We recently returned from a great day sail adventure with Capt Phil and Tarn on the Wayward Sailor. We opted for the all day BVI excursion to Jost Van Dyke. Capt Phil met us near the ferry wharf in Cruz Bay on time at 8am and we quickly tendered out to the Wayward Sailor which he keeps moored in the harbor.

Phil immediately gave us a safety briefing on the boat including locations of life jackets and other equipment as soon as we were on board. The Wayward Sailor was Phil's home for over 20 years and she has been lovingly maintained. As a sailor myself, I appreciate the effort it takes to keep a boat in tip top condition. She is sturdy, comfortable and safe.

We set out for snorkel stop before heading to Jost where Phil and I got in the water. We saw a very rare black and white reef shark and some very interesting coral formations. Then we sailed across the channel to Jost where we cleared customs at the shack next to Foxy's. Normally Phil likes to have lunch at Foxy's but as it was the off season, we motored over to White Bay (10 mins away) and anchored for lunch at the famous Soggy Dollar Bar. We bought Painkillers and tee shirts and I successfully hooked the ring (go there are you'll see what I mean).

We had time for a quick swim after lunch and then we sailed back across to St John. Captain Phil is an interesting character with hundreds of stories--one or two of which might be true (he is a sailor afterall...). Tarn is warm, friendly and inviting and together they make a fine team.

One thing to note: Phil likes thing done his way, particularly on the boat and in the water. If you are very independent or not prone to following directions, this may not be the charter boat for you.

That having been said, we had a nice day with Phil and Tarn and we highly recommend then to anyone looking for a nice sail from St John.

I booked a half day sail/snorkel that included my wife and 3 daughters. None of my kids have sailed before so I went for the half day. After removing our shoes at the dockside, we loaded into Capt Phil's "unsinkable" dingy, where he told us some interesting sea creature facts, in only a way that Capt Phil can tell, and then shuttled us out to his sloop, Wayward Sailor, where we were met by first mate, Tarn.

We had a beautiful gentle sail to a nearby island inhabited only by Capt Phil and 2 other residences. We moored off the island a ways and Capt Phil fitted us individually with our snorkel gear with great care. Because he had injured his finger recently and was unable to go into the water, Tarn gave us a tour of the reef pointing out all kinds of beautiful sea life including bringing up to the surface a sea cucmber for all to touch. I saw some of the most beautiful and colorful fish here along with a stingray.

After a nice snorkel we headed back to the ship for a much appreciated snack of tortilla chips and salsa. There also free soda, water or beer.

The sail back was relaxing and Capt Phil and Tarn did everything possible to accommodate us, and they are very safety conscious.

If you're looking for a great way to experience the beautiful St John waters, book a trip with Capt Phil on the Wayward Sailor!

Our Sail/Snorkeling day trip on the Wayward Sailor was one of the highlights of our St. John vacation! Captain Phil and his first mate Tarn, were very knowledgeable, and thoroughly answered all of our questions. They also shared many interesting facts about the islands and the marine life.
They were great at getting us prepped to go into the water. Captain Phil and Tarn spent time explaining and demonstration proper use of the snorkel gear. They also took the time to make sure we were comfortable and our equipment fit perfectly before we left the boat. Regardless of having very little snorkeling experience, by the time I went in I felt completely relaxed. We went to two different spots during our day sail, where we saw amazing colorful coral, and beautiful fish. I highly recommend taking a sail on the Wayward Sailor.
Thanks again, Captain Phil and Tarn!

captn Phil and first mate Tarn gave us a great day of sailing and cool snorkeling. Weather was crazy all weak but he was able to sail around the clouds and pick snorkel spots that we had not visited in past several trips. Great stories from his years of sailing.

Capt Phil performed our wedding ceremony and helped to make it exactly what we hoped it would be. A few days into our honeymoon we went on an all day sail with Capt Phil. It was awesome! He is such a nice guy, so knowledgable, and the boat was a great size for a personal experience. The first thing we will schedule on our next trip to St. John is a sail with Capt Phil!
