Owner description: This 2.2-mile hiking trail is one of the best on St. John: descend through a shady, moist forest and a dry forest, through visible remains of four sugar mills, pass by pre-Columbian petroglyphs, and end at a beautiful, pristine beach.

The non-beach goers on our party really enjoyed this down hill walk thru the forests of St John. However, others couldn't wait to get back into the water. The guide was knowledgeable and a lot of fun....but if a member of the group is a slow hiker then it can result in a very slow hike. The beach at the end of the route is very rocky...but it was fun swimming to the ship that returns you to St. John (this swim was optional, but it looked better than getting stuffed in a little dingy). Yes, you need to make reservations about 1 week ahead of time, at least in the summer. There was no problem coming from St Thomas, just make sure you are on the 8am ferry. All in all, I think a day at the beautiful St John beaches might have been better...or just spend more than 1 day.

Rainy and warm that day but learned so much. Petroglyphs awesome. National Parks rock. Rangers were friendly and informative at the visitors center.

Great hiking trail. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes. The trail has some slick rocks, roots, and is an actual trail not a gravel path. The hike back out was an uphill climb but not terrible. My 8 year old son made it out just fine. The petrogylphs were cool just be careful on the slick rocks there too.

This was a beautiful hike! Very long, but beautiful! I was amazed at the way the different trees grew. It reminded me of something straight from a Harry Potter movie. Enjoyed it tremendously! Shocked at the number of hermit crabs all over the place! I'll admit being out of breath on the way back up.

This was a fun thing to do on St. John. The hike down took about an hour and back up twice as long, but it was fun. I liked seeing the petroglyphs and the ruins at the bottom are good to see too. On the day that we went, we went early in the morning and it was sprinkling most of the morning. We could hear the rain, but could barely feel it because we were protected under the tree canopy. :) It's a good adventure to do if it's not great beach weather.
