“Not quite paradise”

We brought our family (nine of us) to St John to celebrate a major anniversary. While the island itself is paradise, this 40 + year old house is in need of some serious upgrades and improvements. On the positive side: the view is awesome, there was a good book and music library, the pool is nice, and the kids appreciated the direct access to the water, although the "beach" is small and rocky and requires shoes to reach the water. The house is not air conditioned, and while there is typically a breeze during the day, that is often not the case at night. The overhead fans helped, but not enough. Also leaving the house open to catch the breeze meant wild life invasion of birds, iguanas and bugs. Several things need to be repaired or replaced such as the deck cushions (torn), the grill (igniter doesn't work), the shower heads which struggle to spray, and several appliances. We could not get the TV to work, but then again were not there to watch TV. Conservation of water is required, so be prepared not to flush toilets, to take mini showers, and not wash clothes. I was also surprised to find out once we arrived that the house was on the market, and we might need to let people see it who were interested! Really??! For what we paid, I expected better. A disappointment.

“Needs Upgrading”

This is out second visit to St John and we had a fabulous vacation. We spent most the time at the beaches or on a boat. The view from the house over Chocolate Hole is stunning and the proximity to the town is great, with supermarkets, bars, restaurants all close by. The house was also well equipped with everything we needed for the week. It is a short stroll down to the shore but it is very rocky there with lost of stinging urchins so not suitable for swimming in. The paths to/from the pool (nice and safe - not that big though) are concrete with sharp stones set in them so not suitable from walking in bare feet. The villa itself 1 major short coming however.

The villa is quite old and does not have AC, this requires the doors to be left open. This by itself is not an issue as the breeze keeps the house reasonably cool, however the open doors leave in all of the local wildlife. Numerous times we had birds, iguanas in the kitchen foraging for food/crumbs. The worst however were the mosquitoes, the photos of the house do not show that the house is situated above a large pool of brown (stagnant?) water in Chocolate Hole, all of my family received multiple mosquito bites despite liberal use of Deet spray. This is the primary reason for the 2 stars.

Destination St John were good to deal with and our experience with booking and getting the keys etc... was fine.

We stayed at Seagate for a week.
It is a lovely home. Would highly recommend it to others.
Beautiful views from the living room. The whole front of the house/living room is a large set of sliding glass doors. Allowing for a great view. You can open the doors and there is always a good breeze. It's a huge open living /dining space.
The kitchen is large, well stocked with all dishes, utensils you need. Bathrooms well stocked with towels, soap. Bring your own shampoo.
Lots of bedrooms, all nicely furnished, each with its own bathroom.
All the conveniences of internet access, and cable tv.
Large beach towels are there for your use. As well as beach chairs.
It's great having a pool for relaxing fun right at the villa.
The beach below is coral, pebble beach. Not easy swimming or snorkeling if the wind is blowing in strong.
Nice surrounding area to talk a walk - see more great views.
Location at Chocolate Hole is very good. Close to Cruz Bay - 5 minute drive. Grocery market close by on the road into Cruz Bay.
We were greeted at the ferry dock, taken to our jeep rental, and escorted to the villa. Very friendly, helpful service.
