“Overall a good experience”
Reviewed May 22, 2010

Just returned from a 7 day stay at the Elysian Beach Resort in St. Thomas. I was traveling with my spouse and are two young children. Generally we found the Elysian was a good choice for us. The exterior of the resort is exceptionally nice and the grounds are exceptionally well maintained. The facility was well landscaped and was right next door to the Ritz Carlton. In the evenings there was a guard at the front gate and we always felt very safe at the resort. The pool is very nice and probably one of the top resort pool's on St. Thomas. The pool is just steps away from the beach making it very easy to go between the pool and the beach. The on site dining options were both very good. I was exceptionally satisfied with Ainsley's the beach bar given the quality of the food and the reasonable prices. Robert's the second eating establishment on property was also very good although a little pricey, which isn't uncommon on St. Thomas.

We rented a two bedroom condo on VRBO and felt the pictures provided by the owner when we booked the trip were accurate. The two bedroom unit included a full kitchen and in unit washer and dryer, which made things easier when traveling with small children. The beds were comfortable and the room was well stocked with everything we needed to enjoy our stay including dishes, silverware, sand toys, snorkeling gear, beach towels etc. Our room had an excellent view of the harbor. The room was nicely appointed, but definitely had the feeling of a privately owned condo as opposed to a four star resort. Since we rented from a private owner we did not have maid service. We did not use the fitness center, but it did look adequate. Wi-Fi service is available in the rooms for an additional feel of $35 for the week.

The only drawback to this property is that in my opinion the beach is only "average" when compared to some of the surrounding properties. The swimming area is a little rocky and with the marina right next store results in the view being impacted by the boats in the harbor. We still found the beach very enjoyable, but would definitely recommend a day trip to Sapphire Beach and Megans Bay two of the premier beaches on the island.

Overall I was very satisfied with the resort. I would definitely return if looking to rent a condo on the ocean to get the added space that you would not get in a standard hotel room. I would recommend renting directly from one of the unit owners as opposed to the resort as their seemed to be many people disappointed with rooms they had rented directly from the resort. This is a very quiet location that seems to be mainly frequented by families and older couples. It is a great option for someone looking to rent a condo on the ocean, but it would not be my first choice if I was looking to rent a single hotel style room.

Upon our arrival we were greeted by front desk staff, everyone was very attentive and friendly. A gentleman came with a truck and brought us to our room. Since we had our 11 month old daughter with us, we asked to be close to the pool and on the main level... all of which we had.
The room is dated, for sure, it could have used a really good cleaning, the floor especially and shower/tub area... but all in all, it was fine. The air conditioner worked fine, the bed was OK, it was held up by plywood and it sagged somewhat. Our room was plenty spacious for the 3 of us, we had a king sized bed and a rolling crib for our daughter. It was good. The balcony overlooked the pool and was plenty spacious, 2 chase lounce chairs, table and chairs for eat.
The dining at the resort was extremely expensive. A skinny man named Kevin has a monopoly on the dining. There are 2 restaurants, he owns them both, Ainsley's and Roberts. Both had good food, again very expensive! Ainsleys is casual where Robert's is more upscale.
We took a taxi to Red Hook one day and that was nice, there is a great coffee/latte cart there with delicious drinks... the mocha freeze is to die for!
We then took the ferry to St. John for the day and it was beautiful, highly recommend this. We had lunch and cocktails as "The Beach Bar" and enjoyed every second of it.

The hotel pool was fine, clean and plenty big. The beach was rocky, very rocky. We are pool people so that made us happy that the pool was good.

We only met friendly nice people who worked at the resort, no one was rude like other reviews said. It was going into off season, so it was not busy.

We enjoyed our stay at the Elysian. If you was 5 star resort stay next door at the Ritz for 4 x as much money!

Our family had three rooms. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Rooms were clean, but not elegant. Two story unit with large deck was our favorite place for coffee in the morning and a night cap before bed. Except for poor service at Robert's restaurant (food is good, not great) we enjoyed our stay and would come again. We had high expectations for Roberts and our dining there (twice) was major disappointment. Blue Moon Cafe is nearby, and is a much better choice.
Units are poorly designed for conserving energy, so if you are concerned about being 'green' this resort is not for you.

stayed 10 nights in a loft unit with bed upstairs and murphy bed downstairs. Full kitchen and two balconies. The unit we stayed in was clean, comfortable and had a great view. I will say there are units that could make your stay here much less pleasant.
As with most places in the islands there are a few areas of the rooms and resort that show more wear than resorts in the US, but nothing was that bad to complain about.
Pool area is very nice with many iguana's wondering around. Take advantage of the afternoon happy hour at the pool bar, Ainsley's bar. ( 1/2 price adult drinks )
Beach has plenty of chairs and both sunny and shaded area's. You can see a few fish and my son found and returned a very nice starfish at the elysian beach.
Kids enjoyed the 4 or 5 cats around the property and they named each one.
Front desk staff could be friendlier but I don't believe they are intentionally rude just not real outgoing personalities.
Overall had a better than expected stay and would return again to this resort.
Note - I am not a Wyndham time share owner.

I had very low expectations from the previous reviews. These people just must be expecting a Ritz experience for $150/night...Thats not going to happen...The St Thomas Ritz is around $675/night...The problem you have is people focus on the small stuff. You're on vacation, stop inspecting and complaining every little thing that is wrong with your room and get out and enjoy yourself! That is exactly what we did.
CONS:
-Beach was kinda crappy. Yes there is some sort of sewer line running through the bay, but the water was not gross at all...it is just rocky/shelly and not very enjoyable. Go to a neighboring beach, or take the ferry to St John and go to Trunk Bay.
-Cold Water. The shower in the room was luke warm for about 3 minutes, and then cold for the rest of the shower. Shower quickly!
-Dated furniture and old TV...Not a big deal though...I mean - really. Its OK!

PROS:
-Excellent service at the restaurants/bars
-CHEAP food and drinks...$3.00 Happy Hour drinks.
-The beach bar/lounge has great pizza and sandwiches and is affordable. Also great staff!!
-The Pool is very nice and relaxing. Good temperature. Although its annoying to lug around a key ring to open the big clanky obnoxious gate!
-The room was very, very clean.

The thing you need to know about St Thomas, is the taxi's are EXTREMELY ridiculously expensive. Like other reviewers we were VERY conservative but still spent about $350 over 4 days on taxi service. Id probably rent a car next time...but very treacherous to drive on your own here.

I would highly recommend taking the water taxi to St John. It is a beautiful island.

The best meal we had on the island was at Havana Blue. It is at the Frenchmans Reef Marriott and our dinner was so wonderful there!! Highly recommended.

All in all...Dont listen to the bad reviews, this is a nice place to stay for a few days...Sure the rooms are kinda dated, sure there are stairs you have to walk down to get to the pool, and sure the beach is not all that fantastic...but this is a nice place...The restaurants/bars, pool area, beach area...All very nice.

Check in was a breeze. Stayed for a week, The large suites are extremely comfortable with two baths. Stayed a couple of nights in one of those, then moved to a single bath, one bed condo. The office always has fresh towels for the beach. The food at Roberts was excellent albeit pricey, but thats paradise and convienance. The grounds were kept well. The pool was clean. They have onsite bookings for sailing and a powerboat trip to the BVI's at reduced rates of 50%. The beach is raked every morning and the snorkeling is great around the rocky shoreline just a few minutes swim from the beach. They have a taxi service that stands by 24 hours a day if you did not rent a car. Excellent Place!

Where do I start? I went there for Spring Break with my spouse. The room they give use was horrible. It was dirty and had several mosquitos in the room. The tub was dirty and the beds were uncomfortable. I literally cried. I went to Elysian as part of the Wyndham Discovery Package ( never get that by the way) so I called Wyndham to ask to be placed at another hotel. The representative was NOT helpful.

Thank God for the visiting hotel manager on site that day. She booked us into a one bed room at the Bluebeard Beach Resort. That was much nicer.

Take my advice. Say no to Elysian Beach Resort. I wouldn't want even my worse enemy to go through that!!!!
