“Good.. but not as good as our first stay at Chateau La Tete Rouge”

First trip with our family several years ago was excellent. However, the property had some maintenance issues on our last visit. The bathroom faucet off the kitchen had to be disconnected due to a leakage and it never got fixed during our stay. The freezer drawer was not working properly and took a man to open it. The fire alarm in the master suite went off during two nights. Called maintenance and they said they would take care of it and would let me know when it was fixed. No one ever called, so I personally took the alarm down to make sure we would get a good night's sleep. I have recommended Chateau La Tete Rouge to several people in the past but would not now unless I was assured that all issues have been corrected.

“Off the hook”

The short story: Off the hook! The property was well maintained, better than expected, and the views were incredible. I still think about the view off the patio – it’s now my “happy place” I go to when stressed.
For those who like detail: We (three couples) booked Chateau de la Tete Rouge from Villas of Distinction. Ciejae from Villas was helpful and responsive. We hit her with about nine thousand questions, all of which she graciously answered and even had a last minute car rental change which she orchestrated (thank you Ciejae). On our way into St. John, someone from the property management company met us, took us to the rental car agency, then guided us to Chateau de la Tete Rouge. It took less than ten minutes to get from Cruz Bay to the Chateau. Be advised, the driving is very hilly but you get used to it quickly. Once we arrived, the first thing we noticed was the driveway. It’s a pretty steep incline (but not a problem). We would later park one car at the top of the hill and the other at the bottom by the house. It wasn’t entirely necessary, but it usually took one person helping the other two cars get out. Of course, the instant we saw the Chateau, the driveway angle vaporized as we took in the most incredible view. This house is probably one of the best places I have every stayed in the Caribbean. The view from the patio was off the hook. My morning routine was grabbing a cup of coffee, sitting in their comfee chairs on the patio, and staring at the beautiful bay below or thirty miles of ocean horizon. On a clear day, we could see St. Croix. Our guide gave us a thorough overview of the house and that was the last time we saw her (she did take us to the Starfish market as well – wish I could remember her name because she did a great job, please tip her). We didn’t need to talk to the management company during the entire trip. Everything in the house was in excellent working order. There were so many little things the owners of the house added, it’s hard to describe. Even their drinking mugs were huge and cool. As advertised, the house had two king beds and one queen. Each room had its own well-stocked bathroom. There was also a loft which we didn’t use. The rooms were very quiet but the loft was right above the kitchen (it’s upstairs but isn’t enclosed – it’s a loft). Just be advised that anyone staying the loft will hear living room and kitchen noise. The pool was in excellent shape and we used the hot tub regularly. Everything said “excellence.” It made me think the owners took a bit of special care with the house. Even the deck where the Pool and hot tub are located had a cool design. A couple comments and tips: Since the living room opens directly to the outside, other posts spoke of mosquitos so we over armed ourselves with repellant. Mosquitos weren’t a problem at the house at all, probably because of the light breeze, but we did find some of them in Cruz Bay. The room ACs were super cool. My wife was actually cold one night so I had to turn our room AC up (we like it in the arctic). There is an AC unit in the living room but I will say this about St. John weather – it is amazing. I don’t know if it is always like what we experienced in May but it was never too hot or too cool. Okay, when the sun comes out from behind some clouds while on the beach, it can get hot, but besides that, the weather was perfect. The temp in the house was right there with it, perfect. They have three coolers (one with wheels), beach towels, beach chairs (three have backpack straps for easy carrying) and snorkel gear for the beaches. If you want a travel jug for rum punch, you will want to bring your own or recycle a jug from something you buy at the grocery store. There is even a pair of binoculars and a spotting scope for ocean scanning on the patio. Watch the birds. There is a one legged bird who makes you feel a bit sorry for him. If you feed him, he and his buddy will fly into the house when you are not looking and help themselves to anything laying around. Not a problem – actually it was kind of a fun watching him try (and failing) to build a nest. There are also very large iguanas in the trees that are interesting to watch. Overall, Chateau de la Tete Rouge blew us away. When I first saw the pictures of the Chateau I was sure someone did some Photoshop work. When I saw the house in person, it was even better than the photos. That’s exactly what I want in a vacation home (better than the pictures). I would definitely stay here again the next time in St. John.

“Wonderful week on St. John”
Reviewed April 12, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We had rented a different villa on St. John in 2014 so this house had a lot to live up too. The location on Rendezvous Bay and the views are AMAZING. It’s not a huge house but it was very spacious for 8 people. We never felt we were on top of each other. The kitchen is loaded with everything you would use at home (pots, pans, cutting boards, dishes, utensils). We cooked most nights and never had an issue. They also supply bathroom necessities (i.e. paper, soap, shampoo, lotion). Cleaning person came during the week to change sheets which was a nice touch.

The outside area of the house is the most amazing part! The deck, pool, hot tub and yoga area were enjoyed by all. We chose to close the shutters of the house each night at sundown as we felt it became a little buggy in the loft area where my two kids were sleeping. I believe the house lights were attracting them but when we sat outside at night we didn’t have much of a bug problem.

The creatures that live in and around the property were very interesting! There is a family of frogs that live in the roof rafters over the outdoor seating area by the pool and it was fun to watch and listen to them each night. There are also several large iguana’s that come onto the deck each morning to drink the rain water and one even jumped into the pool for a swim while 2 family members were floating in it. You can imagine their surprise! I only wish I had been there to see that!!

If I had to say one negative about the property I think it would be the lack of upkeep. This villa has some issues that need fixing: frost filled freezer, which would barely open, bathroom cold water knob that didn't work until my husband tweaked it, master bathroom toilet with flushing issues, one of the downstairs bathrooms was constantly flooded as the shower curtain is not long enough, dishwasher buttons didn't light up so you never knew what cycle it was on (sometimes it cleaned and sometimes it didn’t), broken patio umbrella, and broken beach chair.

It's my belief that if you’re paying over $7,000 a week for a "luxury" villa, you should not have to call the management company every day with issues (which we didn’t bother to do) and you shouldn’t have to hand wash dishes! They should be aware of these things and they should be on top of them.

Of course we had a wonderful week at Chateau La Tete Rouge and we absolutely love the island. Right now I would be hesitant to recommend the property to a friend (although I said yes to that part of the review, there was no maybe) and we would not pay that kind of money again without the reassurance that this house was back in tip top shape.

“Spectacular views!”

This house has some of the most amazing views we have ever seen. The pictures do not lie, AMAZING! My husband and our two grown children spent a week taking in the spectacular views. The house is very comfortable, A/C throughout, but in the main part of the house, do yourself a favor and keep the shutters open for a true indoor/outdoor experience. It would be a shame to close them during the day and with the breezes, it really isn't necessary. There are three very nice bedrooms and two twin beds in the loft area, plenty of room. The house is very clean and well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc. Lots of comfy furniture inside an out, a spot for everyone. My favorite was on the patio is the cushy chair reading a book. Paradise! The pool area is lovely, we always went for a refreshing dip after a day out. Relaxing in the hot tub capped off the evenings. The house is large enough for three couples, each afforded privacy and private baths. The actual footprint of the house is not huge but the layout and beautiful wood, vaulted ceilings make if feel open and spacious. I have no real cons as I feel that is too harsh a word, but some minor tweaks would really make push this house over the top. The bathrooms are starting to show a bit of age and wear as is the kitchen sink. Definitely not huge issues, but in a property this beautiful, it would be nice if all rooms reflected the intended feeling of luxury. The property is fairly private, you can only see the neighbors behind through the trees now and then. During the day when everyone is out an about, you can hear people from neighboring house, not loud or annoying at all, it really doesn't take away from the privacy of the property. Overall, a beautiful property on a beautiful island!

Chateau La Tete Rouge was the perfect vacation spot. The house was immaculate and had everything you could possibly need from kitchen gadgets to pool towels. My husband and I traveled with our two grown children and their partners and the house was big enough to provide us all with privacy. The pool was beautiful, the view was spectacular and the location was perfect. I loved opening the motorized blinds every morning and sitting on the patio overlooking the ocean. We were close to town, beaches, the grocery store and the rest of the island. Midweek housekeeping was a nice touch too. We had groceries delivered so that we had food when we got there. Catered to was excellent LOVED IT!!!

“Best vacation ever”
Reviewed March 9, 2014 for a stay in March 2014

We booked this property via Catered to Vacation Homes. They arranged for Roy to pick us up from the ferry. He was extremely friendly and knowledgable about the island and property. The property is actually better in person. It is clean and has every supply to make your stay comfortable. They had large bedrooms that are tastefully decorated, top of the line kitchen supplies, beach chairs, cooler, binoculars, spices, condiments, toiletries and basic paper products. The location was perfect! The views were breathtaking! It was close enough to get quickly to Cruz bay, but far enough that you felt secluded. You are not close to your neighbors, we never saw anyone. We enjoyed watching the activity in Rendezvous Bay and Ditleff point. You can even see St Croix if the sky is clear. There is no need for AC in the main living area because of the constant breezes. We had no issues with bugs because we used the bug spray that was provided. We did see iguanas but they didn't bother us in any way. The only negative is we didn't know how to get our bedroom TVs on. We could have called for assistance but we really had no need. Maid service came mid-week. We felt completely safe. Kim and Jason at Catered To Vacations were helpful and knowledgeable. They promptly answered all emails and assisted us in having our groceries ordered ahead of time from Starfish Market. The only issue was that Starfish Market did not deliver and stock our house with groceries as we requested. But there may have been a communication issue with our friend. I would definitely recommend catered to vacation homes and this property. It was above and beyond any property we have ever seen. St John has so much to offer and see. We will be back!

I must admit the villa was beautiful but unfortunately was bitten up first night there. Beautiful wooden arch doors open but no screens so no way to keep Mosquitos out. Second night was awakened at 2am to a "critter" in the attic gnawing at bedroom air conditioner...3rd night same..called mgnt co. and they came right away to remove animal and exterminate. Thought we were far from civilization but found 2 Jehovah witnesses at the door..SAVE ME......one arch door broke mid week and maintenance there again...lost electricity right before Super Bowl but was pleasantly surprised that we had a generator....yea!!! But NO TV SERVICE...missed almost half of game..seems like it was not our time to be there. This was our 3rd time at different villas on St John and never had any issues..Like I said beautiful villa but bring bug spray. Hot tub cover should be bleached or chlorinated...itsmelled very musty/moldy....needed to shower to get smell off us....so many negative things but we made it a great time anyway..Many beach chairs and floats...kitchen well supplied..great pool...rating would be higher if not for all inconvenience...

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you encountered any issues during your stay.

While the villa is described as having an open living area that may be closed by closing the shutters when it may be buggy, there is unfortunately very little that can be done to alleviate the amount of flying insects anywhere on the island when they are in bloom, as it was during your stay. While every villa is on an extensive extermination schedule the island will always have critters and any issue can be quickly addressed.

Additionally we would like to mention that the power outage before the Superbowl was an island wide power outage which affected everyone on St. John and St. Thomas. While a generator can ensure that there is power inside the villa it cannot restore power or service from the cable company. The awful timing of the power outage left more than a few sports fans on St. John disappointed that evening.

We hope that you had a pleasant vacation despite the inconvenience and we hope to welcome you back again in the future.
