Owner description: This 2.2-mile hiking trail is one of the best on St. John: descend through a shady, moist forest and a dry forest, through visible remains of four sugar mills, pass by pre-Columbian petroglyphs, and end at a beautiful, pristine beach.

This was a very enjoyable experience. If you want to learn about the history of the island, this is the way to go. We went with Ranger Don who was outstanding. He provided lots of information at numerous stops along the way. Make sure you buy your ticket at least a few weeks in advance since it gets booked up. Our group was about 25 people ranging in age from about 7 to 65 years. Since this is a half day experience, it might be difficult for the very youngest visitors.

As others have said, you should not wear flip flops, but you can wear good sneakers... you don't need hiking boots. On our hike it did not rain, and there is almost always tree cover, so even though it might be warm and humid, it is not uncomfortable. If you are coming over from St. Thomas on the ferry, there are places to get breakfast, snacks, and food and water to bring in a pack for the walk. Also bring a bathing suit and towel for the swim at the end. There is a bathroom where you can change into your bathing suit.

We did the 3 miles to Reef Bay and loved it all. The Ranger, Golda, was fabulous with great local knowledge and we learned alot about plants, petroglyphs, local cuisine and the old sugar industry. The hike down was pretty easy then we took the boat back to Cruz Bay - excellent value for $30. We were lucky to get a reservation since we only went the day before so plan ahead.

I loved Reef Bay Trail. It's 3 miles each way & you can add another 1.5 miles by taking a detour toward the end. The hike up is pretty intense, all uphill & very rocky terrain. I thoroughly enjoyed the hike as it was a great start to my day! Took about 3 hours round trip. You get to see the petroglyphs and sugarmill plantation ruins. Pretty fun!

This was an enjoyable hike for us and our two 5-year olds. I think we lucked out - not hot and just some light rain. Our kids especially loved the sugar factory ruins - there were lots of crabs and bats.
The main value in the $30 NPS excursion is the boat ride back to town, to save you the uphill return hike. I admit the NPS personnel were very friendly and the boat ride was scenic, but the hiking pace was too slow and we only had 20 min to swim/snorkel at the end. In the future I'd definitely consider hiking it ourselves, to really allow more time for exploring the reef.

We took the guided hike through the National Park Service. We had a great hike, excellent information from the park ranger, a nice stop for lunch and beautiful boat ride back to Cruz Bay. We strongly recommend taking this hike with a park ranger. Make reservations early, it is definitely worth the $30.
