitting area. The sitting area is very private, but has a great view of the ocean and Drunk Bay.

The kitchen has six place settings of silverware, plates, and cups. It also has basic cooking equipment – two burner propane stove, pots, etc. There is even a cup top coffee maker with coffee filters (bring your own coffee). Water for cooking is available, but need to carry potable water from the reception area.

Our kids had no problems with the composting toilet, but the solar shower was difficult to control temperature. But that helps with water conservation (smile)

For folks that are not familiar with St John, Concordia is on the east end of the island. While the Island is only 10 miles long, the drive from Concordia back to Cruze Bay is about 40 minutes. It is only 10 minutes to Coral Bay which has a few restaurants and a small convenience store. There is also a restaurant (very good!), bar, and convenience store at Concordia.

The staff were wonderful. The hostess at the restaurant let our kids draw up the menu board for the night (even patiently pulling all the permanent markers from their collection). Everyone we talked with loved the place and had a passion for green living.

Positives:
- Great views! Really magical as it is really isolated without any development around it.
- 15 minute walk to Salt Pond beach
- Very close to nature
- Pool on-site
- Good restaurant on site

Negative
- While there are good breezes (it is relatively high on the hillside), it was a bit hot in our tent in June

This is really a unique place and I would recommend that everyone (even if you would never consider camping a vacation) try this for a night or two.

Room Tip: Tents A1-3 probably have best ocean views (and longest walk from reception)

Stayed in premium Eco Tent in June-- location was perfect -- a lot of high winds, which kept Mosquitos out, and we had beautiful views of Ram's Head and Salt Pond.

We enjoyed our stay at Concordia in a Premium Eco Tent. The view was beautiful, the breeze was good and sleeping was comfortable but we are from Miami and used to the warm weather. Concordia is a huge step-up in comfort from Maho Bay. Maho is very nice, but better suited for someone 18 - 30 yrs. old. Overall, I would recommend Concordia to a friend.

You've read all the other reviews, so I'll just tell you the do's, don'ts, positives & negatives.

Do - rent a Jeep in St. Thomas and bring it by the car ferry to St John. Do NOT rent from Budget - they are awful!! Use Amalie Car Rental - they are popular and book-up early, so don't wait. You will need a Jeep for some of the roads down to the snorkeling sites.
-If you plan on cooking in your tent, buy food in Red Hook. There is a big grocery store on Hwy 30 just West of town. The tent has enough plates and utensils for 4 people, plus has pots/pans, can opener, cork screw!
-I recommend units P-15 thru P-17. They don't let you reserve a specific room, but ask for the East Side. The Eco tents right above P-15 - P-17 are also in a good spot and the only difference seems to be that you can see the Premium tents below. If the view is super-important, go with Premium, if not, go w/ Eco on the East side.
-Bring the usual bug spray and camera. Plus, bring binoculars, beach towels, a roll of paper towels, a few zip-lock baggies to restore food in the refrig., a citronella candle for the porch table is nice.
-If you have room in your luggage, bring your own snorkel, fins & mask. We both wore our shortie scuba suits for flotation. We stay in the water for a least 45 - 60 minutes and the shortie helps with buoyancy and warmth.
-If you have time, take a day trip on a catamaran to Jost Van Dyke. We went with Cruz Bay Watersports at the Westin, which is a 45 minute drive from Concordia, but it was a super-good value and a nice trip.
-There is no electricity (supposedly) in the tents, but we found an outlet outside and wished we had an extension cord just to recharge phones, etc. Otherwise, you can recharge your phones in the Office.
-Bring a baggie of dry cat food if you would like to feed the 2 adorable resident cats.

Negatives - I didn't feel like the floors of the unit were very clean. I used the shower hose and a broom to wash down and scrub the bathroom floor because it looked a little dirty, but I found most of the spots were stained on. The bedroom floor didn't look clean either, so I recommend wearing your flip-flops all the time. The futon cover needed laundering, too. Otherwise, the unit kitchen, sheets and towels were neat & clean.

Positives - Concordia was peaceful, with beautiful views of Drake and Salt Pond Bays. There are lots of great snorkeling areas within a 2 - 7 miles. The compost toilet and shower worked just fine. Our toilet wasn't flushing properly the first day and they came early the next morning to fix it. The refrig worked fine, there is no freezer. Most of the staff is very nice and super-friendly (with the exception of one of the ladies in the office). When other guests leave, there is an area in the office where guests can leave items to donate to future guests, but it is down behind the counter and I had the impression (from the one unfriendly clerk) that she didn't really want to share, but I saw bug sprays, a candle and suntan lotions, etc. that you can use.

Overall, Concordia was a nice, unique experience.

Room Tip: Rooms on the east side get the best breeze. Look at the site map on their website.

Concordia was a really cool place to stay. During the day, it was spectacular! Lots to do, easy access to the beach and good snorkeling, and very attentive front desk. You can hike, swim, snorkel, lay at the beach, do yoga, relax and take in the island. It is not your typical resort where you have all the amenities. It's like 25% camping experience, 75% hotel. You have a front desk, a fridge, a pool, shower and all that, but you have outdoorsy stuff like hiking trails (which lead to the beach).

We stayed in one of the deluxe studios. The only draw backs: We could have used a mosquito net. We made the mistake of leaving all of the doors open during the day to let the breeze in and let all the bugs in. It was noted in the book the resort left in our room not to do that. Unfortunately, we read it too late. We were eaten alive the first night. We never got around to asking the front desk if they offered one be cause we were out most of the time when we thought about it and they closed at 7:30 PM. 2nd drawback - we could have used an additional fan. The 2 ceiling fans weren't powerful enough to keep us as cool as we'd have liked. The breeze wasn't as prevalent on our side of the hillside. Other than those 2 things I would go back given the opportunity. If you want to see the island or go into Coral Bay where the restaurants are I'd recommend renting a car. We didn't rent a car and managed to get there by a very expensive taxi ride which the front desk helped us to attain.

Room Tip: Rooms on toward the rocky ocean side seemed like they got more of the breeze.

St John, USVI
May 10 – 19, 2012
Concorida Campground
Unit E-9

Wonderful trade winds from the east made the warm temperatures bearable.
Unit was one of the oldest units there
Not luxurious at all, but very nice and exactly what we were looking for.
Quiet, solitude, beautiful views, great service

Office staff was fantastic…not only do they run the rental operations and the camp store, they were wonderful in the roll of concierge…..they arranged for all of our excursions and taxi transportation….they were kind, friendly, informative, efficient, and professional.

As we told Wayne, the manager of the facility, he has a GREAT staff!

Café Concordia is right behind the office. The food was absolutely fantastic. We ate almost all of our meals at this restaurant. The prices were similar to what we would pay for good seafood at home in Dallas, TX. And again, the staff was kind, friendly, personable, and hard working.

There was cooking facilities in the Unit, but we chose to eat the great food at the restaurant rather than cook, clean, and hassle with all that comes with that.

For our vacation, we were looking for someplace in the Caribbean that was quiet, some solitude, and beautiful. Concordia provided all that and more. We spent a few days during our visit just sitting on the deck of the Unit with a fantastic view of Drunk Bay and Salt Pond Bay reading a good book.

Room Tip: stay on the east side of the complex to take advantage of the trade winds

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2012

I've been there with my girlfriend during Memorial Day weekend. This was our first time in St. John and we did not want to stay in the usual resort for tourists who like exotic places as long as they can enjoy the exact same comforts they have at home. Concordia was exactly what we wanted. Studios and tents seem to be part of nature, surrounded by it. We were in studio A7, which has a superb, unobstructed view over Salt Pond Bay. The studio was clean and comfortable. It has a furnished kitchenette, like all the other units, a wide bathroom (really wide shower corner), a living room, and potable water. There is no bed in this unit, but the futon was enough for us. All the windows have screens that keep bugs outside. There is no A/C, but there are a ceiling fan and two additional portable fans. I think that not having A/C is the right choice, since nights become nicely cool, fans provided additional cool air if needed, and A/C in general needs too much power.
I like very much the attention to minimize the impact on nature, with solar panels, compost toilets, and phosphor-free soaps. Unfortunately, the little store at Concordia only sells sunscreen lotions containing oxybenzone, which is not only bad for your skin, but also for nature, when is washed off. At night, nature noises are pretty loud, but not as annoying as noises produced by people like the 2 guests in the studio above ours (just on the last night, though).
We ate at the restaurant only on our first night and food and drinks were good. Breakfasts are minimal, with bagels, jam, yaourt, boiled eggs (although you cannot be sure of when they were boiled, since after breakfast they're kept in fridge in the office), and coffee.
Personnel is very friendly and helpful.
There is a 10-15 hike down a trail leading to the beach. Or you can drive a couple of miles to a parking lot, and then walk down a wide path to the beach.
Overall, I warmly recommend this place, but it's not for everybody. If you're the kind of person that loves A/C, doesn't like or can't move or walk too much, likes nature when it's far away and well domesticated, then this is not a place for you.
