The "Christmas" trade winds were strong (20-30 mph) on the open water chop and swells made for a rough ride, but once we got to the fishing spots- the fish were there! Catching them was a chore at a couple spots, but once hooked on it was a thrill! Capt Arthur Jones did well telling us what to look for. My wife and I caught maybe a dozen and landed 5 or six "baby" tarpon (30lbs +/-). Trolled for a couple 'cudas. My arms were tired! Would like to do it on a calm day! Maybe then we can fish the flats...

Arawak Expeditions took us on a full day Kayak Snorkle trip to Hurricane Hole on the east end of St. John. Liz was our guide for the day, and she was just great.

The trip starts at their shop in the BEAUTIFUL Mongoose Junction shopping center, a short 2 minute walk from the ferry dock downtown. After a gear check, we loaded up into the truck and hitched up a trailier loaded with brand new (sit on top style) kayaks, and off we went.

The trip over the island to Hurricane Hole is about 30 minutes, but is very nice. Liz provided an engaging running commentary, and took the time to get to know a bit about us. Once we arrived at the stunningly gorgeous bay, we pulled the boats off the trailer and were on the water in about 15 minutes.

After a paddle around the first creek of mangroves, we paddled across to a beach for our first snorkle stop. The mangroves are breathtakingly beautiful under water. Liz described the place as "magical", and I really can't think of a better word to use. It was just amazing.

After a paddle to a second spot, we had a plentiful lunch from a local deli. Hand made hummus, macaroni and chicken salads, fresh greens, and pre-made sandwiches. There was plenty of time to hang out on the stone beach, or do a bit more snorkling. (there was a bit more silt at this spot, making the previous stop under the mangroves the decided highlight of the trip)

There was quite a bit less time spent paddling than I had expected. More time was spent snorkling the mangroves....an awesome tradeoff in my book. We never felt rushed, and never felt uncomfortable. This was simply a GREAT tour. 5 green dots, guys!

Afterthought: Something that really stands out for me, was the way in which Liz made every person on the tour feel like she'd known them for years. It can be difficult to remember people's names, especially when serve different a different group every day, and Liz made it look effortless. It's obvious that she loves her job, and it is reflected in the quality of tour she guides. We honestly felt like we were part of a group of friends going out kayaking for the day, rather than just "customers" to be shuttled to a place and back again. Thank you, Liz.

We had an excellent time on our kayak tour of Hurricane Hole. Jenna was our guide and she did a fantastic job. There were 4 in our group; we drove ourselves as we were going to Coral Bay after the tour for dinner. The trip was relaxing as we weren’t rushed to keep any schedule. Jenna pointed out a lot of things while we snorkeled and explained about the area. Saw a puffer fisher in the mangroves, cool. We stopped for lunch on a beach, very rustic. The sun was very intense and there was no shade. It wasn’t really a problem as we had sunblock (Jenna shared her 50spf). The lunch provided was great. The whole grain bread was the best. We went back to the deli to get a loaf for dinner. It was a fun day of kayaking and snorkeling. Jenna was very capable and made it an enjoyable day. Well worth it.

We took a full-day kayak/snorkel trip in Hurricane Hole and saw the mangroves which are a national monument. Our guide was Liz and she was phenomenal, I cannot say enough about how flexible and informative she was. Seeing as this was our first kayak trip she answered all our questions and assured us a great day. The trip was just us and one other couple. The paddles were relatively short and the snorkeling was amazing. We have snorkeled many reefs but never in the mangroves. The fish were amazing, starfish plentiful and even saw some moon jellies.

Lunch was packed and prepared for us from Deli Grotto. Yum! Liz even fended off the hermit crabs from our lunch. We had more than enough to eat. We had the opportunity to drive our own vehicle out to the East End so that we could explore Coral Bay and the East End at the end of the day. I would recommend this company to anyone who wants a GREAT experience with friendly staff!

While in St. John we had some rainy weather and were looking for activities we could do besides hitting the beach. We took the eco kayak tour through Arawak Expeditions. Jenna was our guide and was very knowledgeable and alot of fun. She let us decide where we wanted to go after providing us some options.

The snorkel part of the trip was pretty cool, we managed to find a nice small island that had a small beach. All in all, a great experience and a fun activity.

We plan on doing it again when we return.
