“Charming and Comfortable”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2012

I have traveled all over the world and this is the best B&B I have ever stayed in. The room was charming, very well appointed, with a comfy bed and a secluded atmosphere. It had a private deck amongst the trees! The basket of essentials, like sunscreen and bandaids, was extremely thoughtful as was the mini-fridge stocked with water and soda. They even remembered the salsa and chips for my first night! The breakfasts were wonderful-fresh fruit and yummy muffins- and Hank and Karen were extremely attentive, going out of their way to assure an excellent experience on St. John. It has to be the very best value on St. John as well. You can keep Caneel Bay and the Western...I'd stay at Tree Tops every time!

Room Tip: Both rooms are perfect but the Captain's Quarters would also suit a family as it has a futon for...

First of all I need to apologize for taking so long to post this review. I was on St John last summer for a friends wedding and stayed at the Tree Tops. In a word - Amazing!

Everything others have written about the awesome accommodations to the breakfasts to the extra touches provided are so true... I just want to reinforce that the only thing better than the the location - which is unbelievable, actually staying in a rainforest with incredible natural beauty right outside the door/window, nestled in the mountainside was the the hospitality of Karen and Hank. I cannot express how knowledgeable, accommodating and generous they were and how much that added to the whole experience. I genuinely miss the breakfasts prepared by Karen - food and conversation included. [Btw turns out we are all from Massachusetts (enjoyed watching that Red Sox-Yankees game Hank) but I really think they're like that to everyone!]

I recommend this place to anyone who wants the perfect getaway experience and in a location that they'll never forget. We will come back and there is nowhere else on the island I could even fathom staying having experienced the Tree Tops.

P.S. We had the Captains Quarters and I have to say that being able to take a shower outside during a tropical rainstorm at night rates as one of the most incredible experiences of the whole trip...

My lady-friend and I had an absolute pleasure staying in the “Captain's Quarters“ room at Treetops in mid-December 2011. Not to mention we enjoyed and appreciated the fine hospitality and sincere instant friendship with hostess-Karen and host-Hank. Our 5 day stay on wonderful St John (I have been visiting for over 30 years) was the highlight of our multi-island trip and surpassed the B&B we stayed at on St Thomas and the boutique hotel we stayed at on Tortola.

St John is not for those on a tight budget since you really need to rent a car to see the island thoroughly (very limited bus service and too spread-out to use taxis much). Lots of gorgeous beach parks (Caneel Bay, Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, etc., snorkeling and hiking plus very scenic and excellent condition roadways to explore (even though narrow in parts!). So since you have to pay a premium of $70/$75 /day for a small 4wd (highly advisable), it was a balance to get such a great value at Treetops. Plus you need a car in order to stay at Treetops since it is about a 15 minute drive from the only real downtown (Cruz Bay)(and where the ferries arrive/depart and where the car rental locations are)

Treetops is tucked back in an upscale but natural, lush and uncrowded neighborhood. Not in the boonies but your own special accommodation nestled in the surrounding “jungle” without other houses in view, no fences, and only a beautiful open piece on nature. As with most of St. John aside from the beaches it is very rugged, hilly, and “mountainous” country. So much better then staying in busy and relatively crowded Cruz Bay and much more intimate and memorable then a large resort such as the Westin - not to mention 1/3 or less-the expense.

Hank and Karen provide everything you need for a comfortable stay and for your beach outings. They are attentive to any special needs or impromptu requests, serve a cozy and relaxed breakfast with easy-conversation if you want, but at the same time give you plenty of privacy and they respect time to yourselves. They are busy enjoying themselves and doing things on the island as well!

We loved the totally private outdoor shower, the peace and quiet, the cozy island/mariner décor and the functional design and supplies that are included. The birds they feed on their deck sing delightfully every morning and a big buck deer came to nibble below our large backyard window view on several mornings.

We enjoyed the perfect balance of sleeping in a bit, enjoying the choices of fresh coffee, home-made bakery items, and fresh fruit every morning, then jumping in our jeep and touring to different parts of the island each day. Stopping at scenic and beachfront or mountaintop bars and restaurants along the way. Finding great snorkeling and sunbathing spots. Sometimes we would grab basic groceries and rum/mixers to enjoy in the afternoons back at Treetops. Around sunset we usually took the short and fun drive back into Cruz Bay to hit the microbrewery or a happy hour rum spot and then grabbed a bite to eat. Back “home” to unwind, read, chat, and then crash! No TV or telephone thank goodness! There is an internet and inexpensive phone place/mail/postal place in Cruz Bay.

I have visited dozens of islands all over the world over past decades and have stayed at numerous B& B’s etc. etc. and Treetops is very, very high on my list! My lady-friend and I cannot wait to return and enjoy Treetops and Hank and Karen’s company ASAP!

Room Tip: I believe 2 rooms open these days-not the smallest "bunk room". Captains Quarter's is...

We stayed Jan 28 to Feb 4, 2012.
Hank and Karen run a great B&B. They are warm, funny and full of good information about St. John. While it is a ways outside of Cruz Bay, we found that to be a plus. The roads all over St. John are steep and winding (think carnival thrill ride), but unless you're willing to only go where the taxis go, you will have to experience them. We liked being where it was quiet and peaceful. The room (Captain's Quarters) was good sized and spotlessly clean. The outdoor shower provided a unique experience. The small fridge, microwave and Hank's grill allowed us to cook many of our own dinners and pack lunches for the beach. This saved us a lot of money. It also meant that we had several relaxing evenings to rest up for another amazing day of snorkeling and hiking. Karen and Hank go above and beyond in providing excellent service, i.e. lending us a cooler, providing beach chairs, a couple of beers, waters and soft drinks in the fridge when we arrived, sunscreen and bug spray, and many other touches that added to a great week.
We loved staying here. We have never repeated any of our vacations, but after day two we decided to return next January. Both Treetops and St. John are experiences that need to be repeated again and again.

Room Tip: We liked Starfish Market for our groceries. Don't hesitate to call or email Karen with questions...

I stayed at Treetops for 9 nights and had one of the best vacations ever. Hank and Karen are wonderful, and staying at Treetops gives you an insiders view of the island. Not only are the accomadations as good as any hotel, Treetops is relatively inexpensive for St. John. I would 100% recommend staying there to anyone.

My husband and I stayed in the First Mate's Head Quarters for 8 nights and it was wonderful! Tree Tops is lovely. Hank and Karen are wonderful hosts with breakfast every morning and always had helpful tips about the island. Our room was super clean, the bed was comfortable, and all of the rooms are very private.

The extra perk that you get at Tree Tops is to be able to enjoy the sound of the tree frogs at night while chillin' on the nice balcony in the evenings!

We enjoyed staying away from the busy-ness of Cruz Bay and the resorts in a home-type atmosphere. The trip into town is really quick. You'll need a rental car, but in my opinion, in order to really experience the island a rental car is necessary anyway.

Treetops is a top-notch bed and breadfast and is an excellent value!

Room Tip: We enjoyed the balcony and the openess of First Mate's Head Quarters.

If you are looking for a relaxing, private and very picturesque spot to stay on the beautiful island of St. John, you need look no further than Treetops. In the evening you relax to the sounds of tree frogs and are awaken each morning with the chirping of birds. Hosts Karen and Hank are very welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. They know all the great places to shop and eat as well as the best beaches to visit and the hikes and excursions to take. Karen leaves a welcoming snack for all guests and prepares a delicious breakfast daily. The Captain's Quarter, where we stayed for 7 days, has a living room with small kitchenette, bath and bedroom. The rooms are nicely decorated with a nautical theme are perfectly clean and very comfortable. Having the shower on the outside is useful when you arrive home covered in the fine sand of the beautiful beaches of St. John. For those who prefer to cook their own meals after a day at the beach or hiking, there is a grill available. The local supermarket has a variety of meat, fish and fresh vegetables that are delicious and require very little effort to prepare on the grill. If you want to get a real flavor of the island, then Treetops is a great place to stay. However, if you prefer to lie on the beach and have your drinks brought to you, then this would not be your best choice. We totally enjoyed our stay at Treetops and would recommend this B & B very highly for its charm, affordability, and location which gives much more privacy than in the middle of a "resort area."

Room Tip: If you want more space, choose the Captain's Quarter which had a living room with a small kitch...
