We recently got back from our 2 week stay at the Westin. They are working very hard to clean up the grounds to make them look the way they used to. Security has improved greatly from getting on the ferry to the Hotel itself. Getting on the ferry on STT is in a much better location. If you have to wait, there is shopping and bars close by. The staff at the Hotel is still very friendly. Especially at Snorkel's Bar, (HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST BARS IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS). Down side at the bar is the drinks got smaller and the price went up. That seems to be happening through out the Islands though. Can you say ECONOMY. Great place to go first thing in the morning for coffee and whatever is the Mango Deli. Same friendly service. Had the pleasure of meeting with the Director of Rooms. He actually took notes on everything I had to say both good and not so good. Plus got back to me with some answers before we left. All and all this was a very good stay. Looking forward to going back next year.

We decided to use our Westin Timeshare at the Westin St. John. To get a room during the the month of January (peak season), we made our reservation the day they were allowed ( 8 months prior). We reserved a (3) bedroom villa and were fortunate to secure a private pool villa. We eventually checked into Villa 4313 which was a totally renovated unit after leaving Villa 4415 due to air conditioning problems. Our party of six thoroughly enjoyed the island of St. John and agreed we would return. The island was like a giant resort with great beaches whereever you went.

The Westin St. John is in a beautiful location. Arriving on the Westin Ferry after a long airplane ride from Kansas City, the property looked picture prefect. We were glad we paid the $110 private ferry fee since it was our first trip to St. John and worth the expense.

The following are a list of pros and cons about the resort.

- The grounds were picture perfect. There was always someone working to keep it looking wonderful.
- Our three bedroom villa has just been remodeled and was beautiful. There were a few changes we would make but overall were very impressed with our accommodations.
- The gym is first rate. It is much better than most any hotel or resort gym. We very much enjoyed our 8:00am yoga classes.
- The tennis courts were very busy every morning however looked older and needed to be resurfaced.
- The hotel pool is a focal point of the resort. It is wonderful.
- The beach front chairs and bay were good but could use improvement. We recommend having better beach side service and cabanas.
- We rented a cabana for a complete day as a birthday surprise. We payed $120 which included a private spot for our party to enjoy. Cabana set-up service was non-existance but our drink server was great - Tamika. We do not recommend renting the cabana for the price. Having the cabana on the beach would make the experience so much better.
- The conceirge service was very good. We loved Lollie and all her recommendations.
- Walking to and from the main resort area from our timeshare was not very safe. We recommend the resort adding a special walkway only for guests.
- The majority of the help on the entire island was just plain lazy. They had a defensive attitude and were unengaged. Unfortunately this problem existed at the Westin too. We recommend the Westin recruit staff from the mainland. Island help has just not learned our US way for customer service.
- The taxi cab system on the island is a racket. Our party of (6) paid an average of $40 - $50 for each trip. Most guests figure out this scam after a few days. The car rentals are a better option. Don't use the on-site car rental if possible. They have customer service issues.

We made it a point to review the other (2) primary resorts on the island - Caneel Bay & Gallows Point. Caneel Bay is the hands down best resort.. However, it costs around $1,000 a night to stay at Caneel Bay Inn making the Westin St. John a better option if cost is a consideration.

We do recommend staying at the Westin St. John. We own at the Princeville Resort in Hawaii and were glad we were able to experience St. John using our Star Options at no additional cost. It was definately worth the trade.

If you get a chance to look at the Westin St. John's new phase of villas, take it. They are wonderful. If you're an owner they will give you a $150 in Westin dollars.

It's hard to diffeerentiate between the Westin and its amazing location. St. John is such a wonderful place for a romantic getaway . High lights - the staff was almost entirely friendly and helpful. the rooms were spacious - beds very comfortable, outdoor breakfasts most satisfying. Loved the ferry and being greeted upon arrival with a rum punch. complaints - towels were a bit threadbare for a 5 star resort, rooms could use a bit of pizzazz, Biggest downer was the pressure from the concierge to attend a sales meeting for their timeshares. It was a waste of their time and ours and left a bitter taste. It also would have been nice to have had the island transportation system explained in writing either ahead of time, or upon arrival as it really is unique. On the whole though we lvoed our stay.

My husband and I just returned from a lovely stay at Westin St. John. I had read a very positive review on TripAdvisor about www.stjohncondos.com which leases villas for owners of the West St. John villas. I'd never tried this before but took the bait and was glad we did. For the price of a room at the Westin, we secured instead a gorgeous villa at the Westin, overlooking the bay (best sunset view on the island), full kitchen, granite countertops, all "Heavenly Beds" by Westin, superb decore. Essentially you are a guest of the Westin St. John, which operates as a hotel, and a time share facility but you make arrangments through stjohncondos.com which leases villas on behalf of time share owners.

The folks at stjohncondos could not have been more helpful -- Steve Bass is a retired college professor who moved with wife Kevyn to St. John after enjoying numerous family vacations on the island. He is very methodical in all his communications so we knew we were in good hands, no surprises. Kevyn met us when we arrived late, around 8pm, and had picked up a few breakfast groceries we'd asked for. What a treat! I highly recommend contacting them to make arrangments if you are considering staying at West St. John.

We were there for a medical conference. The hotel conference facilities were similarly beautiful, not the usual stark ballroom, but cozier and well appointed. The staff is consistently helpful at every turn. They operate golf carts up and down the hill for guests to get from bay to villas to pool, etc (it is spread out a bit to fit into the island setting), and we were always picked up when we needed to be by a friendly staffer.

Our only warning is be prepared for high price of food on the island. Our favorite spot after trying several restaurants was the Westin's own restaurant, right on the beach. Soooo relaxing, quiet, good food, excellent house wine. It's 20. rount trip by taxi to get into town each night for dinner, so instead we stayed "home" and enjoyed the Westin.

My husband and I goth got SCUBA certified while on St. John. For that we highly recommend Low Key Watersports which has been voted best dive shop in the Virgin Islands for 5 years in a row. For good reason! They know their business. I was a little out of my comfort zone in doing this, but Ann Marie Estes (one of the owners) took time to meet with me, get me hooked up with a good instructor, and got me through it! What a joy to swim with a sea turtle (thanks to Dive Master Jeremy King) and see the underwater world. Thanks everyone for a great stay in St. John!

We had a wonderful stay. We were there for 4 days but loved it so much we were able to change our flights and add on another day. Would have stayed longer if we could have. The staff were overly helpful with recommendations on dinner. A little pricey for the average hotel, but that's expected anywhere in the USVI. The only drawback was that they seem to force you to leave even earlier than expected on a ferry to allow plenty of time at the airport. We got there about 2 hours before our flight left and still were through security in only 10 minutes. The rooms are decent, a little outdated, but I'm sure its tough to constantly upgrade the place when everything has to be brought onto the island. Everyone around the resort was overly friendly. Whether we were renting a boat, going for a snorkel trip or just lounging around the welcoming atmosphere ranked right up there with any other Caribbean vacation we've had. The pool was great too. Huge and always plenty of room to just hang out. I wouldn't recommend the hotel restaurant though. Way too pricey and not much of a selection or atmosphere. A short and cheap taxi ride downtown gives you a ton of much better options. We would definitely recommend it and can't wait to go back.

We just came back from 5 nights at the Westin Cruz Bay. I paid with Starwood points plus cash which was very reasonable. The standard rate of over $500 per nite was way beyond what we would consider.

I read a few bad reviews on this web site so I hope to answer some of the complaints with this review.

First of all we decided to pay the $110 per person for the Westin ferry because it is much easier, after a long flight, for some one to take your bags and drop them at your room. The Westin lounge at the airport was setup very efficiently and you checked in at the airport and leave all your bags with the Westin staff. We were a bit dissapointed that the welcome drink was water (at that point we were looking forward to heavier spirits) and the we were not looking forward to waiting 2 hours for the 5:45pm ferry. The reality was that the staff immediately puts you on a prepaid shuttle to the yacht club where the Westin ferry docks. At the yacht club there are very good (and reasonable priced) restaurants where we had an excellent late lunch. By the time you eat, drink and do some window shopping (expensive stores), its time to board the ferry for the 45 minute ride to the Westin.

I investigated the do-it-yourself ferry and was not pleased about the 45 minute cab ride over narrow roads to the Red Hook ferry followed by a short 20 minute ferry ride to Cruz Bay (the town, not the Westin dock), followed by another 15 minute cab ride from Cruz Bay to the Westin Hotel. Add in the extra charge per piece of luggage for each leg of the journey (cab to Red Hook and ferry to Cruz Bay), and it seemed more trouble than it was worth. There is a ferry from the St John commercial dock, but the cab ride to the dock, the shortened St Thomas ferry schedule, and the baggage charges did not make this an attractive option.

Once you arrive at the Westin you are escorted to your room. If it is a distant corner of the large resort, they transport you in a cart. The bags showed up about 45 minutes later.

We had a garden view which was a spacious, ground floor room with a patio and a partial ocean view. The room and bathroom were very clean and all the towels and linen were soft and had a very fresh smell. Excellent water pressure and abundant hot water. The maid service was very good except for sometimes no hand towels replaced by extra bath towels.

The distances at the resort are a bit hard on your feet, but not excessive. It probably took 5 minutes to walk to the beach (excellent beach, abundant towels and chairs), and about 15 minutes to walk to the parking lot. There is a lot of "up-hill" that would make it difficult for anyone out of shape, but there were plenty of carts that you could flag down for a lift. The staff was very accomodating in making a U-turn to take you where you wanted to go.

My comment on the staff is that unless you are acquainted with the "Island Time" mentality, you would find things slow and not too efficient. There were some annoying things such as the crib in the wrong room, but on the whole folks, this is not New York City. The staff try hard, but sometimes it comes out strange to us city folk.

We only had breakfast at the Westin and the buffet was $24 which far less than we pay at big city hotels. The choices were as good as anything we've had anywhere including an oumlet station and, because the prices of everything in St John are very high, the Westin breakfast was a bargain.

The fantastic beaches (Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay) are only about 20 minutes from the hotel. Thats pretty good considering the speed limit is 10-20 mph and you drive on the left side on the very very narrow hilly roads. The hotel beach doesn't compare to the natural beaches, but the water is very warm and calm, the sand is super soft, and the beach is well maintained.. In addition, floats, chairs, and umbrellas are included in the resort fee. There is also a bar by the pool (watch for the $5 specials at 5pm).

The Westin pool is large and well maintained. If they have towels at the pool, they give you as many as you like. If they are short of towels, think of "Island Time" and suck it up. There is also a hot tub/whirlpool behind the spa by the pool.

Internet in the room was only 35Mbps which is a little slow, but still good enough for a reasonable SKYPE webcam call.

There is a problem with insect bites whether on the resort or eating at an open air restaurant in Cruz Bay. Even with the 100% DEET spray we still got many bites. It spite of that, we are already planning our next trip back.

We stayed in the "newly renovated" buildings (about 5 years ago). The units were modern, bright, very functional, clean and adequately spacious. Our unit was all on one floor and was actually twovery large hotel rooms that were joined when the renovation was done. It was 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The previous week we stayed at the Marriot on St Thomas in the HOTEL and not the timeshares. The Marriott sucked (please read the reviews as I am not the only one to say this). We had the chance to look at the older units and thought that we were glad to stay where we were. The older units required walking up fairly shabby and spotted carpeted stairs to a loft bedroom where as ours had ceramic tile which is cleaner over time. To me, there is nothing worse than smelly old carpet with ware and spots. Other units were darker and less well laid out than ours. Since it is a rather large property, the resort provides golf carts and friendly drivers to "cart" you to almost anywhere that you want to go on the resort. We toured the 3 bedroom villas farthest from the beach and would NEVER stay in one of these. They are worn out and have their own worn out tiny pool and large outdoor spa which all looked semi-functional.

One of the the nicest thingabout the place was its close proximity to a grocery store about a block away. We were able to save quite a bit of money by eating in although the prices were shocking for Midwesterners. However, occassionally, we felt that a splurge was justified and treated ourselves to a nice restaurant.

The beach is sort of okay and seemed to double as a marina. The pool was very nice, clean. and neither was so very crowed as we have experienced in other places where the guest must arise at dawn to claim a beach chair.

The fitness center which we used daily, was spacious, fairly clean, well maintained and had more equipment than our award winning YMCA back home. It was a joy to use! Best yet it was never to crowed to get on a tradmill, cross trainer, bikes, moon walker ans tones of weight machines.

The hotel staff was unusually friendly and efficient for this area of the Carribbean. We were very pleased with the quick response time when we needed something. The taxi drivers to and from the resort were more like the usual sort of lazy types that I have encountered in the Caribbean before. They are the type to look for a tip rather than look to provide any service.
