“Wonderful place to stay in St. John!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2011

My husband and I just returned from our amazing stay at Carnival Beach House! We stayed from March 30 - April 12, 2011. We are both so happy that we chose to stay here for our vacation. Bonnie (one of the caretakers) met us right at the car ferry dock and we followed her to the villa - this was great touch as it would have been a bit of a challenge to find it the first time on our own. She gave us a tour of the villa, showed us how things worked and then we hardly ever saw her or Doug (the other caretaker) after that, which made it feel that much more like your own private oasis. The villa isn't huge but it was just the right size for the two of us. We stayed in the unit upstairs (which I recommend). It has a wonderful balcony overlooking the pool, the beautiful landscaping, and the ocean. Inside there is a nice sitting area with TV and a dining table for two. The kitchen is small but it definitely worked for us. Since food can be pretty expensive on St. John it was nice to have the hotplate and grill to make meals. The fridge is also small but it never was a problem. The supermarket is not too far away so we just made a point to stop every other day and get a few items for the fridge and not try to load it up. The many coolers they provide in different sizes also helped to keep ice in and take to the beach. The bathroom is nice and large. The only complaint I can say about our stay was that we got four towels for our almost 2 week stay and they did get a little musty smelling. We could have maybe asked for more (?) but didn't. They also provide beach towels, beach chairs and floaties that you can take to the beach with you. We loved having our own private pool as well and spent a good deal of time in it. The beach is rocky so not really a beach you can chill at but once you got in it was sandy. Snorkeling is pretty good off that beach, we saw lots of turtles, spotted eagle rays, regular rays, and lots of other fish. There were two iguana's that would frequent the villa. They would hang out around the pool or on top of the bougainvillea bushes!! It was so nice at night to have all the doors and windows open and listen to the surf come up on the rocky beach and all the jungle sounds to lull you to sleep. But it was also nice to have the air conditioning to use if you get too hot. The no seeums are no joke, we got pretty bit up by these things and felt like we spent a good deal of time itching! We did bring bug spray but didn't utilize it enough to keep them away. The mosquitos were around but not bad at all. The location of the villa is perfect, not too far outside of Cruz Bay to be an annoyance when you want to go into town and right off another road that will take you over to the east end or to Center Line Road. Starfish Market is a really nice grocery store and there is also the Pine Peace Market which is located a bit closer to the villa and has good prices and friendly people working. Since there aren't many reviews on trip advisor (which frustrated me when trying to decide whether or not we wanted to book this place) I can tell you that there are guest books in the villa going back to 2007 filled with RAVE reviews about how much people were so happy they chose to stay at Carnival as well. This really is a jewel of a place to stay and we are already considering booking a trip for next year!!!

My husband and I stayed at Carnival Beach House for a week in August 2008 for our honeymoon. Our favorite part was the pool! After a long day exploring and beach-hopping, we'd hop right into the pool and lounge on one of the many floats available for your use. We also loved the beach chairs that were there for us to take and use as we wanted. A cooler also came in handy! (They provided that, too!) Snacks awaited us in the room, which was a thoughtful touch. Small, but nice accommodations. Don't plan on cooking gourmet meals, as someone else has said, as the fridge is rather small, and the cookplate is, too. There are plates and cookware and all sorts of items for cooking / grilling, though, if that's your thing. Great location! Beautiful sun rises! The only issue we had were the mosquitos. We had to use the zapper (which they also provided) quite a bit. Other than that, we had a great time, and would definitely recommend staying here!

This trip was booked through Caribbean Villas, which we found through Fodor's and Frommer's. Whenever you book something online, you are never sure if the actual property lives up to the promotional pictures and advertisements. In this case, the Carnival Beach House exceeded all expectations.
The property is about 3 miles from Cruz Bay, and you will need the suggested jeep to comfortably negotiate the steep roads. The reward is a beautiful, secluded getaway. The best pictures you can find online match the typical views from the house.
There are two studio apartments available. With just two of us, we were given the upper apartment (better view), and the lower apartment was unrented during our week. The accommodations are very well appointed and everything you need is in the apartment. The kitchen facilities are limited (one hot plate/burner, microwave, outdoor gas grill, coffee maker, small fridge), so don't plan on cooking elaborate meals. We knew this going in, so it was not a serious limitation. You can't go hungry on St. John!
The bay is beautiful; the beach is rocky, but we spent most of our "water time" at the Beach House floating in the private pool. Exquisite sandy beaches with great snorkeling can be found all over the north shore of St. John, about a 20-30 minute ride.
We were met at the ferry dock at Cruz Bay, guided to our rental jeep and escorted to the property. It was all seamless and very professionally handled. The property caretakers were very attentive to any need we might have, but left us on our own to explore the island and the local environment.
We highly recommend this property for a relaxing vacation on a beautiful island.

Beautiful, quaint, private with a great pool overlooking the bay. Beautiful landscaping, rock work and beach. This is not a place for families that require all meals be cooked indoors! The kitchen area is small but adequate with a small refrigerator. Outdoor barbecue's are nice, clean and new. Their use with the convenient kitchen allows for more than adequate meal preparation. Plan on grilling fish or steaks! The outside patio of the upper and lower units are nicely done with flowers, traditional furniture and private views of Klein Bay. Naturally the upper unit has the best view almost totally panoramic. A path way leads to the beach area that was almost totally deserted when we were there. A few sail boats were anchored in the bay. The beach is rocky with patches of sand that seem to move with every tide. Great snorkeling and swimming in the rocky areas that fall off into the bay. If you require a sandy beach, jump in the car and join the crowds at several of the Park beaches close to town. We found the upper unit to be clean and tidy. The linens were new and clean. With the windows open to allow the cool afternoon breezes to circulate through the house with the ceiling fans on, we were very comfortable without air conditioning. We found the Carnival Beach House to be comfortable and private. We are retired, have owned a home in Mexico, traveled extensively in areas of the world such as Tonga, New Zealand and the West Indies in addition to Bare Boating the US and British Virgin Islands as well as Tonga. This is a great place to kick back, relax, do some snorkeling and swimming in both the pool as well as the ocean. An evening glass of wine on the patio as the sun sets, says it all.

We recently returned from our first trip to St John.
Loved the island, food, people, beaches, and snorkeling.

We used Christopher's Taxi and Dolphin Water Taxi to shuttle from STT to Cruz Bay. It was 100% worth the extra cost. Christopher's met us at the baggage claim and Matt (Dolphin) was ready to shuttle us off when we arrived at Red Hook. We saved at least 1 hour in travel time. *We will do this again next time*

Rented a Jeep with Penn's. This was one of the best decisions we made. Convenient but costly. ($92.00/day) Our jeep was very clean on the inside and in good working order. We parked at their lot when we were in town with no problems. *We will rent with them next time*

We stayed at Carnival Beach House - Klein Bay. After reading the many reviews we were convinced that our trip would be great! We were not disappointed.

The cottage (2 suites) is in a wonderful location on the south shore. Only 10 minutes from Cruz Bay once you get used to the drive. Klein Bay is peaceful, quiet and ROCKY. Don't be fooled by the pebble beach descriptions. My husband and I snorkeled out to Ditliff Point and saw a fair amount of fish, turtles, and grass. No coral in this area. Our teenagers loved the pool and having their own suite. Doug was a wonderful host. Picking us up at the dock and giving a quick downtown tour on the way to the cottage. Besides walking his dog (Trapper) we never saw him.

A few things that we felt needed some attention were:
- The suite was tight even for 2 people. When the 4 of us would have a meal we felt crammed. Unfortunately, we could not eat outside much because of the mosquitos. My daughter got eaten alive even with deet.
- The units needed a good heavy cleaning. Spider webs in the bathroom, dead bugs in the corners, old mouse trap under a couch on the porch. And the ants (see below). We ended up cleaning a bit during the week with softscrub.
- Ants in the suites made it VERY difficult to enjoy our meals. These micro-ants (very small, red, but numerous) were into everything. We had a zipolock bag of pretzels on the counter and within 24 hours they had made their way into the bag and were everywhere on the counter. Then they made their way into my daughters carry on bag which had cough drops in it. We put every bit of food, gum, candy, even cough drops in the fridge (which by-the-way is only a dorm fridge). Needless to say we ate out more than we had planned, which was okay but not what we expected.
- Safes in the room are just lock boxes which will help in case of a fire but anyone can come in and just walk away with your stuff. We kept all our valuables on us.

These above things are trivial compared to other possible travel nightmares. We truly had a great vacation and are planning to return next year. *We will not return to Carnival Beach ONLY because we fell in love with the East End of St. John.*

Here a few other things we experienced
* FishTrap - overated
* Morgan's Mango - excellent food and service
* Skinny Legs - great burgers and fun atmosphere
* Hidden Reef Eco-Tours - 3 hour kayak/snorkel was great!
* Waterlemon - best snorkeling on the island from the shore
* Cruz Bay Watersports - rented a RX mask and float belt, nice people
* Groceries - liked Dolphin Market over Starfish
* Lameshur - not worth the drive, beach was not maintained
* Roads - go slow especially in rain and at night

Can't wait to go back!
