My husband and I just returned from 4 nights at Sapphire Beach Resort in St. Thomas. We'd been looking forward to this trip for several months. We were in for a big surprise! While the beach is loverly our accmodations left much to be desired. We found the resort in dire need of updating. The shower/tub was badly scratched and the tile moldy. The toilet brush tucked behind the stool, not in a holder, but just lying on the floor. There were 2 sinks only one in working condition. The kitchen sink had rust all around the rim. The floor tile itself had several stained areas both in the bathroom and living area. Our telephone didn't work and we reported it to the desk everday. I bought a phone card but didn't have correct change for the pay phone. I went to the desk to get change and was told they weren't allowed to handle money. It was finally fixed after 8 P.M. the night before we left. The kitchen outlet didn't work so to make coffee we had to set the coffee pot on top of the fridge. While the poolside bar/grill was open everyday, the main restraunt was only open 1 night out of the 4. The staff was friendly and tried to be helpful but we were always told "I'll let them know". The sliding glass door jam was so rusty it was all we could do to open and close it AND there was such a gap we could put two fingers in it. We know of at least 2 people that were so upset they checked out and into another hotel. So if you're thinking of staying here be aware. We will never go back. Extremely disappointed.

To add to all the reasonable comments here: one reputable travel guide gives Sapphire Beach Resort a recommendation “with serious reservations” and points out that the facility is owned by “two dueling management companies” making for confusion in checking in, inconsistent conditions and amenities. One company, Antilles Resorts, (based in St. Croix, I believe) has no on-site office, way fewer amenities, and the competing Sapphire front desk won’t help you. The bottom line is to avoid the Antilles Resorts sections of Sapphire Beach Resort. You can have a great time here, but just be warned about these difficulties.

While attemepting to check in we heard that electricity had been out for quite a while in one building. We began to worry but were treated to a drink in the bar by a very nice bartender. Next we decided to have lunch at the pool restaurant while still waiting for our room. (The time was well past
the 3:00 check in time) The food were good so we decided not to worry about the sort of rundown look of the resort. After all it is an island! We were finally taken to our room which was on the "marina", if you could call it that! The room was horrible and also had not been cleaned. The bellman was very apologetic and called housekeeping. Housekeeping was the least of the problem. The refrigerator was rusted as were the bedside tables. The lamp over the table was hanging by a frayed cord. The bathroom was disgusting and the final straw was upon opening the patio doors and seeing yellow tape like a crime scene! The entire back area had 5 foot trenches with dirt piled high and outlined in yellow tape. The entire place was depressing and not where we planned to spend our trip. We were able to book the last room at the Ritz Carlton and quickly had a cab called to take us away! He dropped us at the Ritz and overcharged us by 10.00 but it was worth it to leave the Flagship building at Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina!! The Ritz Carlton was a different world and well worth the move!!!

I have one to St Thomas several times during the past couple years. Obviously, I like the island. Sapphire, in my view, is one of the best beaches in the Carribbean. It is clean, scenic and has good snorkeling. The condos (some of which are in a hotel plan), need some spruing up. This is not the Ritz Carlton Club, nor does it pretend to be. If you are planning a vacation look for units to rent at Sapphire that have been renovated. Several are available with new kitchens, bathrooms and interior appointments that are up several knotches from the norm- these can be found at the same rates that the majority of unrenovated units lease for.

Dates: July 8-10, 2005 and current. Unfortunately, this property is in dire need of renovation – it looks as if it has been rode hard and put away wet. Large portions of the property have been scheduled for renovation for quite some time – and are still waiting. That said, the good news is that while the hotel portion of the place seems to be going belly up, the restaurants are under new management and are being completely renovated. They don’t just have new names – The Blue Water Grille, Flip Flops Pool Bar, and the Blue Martini Lounge - and signs, they have a new chef, new beverage supplier, new food and drink menus and some new staff! The beach is as beautiful as ever – and open to the public. Come to the beach, enjoy the restaurants … but skip the hotel, whose surly front desk personnel and housekeeping staff who openly and rudely solicit for tips fit right in with the worn-out hotel buildings.
