We booked a 2 bedroom condo through the owner via VRBO. Our dealings with the owner and the property manager were excellent. We paid $3300 for a week during peak season, which was the most reasonable rate I could find for any of the 2-bedroom Grande Bay condos.

I want to limit my review here to the property itself. The kitchens are outfitted with stainless steel appliances and granite; however, you can tell that some of the work was done cheaply. The bathrooms were small and included faux-tile, which I did not expect for a property that is supposed to be luxurious. Also, neither of our bathrooms had tubs (which I imagine would be quite an incovenience if traveling with small childres; other units may differ) or lighting in the small shower, which I thought was odd. We also thought the pool was small, and it gets very little directly sun, so it's not as useful as we'd hoped. We spent most of our time at the beach, but wanted to enjoy the pool at the end of the day. That didn't really work out for us.

With all of that said, though, based on extensive research when choosing where we'd stay, I still think Grande Bay was our best bet. It is far less expensive than other high end options like Gallows Point or Caneel. Yet, it is extemely convenient to the night-life of Cruz Bay, which was important to us. We did rent a car to explore the island and travel out to the beaches. We probably could have gotten along with just using a taxi, although I never priced the cost of a trip out to the beaches. I give this property a 4/5 based primarily on location and based on comparison of it to other accomodations in Cruz Bay.

However, it is not as nice as the accomodations we've had in Mexico or Maui for similar costs, which is probably why I was a bit disappointed.

We stayed in a one-bedroom penthouse condo at Grande Bay in early Feb 2012. We rented it directly from the owner. All paperwork and stay went perfectly. Very close to town so you can walk in a minute or two to shopping, restaurants, groceries, bars/entertainment, and a scuba shop just below! We were provided their garaged parking spot that had an elevator right to our front door. We brought a rental SUV over from St. Thomas at the airport. Budget will let you do that. We wanted the freedom to explore the island on our own and didn't want to hassle with taxis/ luggage transfers, etc. Grande Bay has a 24 hour on duty receptionist to answer questions, help with any issues, and even fill your cooler for the day on the beach. This came in very handy and is a service that should not go untold as we used it every day. The Grande Bay is a pretty new development and our condo was like new and furnished nicely with a full kitchen, decks overlooking Cruz Bay. Perfect.
After having explored the whole island, I can say that we really liked our choice of Cruz Bay and Grande Bay resort. I definitely would return here for our next trip to St. John.

Room Tip: The penthouses have high ceilings and great views, but I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong in...

From booking to check out, the people at Grande Bay took excellent care of us. Always with a smile, always with an extra piece of advice if we wanted it. Paul and his staff are very eager to help in any way possible. Even seeing these folks on the street after hours, they make a point of knowing your name and saying hello.

The unit was one of the smaller one bedrooms (so be sure to ask for the larger if you can get it), but it had everything you could need. Well stocked - including a bottle of rum and cokes and water. Bed was very comfortable! The kitchen is well laid out, tho with the smaller unit we didn't have a dining table. Our only complaint was that there was no coffee table so no place to put your feet up at the end of the day while watching the very nice flat screen TV, but Paul said they are getting coffee tables soon. Washer/dryer was also a big plus and they provide Tide - as much as you want.

New beach towels daily at the front desk and coffee and danish upstairs in the sales office. The location of Grande Bay is ideal - you can walk to everything in Cruz Bay - the "downtown" of St. John and it's the only place in Cruz Bay that has parking which is probably the biggest selling point I could mention. Parking is beyond a premium! The views are super here too. We did not have time to take advantage of the gym or the pool, but both look clean and other folks seem to enjoy them, tho it was NOT over crowded and we were there in high season. The buildings are very well insulated. We had a unit on the front street and though there is a beach bar across the street, you'd never know it when you shut the sliding glass door.

We'd go back in a skinny minute!

Room Tip: ask for the larger 1 bedroom - they have 2 options in a 1 bedroom

We would have you back in a "skinny minute"! Thank you for the kind words and positive review. Beyond the fact that Cruz Bay is a small town greeting new friends and old acquaintances is the "right ting to do mon".

This was the first time we visited St. John. We choose to stay at Grande Bay Resort because we wanted to be in Cruz Bay and did not want to rent a car. We were greeted by Colby and James at the Cruz Bay dock. They drove us to the resort garage which was a very short ride. Colby took us to our studio suite. He talked about the resort and went to get us a cooler of ice. We had a water view of all the boats docked in Cruz Bay. The beach is across the street from the resort but it is a beach for walking thru, sunbathing, or read a book. Go swimming at the north shore beaches.

We loved our studio suite! It was very clean, spacious, felt brand new and décor in white. Our little kitchenette was stocked with plates, glasses, utensils, paper towels, and dish soap. The appliances were a mini frig, microwave, blender, and coffee maker. The closet was stocked with beach towels, a large black beach bag (this was very convenient), two large umbrellas (used once), and a safe. We had a sitting area with sofa with a flat screen tv and a comfortable queen bed. The bathroom was stocked with the best toiletries that I have ever used, L'Occitane en Provence and plush towels. The balcony had table and chairs which overlook the Cruz Bay.

We went to the pool area which is located on the third floor of the main building. It was quite nice with lounge chairs and a hot tub was great with really strong jets. We met and talked to other people staying here as well. Also, there is a lounge with free Keurig coffee/tea and mini danishes in the morning.

The location and wonderful staff are the reasons we would stay here again. We walked everywhere to restaurants, the dock, and Mongoose Junction. Walking around in Cruz Bay in the evening was fine. The restaurants that were next door to the resort were the Beach bar, Banana Deck, and Cactus on the blue (went here for dinner). Also, nearby were a Catholic Church, and a convenience store. Also, it is walking distance to Frank Bay (a local told us about this deserted rocky beach that was nearby) and Coconut Coast Studios.

The concierge staff was so helpful and friendly! They gave us suggestions on restaurants and beaches to go to. One morning I asked them where to go to pick up sandwiches for our hiking trip, and immediately was given a phone number for Deli Grotto. He even offered to give me his cell phone to use to call the deli before picking up the sandwiches. They even dropped us off at the dock on our last day. We stayed here for four nights, which was not enough. Housekeeping came once to clean during our stay (third day). Staying at Grande Bay felt very private and quiet, which was an excellent choice for us.

All I can say is I wish I were still there. We loved the location, we were upgraded from a 2 bedroom to a 3 bedroom, we had a lovely balcony, which was nice to watch the boats coming in and out of the harbour. Loved that we could walk to restaurants and shops. The last day we walked from our condo to Soloman Bay, Honeymoon bay and Caneel Bay.
We were celebrating a significant birthday and anniversary, They left a bottle of champagne in our room to help celebrate. Paul and his staff were always there to accommodate . You can get ice , beach chairs and clean beach towels at the front desk, not to mention coffee and pastries every morning. The unit was newly decorated. We have been to St. John several times, rented a house previous time. We had some reservations before booking, thought it might be too noisy, being so close to Cruz Bay, it wasn't . We will defitenly be back .

Room Tip: Higher floor with a corner room.

We just completed our first trip to St. John over the Christmas to New Year's week and stayed at Grande Bay. The resort accommodations and staff were just truly exceptional! The resort is very close to downtown Cruz Bay and allowed us walk downtown to a different restaurant every night. Our balcony overlooked Cruz Bay and allowed us, everything morning to watch the ferry boats come in and out of the harbor and allowed us to watch the pelicans fish. Incredible! The staff helped us out on every front, with restaurant reservations, car rental reservations and the resort allowed us to park our rental in its secure below resort deck without charge. Perfect!
We had a wonderful time and would recommend Grande Bay to anyone!
