“Best property on St. Thomas”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

Our family has stayed at this property several times and it is fantastic. Great pool, easy access to beach with great activities such as snorkeling, catamaran, etc. Villa's are fantastic all with ocean view. Resort is great for families or couples, and access to Morningstar beach and adjacent Marriott resort amenities (spa, several great resturants, infinity poos etc) are key.

Room Tip: Request the Tortola villa for a room right on the ocean where you can hear the sea at night.

We stayed at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove as Marriott Vacation Club owners from another resort. After reading some reviews here, I was afraid we were going to end up with a view of a dumpster. However, we were very happy with the view of the water from our second floor unit in the St John building which is in the row farthest away from the water. The resort explained to us that owners of this property have first right to choose rooms and that since so many owners return to this property, non-owners don't usually get the first-row building rooms or high floors. If I owned here, I'd want the same treatment. Although there was only one pool and the beach was pretty small, we never had a problem getting a chair in a nice location and it never seemed crowded. They had activities all day long and into the evening that kept the grandkids really busy. Yes, the drinks and food were expensive just as they are at every Marriott I've visited. That is why we went to the grocery store and did some cooking on the nice gas grills. And yes we did have to get on 3 elevators to get to the pool/beach areas, but it never seemed to be an issue. The room ice maker couldn’t keep up with our consumption so we stopped at the bar every day and got a bag of ice at no charge. Each evening they also had flavored liquor tasting for the adults. Everyone who worked at the resort was nice and had a great attitude. We’ve stayed at many Marriott resorts and this one was fabulous!.

This was a 4nt Babymoon trip (we also brought my husband's parents with us).
We had a choice to stay at the Reef or Morningstar, but we opted for the timeshare because we needed 2 bedrooms and the kitchen was a plus.

We stayed in Building D, second floor, right off the elevator, view of the roof of pool area. We had water views, just not a 100% unobstructed view as I had hoped. I asked the front desk to put me closest to the pool because I didnt want myself or my in-laws to walk very far to the pool area and beach, so they literally put us the closest room to the elevator and the lowest floor, the closest access to the pool/beach area. Whatever, it was fine.

Room:
Super clean, as described, no smell of mildew. There is a Kleenair device that filters or ionizes the air in the unit. They could vacuum better. Bathrooms are immaculate. Kitchen is well stocked with utensils and basics. Very convenient to have a washer dryer. We washed clothes and dried bathing suits everyday it seemed. Kinda bad wireless internet connectivity in our room.

Beach/pool:
I guess we arrived during a slow time because there wasn't a ton of people. Pool is small but nice. Beach is also small and quaint. Plenty of chairs in the pool and beach area. Need to be careful of the reef, but there is a small path you can walk through without shoes. They have snorkel gear to rent, but if you can bring your own, it's better--there are a ton of small fish. There are also inflatables to enjoy, a trampoline and a climbing wall. they looked like fun. We swam EVERYDAY. No wireless access at the pool area.

We visited the other properties using the shuttle they provide (Morningstar and Reef). The Reef hotel is really nice, you can tell the clientele there are couples, young vacationers and older families whereas the Cove is mostly retirees and large groups/young families, not as busy. The Reef pool area is large with multiple pool areas but was super crowded. Although they have bigger beach at Morningstar and Reef, and a better resort-feel, I still preferred the Cove because of it's intimacy.

Cons about the Cove:
Only one person at help desk at all times it seemed, and there was always people there with questions, just waiting....
The elevator is the SMALLEST and slowest elevator ever.
You had to take 3 elevators from Lobby to Pool area. Not good for those who are not physically fit. Lots of walking.

Didn't try any of the food options anywhere except for the grill next to the pool which wasnt bad at all. Pricey, but what on site restaurant isn't? If you can, eat off site or buy food (we did, we even brought a small rice cooker with us!)

Overall, if I had to go back, I would--compared to other comparable properties on the island. And we drove everywhere, so we know where everywhere else is situated and we were not disappointed with our stay. If you can (and if you are staying more than 2 days), rent a car--you'll get used to driving on the other side of the road and it's so much more convenient and cheaper than taxi-ing it everywhere. Don't rent from Hertz though!!!! And take the car over to St. John's where you will visit the most amazing beaches in the world.

Room Tip: Building D is smack in the middle, but ask for a high floor. You'll get the best views.

we traveled on last minute to St thomas to the cove.

we had a great time, the island reminded me of living in hong kong as they drove on opposite side of road and lots of steep hills and no shoulders. not a good place if you get car sick.

we got supplies at "food center" as the quality was good or at least better than other places on the island. (about 1 mile from red hook)

Marriott did a great job, a lady name christy parkins helped us plan out our week and made reservations for dinner and all. it was a great week. we did maugens bay one day (awesome) then coral world (we did the helmet walk underwater and it was cool) and then down to coki beach for more snorkeling. go to coral world in morning and then hit the beach. we ate lunch from the beach restaurant. (michelle on the beach took our order- it was the best grilled fish and jerk chicken we had the whole week)

went to st johns for a day and took the car. we rented from budget and they allow their cars to go to st johns. some other companies require you to rent a jeep to go to st johns. we did the island tour (stopped at skinny legs for lunch) and then to trunk and cinnamon bay for snorkeling. two ferry companies will honor each other's tickets, the third car ferry will not honor the other tickets. last car ferry back was 7pm. $50 R/T as cheap as passenger ferry.

we also ate at twisted cork and pie whole in french quarter part of town. Bella Blu and Hook line and sinker were said to be good also. We also ate at bannana view at bluebeard hotel for the view and Mims near bolango bay. Joan was an excellent waitress and brought out some sample shrimp. setting right on the water, similar to the beach house on Kaui.

Duffy's love shack in red hook for fast pub food coming back from St johns.

great beaches on the island, other folks at the resort said they rented a boat and it took them snorkeling all day and to BVI (jost Van Dyke) and they hit Foxies and Soggy Dollar bars. they said good time with a bigger group. Resort also had a great beach, and morning star available on the marriot hotel property.

also check out the havenschimdt mall near the boat docks. they actually had great souveniours and you can by cruzan rum and they pack it up for checked luggage on the way home. no fee from the airlines. We also toured the old down town, most of those guys can sell for about 20% of list price for jewelry. just walk out or to the next store and they come down fast in price.

nice trip.

Went with some friends for the week in mid-July. The time-share itself was beautiful, but the facility itself was poorly situated. In order for me to get from my St. John's Villa (I asked for a top floor to get a better view of the ocean), I had to use 3 elevators to get to the pool/beach. As I found the time share pools and beach to be very crowded, we went to the beach at the hotel, but there was no beach as the hotel is set into the cliffside. (And their pools were crowded as well.) So we went to the beach at the Reef, and there we were veryhappy! Only problem was that the internal transportation shuttle bus system had a two-tiered system -- one for the time share only and another for the hotel and the Reef. It took on average 20 minutes to get the proper shuttle. The 3 restaurants on the property that we did visit were very good (we cancelled at Blue Havana). We did eat locally at some nice restaurants: Mim's, Pesce, and the best place of all, Oceana -- this place is a must! It is pricey, but well worth it. The food was exceptional, and the view was spectacular! The Cellar was a 'New York wanna be' that didn't make it. And while we missed the show at Iggy's, we had fun despite our late arrival. I would skip the trip to St. Thomas, and would find another snorkeling trip beside The Cat. The trip was for 3 hours, but they only served you after the second hour. And while the house punch thereafter was flowing, there wasn't sufficient fruit or chips for the entire boatload of passengers. And the staff really was not all that nice, truth be told. I've been on over 25 catamaran excursions, and this was really the pits.

The shuttle and villa location issues did really take away from the vacation. But their staff was very, very nice, and the room very pretty, hence the mixed feelings. All told, I think I'd go back to St. Kitts or Aruba.........

We love our MVCI membership and this property did NOT disappoint. I read all the reviews and can't believe anyone would give it a bad review. We stayed in the Tortola building (high floor) and this is by far the best location on the property (in my opinion). Unobstructed views and easy access to beach, pool and Marketplace. We cooked most of our own meals and got our groceries at a place called Gourmet Gallery which is where most of the locals shop, especially for fruit, veggies and meat. It was more expensive, but we were not as shocked as i expected to be compared to US prices. We did have an amazing dinner at Havana Blue which is on the Marriott property next door, but also figured out the SandBar restaurant downstairs from Havana Blue has some of the same menu items and has a GREAT happy hour with tapas and a just a few short steps from the beach!! Something I didn't see on any other review is the lighted kayak tour that you can book through the Marriott and takes off from their dock. This is a nighttime tour around the cove and surrounding area of the Marriott property with kayaks that have lights around the edge and a GLASS BOTTOM so you can see all the cool stuff below!! We had a great trip overall and booked a day trip to Jost Van Dyke through ONE LOVE CHARTERS (look this guy up and see my review of that trip separately). Good luck and have a great trip!!

We traded our timeshare in Orlando this year for a week in St Thomas at Frenchman's Cove and I cannot say enough about the location. The staff was friendly, helpful and obviously encouraged to make your stay exceptional.

The resort villas are well appointed with nice kitchens, great amounts of space and nice bathrooms. They also have washer and dryers which make packing fewer items and drying the swimming gear easy. The buildings are well maintained and you feel safe everywhere you go at any time of the day or evening. The resort is well located on the SE side of the Island and a great jump off point for visiting/exploring the entire island. I would recommend renting a car to make it around the island. It cost us about $350 for a full week and you will easily spend more on cabs if you venture out everyday like we did.

The pool, beach and the fact that you have access to the Marriott next door make this a perfect spot for everyone. We spend the days exploring the island, beaches, Charlotte Amalie and neighboring islands and then relaxed at the pool and beach at the resort.

While the kids played in the pool, I would use the natural gas bbqs, that were centrally located between buildings, to cook dinner.

We will try and get back to this location in the future as it is one of the nicest timeshare locations we have visited1

Room Tip: Ask for a room in a building close to the pool. Not a big deal if you do not get it, but it will li...
