We live in a mountain town and hike regularly so we did not think the hike was hard and made it down and back in about 2.5 hours and that's with the side trip to the waterfall/petroglyphs and reading the signs. But I could see how it would be difficult for non hikers, but it is well worth it. The trail is maintained very well. The grade would be the hardest part, not the footing. We loved the intereprative signs and didn't feel like we needed a ranger. The side trip to the waterfall/petroglyps was worth it and the sugar mill and the beach were fun. I am glad St. John offers so many trails and this one is very worth the time.
