If you are comfortable in the water, a short swim to Waterlemon Cay will give you the best snorkeling experience on St John

Like a Mayan ruin, very cool to see the remains of a sugar, molasses and rum processing plantation. Neat ruins, easy access up wooden steps and exceptional views.

As some may have said, this is not a "beach" stop. There really isn't a good area to hang out in a beach chair. You go for the snorkeling. We hiked in from the ruins, and had no problems. We swam out to the island which was fine for all of us, no challenges. Once you leave the beach, you swim over this sort of deserted area for a few minutes and then you hit the reef. Really cool to see the drop off. We didn't see any of the trophy sites, but it was worth the trip

I’ve snorkeled here twice now and both times did not disappoint. We’ve seen a spotted eagle ray and several standard gray rays, star fish, and jelly fish; beautiful coral and purple sea fans and SO much more. It’s a hike but it is so well worth it! You will not be disappointed!

I've hiked out (about a mile from the parking lot) to Waterlemon Cay on two different trips to St. John, and both times loved the snorkeling. Lots of variety in fish and coral, and a couple of turtles in the bay on my more recent trip. The further out you go along the Cay, the better it gets, especially once you're more than half way along the island. As other reviewers have noted, there is a strong current on the ends of the Cay and on the windward side so it's not as good a place to snorkel if you're not a strong swimmer. The hike is also nice as the trail is flat and well-shaded. If you're looking for an easier place to snorkel (though you need a jeep to get there), try Little Lameshur Bay on the South Shore. Though the snorkeling isn't quite as good as Waterlemon Cay, there's parking right at the beach, and less current in the water. Lameshur is also a better place to visit on days when the north shore of St. John has a strong current or strong winds because it's more protected.
