We didn't take the people ferry, so that may be a great experience. I can only speak to the car barge, which we took from Red Hook to Cruz Bay and back again. If you're used to taking car ferries in the continental US, you will be in for a rude awakening. You have to back onto the ferry, which was difficult, although the workers are great at guiding you, but once you're in, you're stuck there. The cars are packed so tightly you can't open your doors. You can't get out and enjoy the view, and if, God forbid, the barge were to catch on fire or sink, most of the passengers would probably die because they wouldn't be able to escape their cars. Seriously, now that I think back to it, I can't believe they are allowed to operate that way, I can't believe I allowed myself to be in such a death trap, and I can't believe there hasn't been a terrible accident. Also, the cars are packed so tightly that you are bound to hit bumpers with the person in front or behind you or trade some paint on the side. Unless you absolutely must bring a car over to St. John, or unless you're in a convertible or open-top vehicle, DON'T USE THE CAR BARGE.

Just a short ferry trip to St. John from Red Hook. A nice way to see some of the smaller islands. The baggage was handled just fine. Didn't have to worry about leaving it unattended.

Get out to Red Hook on the east end of St. Thomas and take the ferry (runs hourly) over to St. John for a day trip! Once there, you can easily catch a tourist taxi (right there at the dock) that stops at all the beaches and pick and choose which beaches to go to. We went to Hawksnest Bay (recommended by a local as less packed with people and she was right!) which was gorgeous and had some shade trees to tuck under, and then we went to Cinnamon Bay as well, which was also gorgeous. Trunk Bay looked gorgeous as well, but we ran out of time. The taxis run often and are easy to catch (so convenient too-avg. $4-6 per ride). The hilly terrain is quite the experience! The ferry is easy and inexpensive. A great way to get a taste of St. Johns. Before, or after you see the beaches, stop at The Beach Bar, right by the ferry, right on the water. Great drinks and food there! Fun to people watch . . .

Took car ferry over to St. John and then back at the end of the week. This was great way to go so we didn't gave to schlep our luggage everywhere- just stowed in the back of rental jeep at airport and then unloaded when we reached our hillside villa on St John. Never had to leave the car.
