stayed @ Gallows from August 3-7th - stayed here based on all the positive reviews. The reviews were mostly very accurate. Stayed in 7A, directly above the walk down to the beach (beach good snorkling, not much more). The room was very nice, large and everything we were looking for. Bed was made every day as well as dishes cleaned and overall appearance kept tidy. New towels daily. Provided was complimentary bottle of rum, and the hotel provides beach chairs and a cooler for your use. Staying @ Gallows is excellent for the location. Easy walk down to Cruz bay and Mongoose junction. No need to drive @ night going into town. Best thing about Gallows was out flight was delayed 8 hrs - Gallows let us stay in our room until 4 pm (5 hrs past check out) and did not charge. Very considerate on there part.
About St. Johns - nicest Carribean island my wife and I have been too. Rent a car (all set up by Gallows) and check out the different beaches.
Best snorkling (by far!) was @ Waterlemen Cay bay. About 20 minute drive to get to (drive to Annaberg ruins) then 1/2 mile trail walk to isolated area. Able to snorkle with Sea Turtles, sting rays, and saw amazingly large starfish.
Food - ate @ Fish trap (good, not great), Morgan's Mango (ok), and another Italian place on beach (good). Few posts talked about Joes for lunch - NOT recommended!
Bar - best bar was the beach bar - excellent frozen drinks and very close walk to Gallows.
Overall, we had an excellent time on St. Johns and would highly recommend Gallows to anyone deciding on going. Not only for hotel area itself but also for prime location

I just came back from a 3 night stay at Gallows Point resort. It was a last minute trip so I read up as much as I could on tripadvisor and narrowed my options down to GP and the Westin.

This was our first trip to St. John and so we weren't sure what to expect. With Caneel Bay and Westin on the island, we figured there was some luxury to be had, although in all honesty we were going down to St.John mainly for the beaches and snorkeling.

With Gallows point having very good reviews here with the occasional "it depends on the unit" I booked a harbor lower over the phone and was assured there were other types available so that we could choose when we got there. Very friendly on the phone, gave a AAA discount, everything good. My other choice was a studio with full kitchen at the Westin - which would have been a newly renovated/constructed room. My main hesitance with the Westin was the location (further from Cruz Bay) and the review comments about how the regular rooms were run down. So Gallows Point it was...

Got down to the ferry and was picked up by their complimentary shuttle. Checked in and was given unit 11B. Walked into the unit and found it dark, dank and there was a mildew smell throughout. Furniture was tired and the kitchen didn't look much better than a campground cabin (plywood, basic electric stove, etc.) - sheets had stains and the kicker was a pile of little bugs huddled on the pillow (yes alive). We could definitely hear the ferry pulling in from this unit as well. View was ok, of the harbor. Decor was from the late 80's.

We went back up to the reception and asked for another unit, possily an ocean lower. We were given 7A, which is just a unit down from the reception. This particular unit was cleaner and looked liked the furniture was only a couple years old with more netural colors. Kitchen however was the same condition - sticky feeling cheap plywood cabinets, a fridge that was on its last leg and an electric stove. Bathroom was a little cleaner but had an awful mildew smell. Bedroom was cleaner and sheets look a little better. After the trip to get there we were tired of hunting for rooms so we decided to take this unit. I never got to see an ocean upper to see if they were any better.

I think looks are deceiving with GP - the resort has an awesome location, great views, some snorkeling right off their point and very impressive grounds and buildings. However, inside the units are worn and tired. Their construction is definitely for those who like the great outdoors and don't mind sleeping with the windows and doors open. While I love a gentle breeze, the bugs and mosquitos are insane right now - apparently St John is suffering a pretty bad mosquito infestation due to the recent rains. The locals we talked to were all complaining and the restaurants all kept bug spray under the counter for their patrons. Some people seem immune to mosquitos - unfortunately I'm apparently a Vegas neon sign for mosquitos. We tried closing up all the doors and windows and running the A/C & fans all the time but there are gaps everywhere. We fed the mosquitos all night long...

Another absolute problem - the mattress was dead. It was way beyond its useful life and had more pits than the surface of the moon. These were cheap mattresses to begin with and now the coils have given up. We both woke up with back aches every morning. I recall the mattress in 11B being no better either.

Now the few good points: everyone at GP provided excellent service and were very friendly, although some of the maid staff have some trouble with English. Location is excellent - 5 minute walk to Cruz Bay and good views. Free shuttle to the ferry. We never used the pool but it seemed good sized and relatively clean. ZoZo's is right upstairs and offers what little gourmet food this island has to offer. No kids so fairly peaceful, although be careful about restaurant noise on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights with units near the, duh, restaurant.

Summary? Gallows Point was probably a very impressive resort when first built. I think most of the units need new kitchenettes and baths, mattresses (and some units need furniture). In talking with Linda at the convenience store the owners congregate here twice a year for association meetings. I really wonder if they sleep in these units and use them or are they just raking in the bucks and refusing to spend any more than they absolutely have to? In our opinion GP is not a good value at all until they decide to renovate. We just spent twice as much on a room in Mexico the week prior and had no qualms about the value.

We stayed at Gallows Point for four days in 2A. The resort is set up in four unit buildings, with many units privately owned and run by Gallows Point. I can't speak for the other units but 2A was pretty run down. The coffee pot, toaster and blender were all broken in the kitchenette. There's no view to speak of because there's a big hedge planted right outside of the deck area which blocks the view of the ocean. The place was not as clean as it could have been and the hide-a-bed was also broken. On the up side, the location of G.P. is great for wandering into the town, very convenient to restaurants and bars. The pool area is nice, with plenty of lounge chairs, a couple of hammocks right on the beach and a hot tub. The landscaping is beautiful. The gift shop/concierge folks were very helpful with car rental, snorkels, etc. If you stay here, pick an upper unit (better view and fewer mosquitoes) and higher number (15 is right by the pool if you like that). No kids were at this resort so it was pretty quiet in August. DON'T rent a car in St. Thomas and drive over - the drive is CRAZY on the left side of the road with left handed steering and cars are easily obtained on St. John.

  • Liked — the proximity to Cruz Bay restaurants and activities
  • Disliked — the state of disrepair of our rooms
  • Tips/Secrets — Pick an upper unit, higher numbers are better than lower.

We stayed two nights in 10C before we got our rental car and we moved on to our villa rental. We loved the location. It is within a short walk to all goings on in Cruz Bay. The grounds are nicely maintained. The "beach" and deck area out back was a great place to hang out, read and watch the sunset. The snorkeling, while not anywhere near as good as other locations on the island, was good.

The room was an upstairs unit with loft. It overlooked the harbor. While the room was large, with a comfortable bed, it was a bit long-in-the-tooth. One of the dining room chairs was broken, and the other furniture had a "tired" look. Not terrible, but for $335 a night, I was expecting better. I'm not a clean freak, but the unit was not cleaned very thoroughly, with crumpled up tissues left on the tile floors and sand being left on the sofa cushions.

The service here is excellent. The front desk people we very helpful and friendly, in a reserved and understated way.

All in all, it is a nice place, probably the nicest in Cruz Bay. The excellent reviews do have me a little baffled though. It probably depends upon which unit you stay in I guess. If we were going to be there for any longer than 2 days, I would have asked for another unit. Would I stay here again? Yes, but not in 10C.

Service was good and the room (14B) had lots of amenities but the wireless signal was so poor that internet access from the room was impossible. A friend in room 10D had the same problem. Staff was unable to help. The resort had been chosen because it offered wireless internet access. Staff called & left a message offering help on the last day of the stay which was Saturday but by then it was useless because the stock market was closed. There was a computer in the lobby available but that is not the same, and it was frequently already in use.

Anyway we appreciated the complementary bottle of Cruzan Rum.

  • Disliked — Internet access had signal too weak to use from room

We have just returned from Gallow's Point and it was as fabulous as all of the reviews that I read here. I searched for days trying to find the perfect place for our 10 year anniversary. This was it....
This place is clean, spacious, quiet, and close enough to walk into town for dinner each night. We hiked trails, rented a jeep, and rented a dingy to see all the fabulous beaches . The snorkel trail at Trunk Bay is amazing but crowded. Snorkeling is good at Solomon and Honeymoon beach too. You can also snorkel right off the property at Gallows. They rent snorkel equipment for the week.
Anything that you want to do can be arranged through the hotel. The restaurant on the property has good food and a fantastic view. The food in town is wonderful .
Best food for the money was Lime Inn....Best view and romantic dinner was The Balcony and best restaraunt was by far....The Fish Trap...
The only drawback is the no see um bites....use bug spray when out in the evenings and hiking.

  • Liked — Clean and close to town
  • Disliked — I loved everything
  • Tips/Secrets — use bug spraywhen outdoors in the evenings

From the reservations process through check out, we were completely overjoyed with Gallow's Point. Crystal was patient and pleasant and wonderful helping with our arrangements and everyone on staff followed up with graciousness upon our arrival! Can't say enough about how wonderful everything was!

Our unit was 15D for most of our stay (we knew we were changing rooms because we booked only a few weeks in advance and they didn't have one room to have us for the entire stay). They made moving so easy we barely knew we did. We left our things by the door and they moved them while we were gone to the beach. All we had to do was pick up our new keys on the way back in. I realized that I had left something in my previous room (didn't pack it) and the desk sent security to pick it up and brought it to my unit within 10 minutes!!!

Our unit was beautifully decorated (they are individually owned so they are all a little different. Our friends were in 1C and it was gorgeous, as well). The kitchen had new appliances and the walk in shower was so perfect for after the beach! There were all the comforts of home... soap, shampoo, lotion and tissues. They even leave a couple of bottles of Ting, a grapefruit type soft drink (a mixer, maybe?) and a bottle of Cruzan rum on the table for you! The view from our unit was absolute perfection... we could have stayed there all week and had a beautiful vacation but we couldn't wait to get to the beaches. Trunk and Cinnamon Bays were our favorites for their beautiful shoreline and velvety sand. We saw giant rays and sea turtles at Caneel so that was our favorite snorkel spot. We always traded in our beach towels at the front desk as we came in from the beach and picked up fresh ones for the next morning!

The grounds at the Gallow's are like walking through a tropical paradise and the pool and deck areas are nice and refreshing at the end of the day. Snorkeling was good in front of the property although a little difficult to get to if you are a rookie. Let's just say that it was pretty comical to watch me climb down the stairs backwards in my fins, flailing my arms and trying not to touch a sea urchin! There are easier spots to snorkel so we didn't try THAT again, haha.

We didn't eat at ZoZo's although everyone said this restaurant at The Gallow's was supposed to be wonderful... we just liked wandering into town at night which was only a 5 minute walk. It was more like 10 minutes coming back though because it was a bit of an uphill climb and we were full of seafood by then!

Stay at Gallow's Point... I know we will definitely return!

(Also, I left my cell phone and an expensive necklace in my unit and it arrived by mail at home three days later!!! Now, that is service! Thanks, Crystal!)

(Oh and we booked 15D through Suite St. John, a company that manages several of the properties at Gallow's Point. You can book through either them or the front desk... check with both for availabililty)

  • Liked — The view, the location and the service.
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't forget your beach bag, small bills for taxi and tips and bug spray. Loved Chilly Billy's for breakfast. Loved The Fish Trap and Panni Beach, both expensive but worth it!
