We stayed four nights at The Gallows in June, ground floor ocean view. The resort was beautifully landscaped and well maintained. We slept like the dead the entire trip beds super comfortable. Our unit was right next to the pool/hot tub. The jets did not work, but it was heated. The pool was clean and you get a great view of the ocean. Despite the resort being at full capacity it did not feel crowded. There is a small gym with treadmill, elliptical, free weights, bench and cable machine.
There is great snorkeling right off the dock area at the hotel, and you can rent a mask/fins from the resort gift shop for $10. Beach chairs are free to use/take with you for the day. Two washers/dryers on site I packed tide pods from home but there is laundry detergent for sale in gift shop. Purified water station also available on site - we brought refill bottles.
We did not eat at the resort restaurant but it looked nice. The resort is walking distance to many things in Cruz Bay and we did not need a car rental. Taxis are pretty inexpensive to get to the popular beaches, average $6/7 each way. You can get a taxi pretty much anytime by walking less than 10 minutes to the Red Hook ferry terminal, there is always someone ready to take you wherever. We went to Starfish market to get groceries, but if you need a snack or drinks, eggs, fruit there is a convenience store right next to the church in town. Some other island tips:
1. Best snorkeling is at Maho, Trunk Bay near the rock formations and Honeymoon Beach. However we saw the most sea turtles and sting rays at Salt Pond.
2. Cinnamon Bay and Salt Pond do not have food/snack bar and either port a potty restrooms or no restrooms. Pack a picnic lunch.
3. Can take short hike over to Drunk Bay from Salt Pond it’s worth it! The taxi ride out to Salt Pond is $20 each way pp and takes about 40 minutes. The road is a curvy bumpy trip if you are prone to car sickness you might want to take something before you start out there.
4. Best restaurant recommendations - Morgan’s Mango and Extra Virgin. Order the mushroom pappardelle at Extra Virgin everyone agreed that was the best thing eaten. I was calling out 10 days in advance for reservations and having a hard time getting a spot. Book way in advance for your dinners! The island is short staffed, so smaller amount for tables, etc. Some others we talked to liked Terrace. Irie Pops for boozie smoothies are delicious!! Drink bar right up the street had nice happy hour and perfect view of the sunset.
5. There are lots of ATMs on the island but just bring cash/small bills to get around. Taxis do not take credit cards.
You’ll be so happy you stayed at Gallows Point. We will be back.More
