“It was just ok.”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

First of all, you needs lots of cash. Taxis, ferries and some other places did not take credit cards. The resort did, but you could not run a tab at the bar or restaurants there. Having to carry your cards or cash was an inconvenience. Someone had even lost their credit card by the pool, but fortunately for them, an honest person turned it in. The check-in was good, but our room in building L was on the 2nd floor and looked out at another building. The floor was a bit dirty when we entered and the check-in clerk got snappy and said that she would clean it herself. Ok, she did, but it should have been cleaned in the first place. The bed was very comfortable and clean. This is not the Ritz and we knew that. There is a lot of walking up and down steps, so be prepared. Sangria's was passable, but nothing great. The salads and the pizza were very good. The drinks are pricey even at happy hour. The Fish Market restaurant was expensive and another guest told me to save my money. So I did. Beware of the sand fleas! I must have ended up with 20 very itchy bites. There is a beach area that is ok, but you will need to go to Cinnamon Bay or St. John's or Virgin Gorda to have a gorgeous beach experience. If you don't mind driving on the left hand side of the road, rent a car. It will save you money and you can tour around on your own. The check-out was ok too, but just remember that you will be charged $22.00 a day for the energy surcharge. It was ok here, but I would not go back. Not that I had a negative experience, but it was a bit of a come down after staying at some really quality Carribean resorts.

Terrible place for vacation, I hate it so much, staff is unprofessional, the place need upgrade, I was moved to different rooms due to lack of cleanliness. There was hair and sand in the bed that I was told was"just cleaned". This place need an cleaning upgrade. He view is bad just like most of the pictures posted. I was asked to pay for my electrical usage! Which I never did at any hotel before. I do not recommend this hotel. I was so excited to get out of that place.( I suggest their CEO pay them a visit like the "undercover boss show". )

This is a nice getaway with a few drawbacks. It is in a great location just 5 minutes from Red Hook and about 30 minutes from the airport. Expect to pay about 12-15 pp for a cab from the airport unless you rent a car. We took cabs everywhere and for 4 people that added up.
The checkin process is smooth here-our paperwork and keys were ready and they gave us 4 beach towels which you can exchange daily if the laundry is ready (2 days we had to wait until next day)
The room was as expected if you've been to the islands. I thought it was very clean and the kitchenette surprisingly well supplied. Our first night it rained and the roof leaked!!!! Actually dripping on my husbands head in the night. We moved the bed and that solved the problem. There were small ants everywhere even though we kept all food in the fridge or microwave.
Groceries are expensive so even if you plan to cook in expect to pay high prices except for rum!
Bath towels were supplied at our request promptly and we constantly ran out of toilet paper and this was also provided quickly. We thought service was efficient but not overly friendly.
The beach was beautiful and groomed daily by resort staff--with the exception of the bugs that ate us alive we loved the beach. The pool is beautiful and could use a few more chairs. The hot tub is about as hot as a hot tub can be--use caution!
Here are my problems with the place--they charge you a 22 energy fee which in and of itself is not a problem but why not include it in the rate? Or, make it 30 and offer wifi ( separate charge) fitness center (separate charge) and watersports (separate charge). It really turned me off that you had to pay to use the fitness center. Even the lowest level hotels have a treadmill and some free weights.
The Caribbean fish market is a very good expensive restaurant. The other restaurant onsite sangrias has decent food but a limited menu. Don't expect any bargains an you can't charge anything to your room so expect to carry you wallet around with you.
I did love the folks from the beach hut but they are not affiliated with the resort.
Overall, it's a decent clean place to stay. Calling it a resort is overstating it a bit. For older couples or people with very young children or someone who wants low level of activity in a quiet place this is the right spot. Just don't expect a full service hotel feel or out of the this world service.

In our hopes to use our Wyndham timeshare points we decided to try the Elysian. Having read the reviews I was not quite sure how I would feel about the hotel. We were pleasantly surprised. The room was totally adequate. We have a room with two double beds, small kitchen, bathroom and balcony. Was it the Ritz Carlton...not quite but it fit the bill. Good news is that we really enjoyed ourselves. The beach is pleasant, my husband was able to find someone to play tennis with everyday, the workout facility (it is an outside concession so you pay a daily or weekly fee for its use) was adequate, and it was a great base to go off and enjoy all that St. Thomas has to offer.
There were a few "disconnects'" that we experienced regarding the staff at the hotel. For example, when the toilet started leaking the front desk was responsive and adequately fixed the problem. The disconnect was that someone was needed to come by and clean the toilet and supply new towels. Another example was that the front desk clerk did not know how to run through a charge card and had me wait until the bookkeeper was available to come by and do it for her. While none of this is earth shattering it is indicative of little roughness around the edges.
We took cabs everywhere. I am so glad that we chose NOT to drive. To drive on the reverse side of the road but use American cars is quite unsettling. Most of the taxis are these large vans that drive in the middle of the road. In the end, taking cabs was cheaper and a whole lot safer than us driving.

We transferred our timeshare to the Elysian Resort and were told that we we getting an upgrade once we got there. What they failed to tell us was that the upgrade was at an older looking facility, Blackbeard's Castle, which had a restaurant which only served breakfast.

After convincing the person at Blackbeard to call the Elysian back we got a room. We then found out that the reason then sent us somewhere else, was because they had overbooked.

The Elysian is all a-la-carte. There is a fitness center, which you have to pay extra for. If you want internet, then you need to use it in the office. Otherwise it is over $200 per week. The Caribbean Fish market restaurant was wonderful. They need a better menu at Sangria's.

Although the grounds were kept well, the beds need new matrices and up to date televisions.

Bring lots of money with you!

We've been to the Elysian twice now, and returned because we loved the convenience of the location on a calm bay (great for letting our toddler play at the beach) and the pool and two great restaurant options. We got a unit in the building closer to the tennis courts this time (because going up and down the hill with a stroller was a killer last time with a one year old.) We love the grounds, and very friendly staff, but the resort has some improvements to make to make it perfect. For starters we awoke the first morning to a loud noise next door and no water at all. Apparently the desalinization pump went out and it took several hours to repair it and restore water (albeit very low water pressure, and terrible temperature control in the shower. It went from very hot to cold and back and forth. Not a good experience when trying to bathe a sandy toddler, with no tub either.) The water situation improved, but only by receiving many water deliveries from an equally loud truck right outside our deck sliders. Understandable considering the water problem had to be fixed, but still, it kinda ruined the peaceful view and quiet. The noise was also coming from the younger guests next door one night. It was late and their voices were so easily heard through the lockout unit doors that open into the adjacent unit. It was manageable with a simple knock on their door, but just a heads up that if you're a light sleeper it will be a problem. We knew going into it what to expect, and honestly the service seems to have improved since last year, but the beds are still very uncomfortable. It makes a visit to the hot tub very necessary to work out the kinks. Unfortunately, the temperature of the hot tub was very often scalding hot. Hot enough to cook a chicken! We could've used about double everything in the kitchen. There were basically only two of everything. We cooked breakfast every day and several lunches/dinners in our unit so it would've been helpful to not need to run a half-empty dishwasher everyday just to have clean utensils, not to mention we had a kid with us, so we needed at least three of everything. Also, a non-stick pan is essential (every unit could use one of those!) So, we love the location, the beach the pool and the restaurants, but there were things we hated about it too. Got a great deal on last minute points reservation through Wyndham, so we took a much needed vacation. However, we may try a different resort next time, because the beds are just killer although the location is fantastic. The staff are really nice and very helpful, but the issues really seemed to be at a level beyond their ability to fix immediately.

Room Tip: Stairs are necessary everywhere, but if you have a stroller or wheelchair you must ask for a unit in...

For the first time traveling to the USVI, the Elysian was an excellent spot to stay at. Nestled in the SE corner of the island it was extremely quiet, clean, and romantic. The resort is perfectly located within a 5-10 minute cab ride to Red Hook, where there are a bunch of good little shops and bars as well as where you can catch the ferry to St. John ($6/pp). The Elysian is also only a $10/pp cab ride to downtown where there the street vendors are and more restaurants and bars.

The Elysian also has two restaurants on site; Sangria's and the Caribbean Fish Market. We didn't go to the Fish Market because they are only open for dinner from 5-11pm, but heard nothing but good things about it from other guests at the resort. We did go to Sangria's a few times for lunch and liked the food, service, and of course the sangria. The only drawback to Sangria's is that it is a bit expensive.

A few tips about the island:

1) Try to haggle with the cabbies.
2) Coki Point beach is absolutely beautiful and the snorkeling is fantastic.
2.a.) It's not a bad idea to bring your own snorkel gear unless you are OK with renting gear from an one of the many islanders at the beaches.
3) If traveling in to town, do not go around 3:00pm on a weekday as this is when school is letting out and the city becomes gridlocked.
4) Duffy's Love Shack (in Red Hook) is an awesome bar.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an ocean view... it is beautiful!
