“Beautiful and Spacious!!!”
Reviewed July 5, 2010

We are Marriott owner's in Panama City and always wanted to go to USVIs. We had a 2 bedroom condo with full kitchen. The kitchen has stainless appliances and granite countertops. King bed in master and 2 queens in spare bedroom. Each bedroom has it's own balcony. We had coffee each morning outside watching the daily cruise ships dock. Even though it wasn't our anniversary, I told the receptionist it was and see what she could do to give us fantastic room. She hooked us up on the top floor!

The pool is great for kids. Has a little water slide that was my 3 year son's favorite thing to do all trip. There are plenty of activities each day for kids put on by the Marriott. The pool restaurant, Sunset Cove, is expensive. But what do you expect from a Marriott?? Here's a tip--the pool bar charges $6 for Presidentes but the grocery market which is literally 15 feet away sells Presidentes for only $2!!! I went to the market, bought 4 Presidentes for $8, walked to the bar, and watched the World Cup saving $16. The food is just ok. The wings are small. The jerk wrap is spicey, which I liked.

Don't expect much help from the Marriott staff to recommend grocery stores. They told us to go to Gourmet Grocery which is the closet to the property-5min away. It was TERRIBLE!!!! It was gross. Do NOT go there. Either go to Kmart which is 5min from Gourmet Grocery or the Fruit Bowel which is across the street from Kmart.

I'd recommend renting a car. If you don't want to rent a car and you have little kids before you get into taxi ask the driver if he/she'll will be charging you for your kids. We didn't have a car one day and paid $30 to go to Iggie's. On the way back the driver didn't charge us for our 3 year old so it was $20. If you rent a car, get a Jeep. It's much more fun than a car and you definitely need it driving on the island and if you take the car ferry to St John.

Driving on the left side of the road is tricky. Especially most of the roads don't have lines on them. Also none of the streets have street signs like the States so be prepared for that.

I'd definitely recommend The Cove. It's beautiful, clean rooms, plenty of activities for the kids, close to shopping, and all the amenities of a Marriott property.

Frenchmans Cove was everything we wanted it to be. Every villa has an ocean view with a balcony out each bedroom. The pool and the beach were just steps away from the buildings and were immaculate. Grocery stores were a convenient 3-5 minute drive away and numerous restaurant choices ranged from a short walk or shuttle ride to the Marriott Frenchmans Reef and Beach Resort, a 5 minute to a 15 minute drive. The many fantastic beaches were accessible and not crowded during our stay. Yes, a car is almost a necessity in St Thomas because the taxis can get rather expensive charging per person.

My husband and I just returned from a 5-day stay at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove in St. Thomas. We went on the basis of a timeshare preview, and enjoying a few days in the Caribbean sun wth friends. I made the arrangements with Marriott over 8-months prior to our stay and was looking forward to a condo/room with a beautiful oceanview from our balcony. However, when we arrived on Friday afternoon we were assigned a condo on the first floor overlooking the roof of another building! We found out later at the timeshare presentation that was Marriott's plan all along - get you hooked and on site, put you in less than expected accomodations, then promise you that you'll receive first choice and "the best" once you become an "owner". Needless to say, during the presentation, the representative did indeed provide us with a tour of "an owner's unit" that was oceanfront overlooking Morningstar Beach and the property's lovely pool.

We had a 2BR/2BA unit, so we invited two friends to come along and enjoy the stay with us. The condo itself was very nice with a split bedroom floor plan, sofabed in the livingroom, and granite countertops w/stainless steel appliances. However, being on the first floor, the view was awful and the noise was more than expected.

The pool was somewhat difficult to access unless you were fortunate enough to be an owner and staying in one of the "owner's units" that were next to the pool. We had to take three elevators just to get down on the pool level to reach the pool. But once we were there, it was truly a beautiful pool with infinity edge and a small waterslide.

The beach was small but clean with ample chairs and umbrellas provided free of charge. However, the ocean was trecherous! My husband stepped on a cluster of sea urchins within two hours of our arrival and required a trip to the St. Thomas hospital emergency room! We took photos the next day when the tide was out of the thousands of sea urchins attached to the rocks and coral located just beneath the surface all over the ocean floor right in front of the complex! Swimmers and beachgoers BEWARE!!?!! There were NO signs notifying visitors and/or swimmers of the risk/hazard! Had there been any indication of the sort we all would have worn water shoes! One cannot see the dangers under the ocean water until it is too late! Just be warned! Also, of special note, when we got my husband back up to our unit, I called the front desk/customer service emergency number on our room telephone FOUR TIMES and NEVER GOT AN ANSWER or any help!!!!! Thank goodness the critter was not poisonous!! We put him in our car and drove him (in the dark after having been on the island for only a couple of hours and not even knowing where the hospital was!?!) without any assistance from anyone from Marriott!!! I was livid!! God forbid if he had been having a heart attack or similar ailment! I must say though that the personnel in the ER at the St. Thomas hospital were so kind and helpful from the time we walked through the door until we left. Kudos!!

On to other resort comments... We only ate at the poolside deli/bar, which like all of the eating establishments within this Marriott property, was somewhat pricey. Our order of nachos cost $12, as did my simple ceasar salad (with NO chicken!). The 2-for-1 happy hour drinks averaged $7-to-$9 each and were not very tasty by most standards.

Also, be aware of the HIGH COST of taxi's in St. Thomas. It is generally $10 per person to get anywhere on the island - and that is only for a one way trip! If you plan to stay for several days and/or see much more than the local area around the hotel complex, consider renting a car through HERTZ or one of the reputable agencies - you'll definitely get more for your money. Just know and remember that they drive on the LEFT side of the road - which can be very tricky!!

The Marriott Frenchman's Cove is definitely the premiere resort on St. Thomas as most of the other properties are old and show their age. If the economy were not so unstable right now and we were in a more comfortable position with buying a timeshare - then this would definitely be the place we would buy. The location in St. Thomas is ideal for venturing out and ferrying to other outlying islands such as BEAUTIFUL St. John, and also Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. We took a full daysail on the catamaran KURALU out of Soper's Hole, Tortola that took us to Sandy Spit (the BEST snorkeling!!) and White Bay on Jost Van Dyke (Soggy Dollar Bar and IVAN's Stress Free Bar). I only wish we had stayed longer so we could have spent several more days taking daysails to other islands.

We did tour the Marriott Frenchman's Reef hotel while staying at The Cove. And although the hotel was beautiful and the decor very island-appropriate, the pool was dirty and not well maintained, and there was no beach there. You had to trek down a hill to an adjacent property to reach the beach shared with the hotel - which made it very inconvenient if you were a hotel guest.

Again, the Frenchman's Cove condo units were great, and in a convenient location near downtown Charlotte Amalie and the cruise port of Havensight (good shopping). Just beware of the aforementioned items such as the view (unless you are a owner), the sea urchins and dangers in the ocean off the beach in front of the pool, the $$$ expense of taking a taxi versus a rental car, and driving on the opposite side of the road.

Overall, our stay was wonderful and relaxing, and we would love to purchase one of the Marriott Frenchman's Cove timeshare condos there. But we actually had the most fun visiting beautiful St. John (via short ferry from Red Hook @ $6pp/rt). But we would definitely return to St. Thomas - only if we stay at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove!

Frenchman's Cove is one of the nicest resorts we have had the pleasure of staying in for quite some time. As Marriott owners in Aruba, we traded our week to stay in St. Thomas this year and could not be happier. Everything about Frenchman's Cove was first class. The accomodations, views, staff, location, etc. all top notch. The rooms were new and very clean and everyone there greeted you with a smile! That goes a very long way.
St. Thomas itself was a delight. I had only been there on a cruise for a one day visit, but had always wanted to spend some time there. So glad we did. The weather, the beaches, St. John, the restaurants all amazing. Havanna Blue and Northside Bistro were my personal favorites and I would highly recommend them both.

Definitely rent a car and see the island. Driving on the left became second nature almost immediately, not to worry. Grocery shopping was a bit of a challenge, but we settled for Pueblo which was nearby and not too bad. Not as clean as I would have liked but the product was fine and the proximatey to Frenchman's Cove was good.

The Frenchman's Cove was definitely a 10+. My only negative comment would be people saving chairs in the pool area beginning at 6:00 am. Getting up at 6:00 am to save a chair at the pool is not my idea of a vacation, as a result we often did not get very good seats at the pool. We even noticed a couple that saved not only two lounges on the pool ledge, but also two under an umbrella in the corner all day and everyday. That hardly seems right, that two people could use four chairs all day long and get away with it. But that seems to be a problem in many resorts.

Frenchman's Reef, the Marriott hotel up the hill was very nice, but the staff was not nearly as friendly and kind. Especially the ticket girl at the shopping ferry. She acted like we were bothering her cell phone conversation. And the two dock workers were not very nice either. But the captains of the little tugs they use to shuttle people in to town were very nice and made up for the others.

All in all it was a very wonderful experience and I can't wait to go back!

It was our first time coming to St. Thomas. We live on the West Coast and getting there is an 18 hour trip. We stayed in a two bedroom villa at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove during the last week of Carnival. We were in the new Tortola building in room 325--there was some confusion in some of the reviews regarding how they number there rooms--the 3 is the building number, 2 is the floor and 5 is the villa number. We had a ocean front room with a spectacular view. We could see Hassel and Water Islands, Charlotte Amalie Bay and the cruise ships as they came and went. We also had a great view for the fireworks on the last night of Carnival. The villa's are typical of a Marriott Vacation Club so if you are an owner you know what you will be getting. The beds were very comfy and the villas were decorated nicely. The kitchen is not well stocked so keep that in mind if you plan to cook(one bowl, no platters, no BBQ tools). The outdoor BBQ's were great and the view while you BBQ is awesome. There is not a beach towel service at the pool so you only get one set of towels for the week(we asked for clean ones and they wanted $15 to change them). It is a good idea to bring your own detergent because the boxes at the Cove are $2 each and it adds up. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We only ate by the pool once. The food is a little pricy but was very good and the service was nice. The hotel has happy hour everyday(two for one drinks) and many free activities(water aerobics, movie in the pool, karoke night, etc...). The owners welcome party was fun with live music and rum punch. They also had local merchants come to sell there items. The pool is great and very warm. There are plenty of chairs around the pool and on the beach. There is no charge for chairs and umbrellas on the beach(like at other Marriott properties). The walk to the Reef Hotel is via a path and very easy to use. We used the Frenchman Reef pool and beach one day and it was great. The shuttle can take awhile so we found the path to be much faster. We loved the hotel location--it was central to everything and easy to get into town and to the other parts of the island.
We rented a car from Hertz and because our plane was delayed and we arrived late they were closed and we had to take a taxi to the Marriott(all the other car companies stayed open for the late passengers). Keep in mind there is an extra charge after midnight and luggage is also additional. It cost us $60 to get to the hotel and then we had to take a taxi back the next day to pick up our car. Of course they will not reimburse you for your expenses or trouble.
Grocery shopping is expensive(milk is $7.99 1/2 gallon, chips $8.49 a bag). We brought some food with us and then bought perishables when we got there. The Gourmet Food store in Havensight Mall is the best place to shop. The Fruit bowl is great for produce(across the street from K Mart) Avoid Pueblo if at all possible. The meat/produce is old and the store is dirty.
The beaches are spectacular. We loved Megan's Bay. We rented kayaks and found some remote beaches to go to. We also took the passenger ferry($6.00 PP one way) to St. John. Hertz won't let you take the car to St. John(Avis will). We went to Trunk and Cinnamon Bays. A taxi is $6.00 PP one way. Trunk Bay was beautiful--the sand is pure white and feels like flour between your toes. We got there early and went to the far right and had the beach almost to ourselves. The snorkeling is around the little island in the bay and is not great. We did see a barracuda. They have bathrooms and showers, a snack bar and rent chairs($7) and snorkeling gear($5). Cinnamon Bay is less crowded but you can't get a taxi to pick you up once you are there. The town of Cruz Bay is quaint and fun to shop and eat.
One really fun thing we did on St. Thomas was On Deck Racing($99PP) You become the crew of an America's Cup sailboat and race against other boats. You are given about 20 minutes of instruction by a captain and first mate and then take over sailing. It was a lot of fun. We would do it again in a heartbeat.
We didn't have great luck with the food in St. Thomas. Charlotte Amalie was very crowded due to Carnival so it was hard to go into town because of parking. We ate one night at Shipwreck Tavern on a recommendation from the hotel and the food was horrible(we were also appalled that they would add a 18% tip on 4 people) for sub-standard service. We ate at Havana Blue and had a mediocre meal at best and paid $230 for 4 with no alcohol. The best food we had was on the street during Carnival or what we cooked in our villa.
Carnival was a hoot. People really get into it. The adult parade was great--just know that it starts late(11-11:30am) and goes all day(5pm). The best costumes are late in the day. Bring chairs, umbrellas and lots to drink. We met the Lt. Governor of the Virgin Islands who greeted us on the parade route and took pictures with us.
We preferred the shopping downtown(opposed to the Malls). We took the shuttle boat into town and walked the streets. The tent vendors have the best prices. We were able to get great deals during Carnival because no one was shopping and the shops wanted to sell something.
We loved the weather and beaches of St. Thomas but will probably go back to Hawaii--it is so much closer to home.

Frenchman's Cove is simply beautiful. The view on the ride approaching the property is like no other in the many Caribbean islands we have visited, and waking most mornings to a cruise ship framing the large living room villa window, is a multi-million dollar view. The access to the hotel property next door is an added bonus, with its pools and great beach. Often people confuse the hotel and the timeshare property. They are very different, both nice, but different. FRENCHMEN'S REEF IS THE HOTEL PROPERTY; FRENCHMAN'S COVE IS THE TIMESHARE RESORT. There are pluses and minuses to each.

We rented a 2 bed unit at the Cove, it was very clean, spacious and comfortable and had nice views. We spent a lot of time at the pool and the kids loved it,especially the water slide. There were plenty of loungers around the pool where you could keep one eye on the kids and one on the the views of the ocean. The beach at the cove is small, Morning Star beach is much better, there is a shuttle that takes you over there.

We rented a car and I think that we probably spent the same as we would have spent on taxies for 4 of us (taxis charge per person). This was convenient as it allowed us to go to a nearby grocery store and stock up - the market by the pool only had the basics.

The poolside cafe at the cove is not great. Coco Joes on Morning Star Beach was a very nice spot for lunch. We went to Windows at the Reefs one evening the food was good and it is a lovely place on a warm evening but I felt it was just too slow if you have young children. it

We took a ferry to St John and went to Trunk Bay, which I highly recommend.
