“Loved our stay at Gallows Point!”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

My husband and I stayed at Gallows Point for a week in February 2014. We had an upper level oceanfront unit (8d) and it was fabulous! The kitchen and baths were nicely updated and the living room and bedroom were nice too. We loved our balcony overlooking the sea toward St. Thomas. All of the staff were fabulous. The location was perfect for us - walking to town anytime we wanted was great. We rented a jeep so we could explore the island but it was nice to always have a parking space near town when we weren't exploring. The grounds are very lush - you feel like you are in a jungle oasis rather than so close to town. As others have said, they don't have a sand beach but there are chairs and lounges that you can use. The snorkeling off the resort was pretty good - it was nice to be able to snorkel outside your resort rather than having to go someplace else all the time. If you are on the right side of the resort (facing it), you will get some noise from the Beach Bar and other bars on Cruz Bay. We have sound machine apps on our IPhones and just used those to drown it out. Weekend nights were the loudest; the rest of the evenings it wasn't bad. The little shop at the resort was good for necessities. We also ate at Ocean 362 twice and really enjoyed our meals (see separate review).

Room Tip: If you want to sleep in, we suggest a ground floor unit. We loved our upper level unit but with the...

We spent one week on the top floor of a harbor side unit. The property is great and the staff are extremely accommodating. It was so convenient to be able to walk to town for dinner and drinks every night. The property itself is very secure.
The property and grounds are gorgeous and impeccably well kept. There is a small pool and hot tub with with an incredible view of St. John. There is no sandy beach at Gallows however there are lounge chairs set up on the ocean side. The snorkeling at Gallows is great.
Our unit faced the harbor side. As some reviewers stated on some evenings the music could be loud so I would recommend some ear plugs. I became accustomed to the music after a couple nights but if you're a light sleeper it could be disturbing.
We would definitely stay at Gallows again. Hopefully next year!

Property is lovely, stayed in Harbor view unit, not my 1st choice but only unit available. This side a little too noisy to my liking but not a deal breaker. Daytime lots of boat action and nighttime bar noise. Would I stay here again, Yes! Next time will choose unit not on the Harbor. Unit was clean, although not that modern, beachy but dated.

We really loved this place for several reasons. It is a short walk to town (Cruz Bay) where there are plenty of restaurants, etc. It's not far from where the ferry lets you off. Although we did rent a car, parking is difficult in Cruz Bay, and it's very liberating to be able to just stroll over there. The car comes in handy for exploring the island, although the driving can be a bit hairy at times. Driving is on the left-hand side; roads are full of steep inclines, sharp turns, etc. If you prefer, you can easily take the beach-taxis around the island. Getting back to Gallows Point, all of the units have great views. The few that face Cruz Bay can occasionally be noisy due to a beach bar nearby that often has loud music (one couple we met asked to be moved to an oceanview room). The down-side to the ocean view room is the intense afternoon sun that heats your room up, and often forces you to use the AC, which they fortunately have. This is a minor problem and still beats shoveling snow. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and have a very private feel. The unit is totally well equipped with all the amenities including a nice kitchen, which is great if you do not want to eat out every single meal. The unit has a cooler which you can take to the beach. There is daily clean up service and they provide nice quality bathroom items (shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, and moisturizer). They also give you clean beach towels whenever you want them (which is often several times a day). There is a small pool and hot tub, and an adjacent sitting area/deck on the beach. There is not really a sandy beach at the resort, but there is a dock with easy access to the water, and the snorkeling here is really terrific- we go every afternoon even if we have snorkeled elsewhere. There is a small gift shop where you can arrange boat trips, get breakfast items, rent snorkel gear. There is a beautiful view from the bar especially at sunset although the drinks we had there were not great. We had a few appetizers at the bar, and based on that did not eat at the restaurant, although the view from there was fantastic. All in all, a very easy and nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Ocean view has less noise from town

I stayed here recently for 6 days for a winter getaway. I stayed in room 5B. Wow! What a view! Building 5 probably has one of the best views of the entire Gallows Point. It was just great to relax on the patio and listen to the waves and watch the blue/green ocean. Despite the views, there were a few con's. Here's the breakdown:

Pro's: great views, probably one of the best snorkeling spots on the entire island (and directly accessible from the hotel), maintenance was very prompt fixing a leaking toilet, the bell staff and front desk staff were very professional and accommodating, Ocean 362 (the onsite restaurant) has stunning views but is a bit pricier on the entrée prices.

Con's: 5b had super views, but the upgrades to it are really cheap (we were lucky enough to visit a few of the other units--all which I thought were more nicely renovated than 5b). The bedding was terrible and the pillows and blankets had yellow stains all over. The bathroom was leaking from both the toilet and the shower and the fixtures were the cheapest ones you can buy at Home Depot. There was also a lot of noise from the neighboring A/C units and Ocean 362, so sleeping at night was not too peaceful. If the owners spent a little more on renovating the unit, it would be super fab!

Overall, I definitely recommend this property for the location (very easy walk to Cruz Bay for shopping, dining, water sports), staff and views. Most of the rooms were beautifully decorated and the grounds were kept up well.

We have stayed at Gallows at least 5 times and it never disappoints us. It is very conveniently located in Cruz Bay, within walking distance to all restaurants, shopping, and the ferry dock. The staff is phenomenal and was very helpful assisting with our wedding vow renewal. From arranging taxis to ordering a surprise birthday cake for my husband (and delivering it to our refrig while out to dinner) , anything we needed was a phone call or short visit to the "concierge" away!! Our room upper ocean view room was clean and redecorated. The views were unbelievable. The front desk staff is lovely, friendly, and helpful. The housekeeping staff is very friendly. A simple good morning shared goes a long way and oh what beautiful smiles you see!! I would probably never stay anywhere else on St John!
(thank you Aubrey, Marsha, Marcy, and my buddy William!!!)

Room Tip: any unit away from the harbor and the center of the resort will probably be the most quiet

This a beautiful resort just a few blocks from the ferry in Cruz Bay. The grounds are well maintained and while there is not much of a beach the snorkeling is excellent and the sunsets are spectacular.

Room Tip: While the condos facing Cruz Bay have an interesting view be aware the beach bars play loud music un...
