Miller Manor Guest House
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We lucked into Miller Manor resulting from a referral from Bunker Hill when they were full.

Marge and Harry were outstanding hosts, making us feel very comfortable. Our party used several rooms, and they accommodated a very late check out from one room so we could shower right before going to the airport.

The setting is excellent on the edge of the hill above the harbor (just up from the BVI ferry and St. Croix Seaplane docks). The public areas include an entry courtyard with trees, a lower level broad patio with picnic tables that was great in the late evening, and an upper level covered patio where Marge and Harry served simple breakfast items, and (with the help of Scott) early evening drinks. The early evening on the covered patio felt wonderfully convivial with other guests, hummingbirds flitting around, and views across the harbor, while the hosting cats and dogs were sitting on the floor. It was walkable to downtown or to Frenchtown for dinner, but one should note that it is an uphill climb to get back. The rooms were all quite comfortable, but the common space and the hosting was extraordinary.

This review is really just to confirm what others have said: Miller Manor is a great find and if you have the opportunity, it is a great choice of a place to stay in Charlotte Amalie.

The way we found Miller Manor was a bit round-about. We originally booked with Bunker Hill (which looked nice as well), but just before we were to leave to go sailing (we were staying at Bunker Hill on our return), they wrote to say they did not have rooms. They found us alternatives at Miller Manor.

We were greeted by Marge on our arrival, who got us immediately settled in to four rooms, including one of what I would rate as a premier room (105) that had a private balcony overseeing the bay. We also had another room with a private balcony and two that opened on to a joint, very large balcony with tables and chairs. All of the rooms were quite comfortable and as much as might be expected. They are well air conditioned, have moderate sized (but compact) refrigerators that worked well, ceiling fans and closet space.

The public area includes another large balcony where drinks and breakfast foods are served, reading areas (with lots of books), a shelf of toys (snorkels/masks/fins, etc.), a computer w/ printer, and a few friendly dogs and cats.

In addition to the physical niceties, the place is made just that much better by Marge, Harry and Scott who all go out of their way to help out. Indeed, they may be the highlight to staying there.

Oh... the location is also very convenient if you come in by ferry as it would be quite walkable if you were going by backpack. in fact, you can walk down to the ferry just about as fast as you can drive down. The airport is a 10 minute drive away. You can walk to restaurants and the shops. We parked outside (though you park on the side of the streets, which makes it tight. The locals turn their outside mirrors in).

Room Tip: Room 105 probably has about the best view and is quite comfortable.

Miller Manor has a true homey atmosphere. Set into a hillside above Charlotte Amalie's harbor, Miller Manor is unpretentious, and very welcoming. Harry and Marge go TOTALLY OUT OF THEIR WAY to ensure their guest's comfort. There is a fabulous view from the deck of the harbor and the cruise ships, with a rooftop bar,and resident Scott mixing up a killer Zombie. There's a snack menu for most times of the day, and Harry would brew coffee for me every morning. Light breakfast comes with most rooms, and was perfect for the early mornings. There's a washer/dryer, detergent in vending machine etc. They have a HUGE library on site, as well as internet access. We stayed in a smaller unit, and all was fine. Many units have lovely views, and private terraces. It's kind of like your best friend's parent's beach house- but on St. Thomas. All the taxi drivers at the airport know where Miller Manor is located, and I think I got more respect, staying at such a local place. Love resident cats, Bob, Homer, and Phoebe! Lots of local nightlife around, and roosters crowing from 4am, so earplugs help, if you wish to sleep early or late. :-)

Talked to them on the phone to arrange our last stay close to the airport after bare boat sailing in BVI Drove up and my friends were asking why did you book here? Tell ya what ..the exterior will fool you. What a surprise when they opened the locked gate and we entered. The interior was spectacular. We stayed at the Best Western for our first night before getting our boat at Red Hook and this place was head and shoulders better than that!Rooms, view, prices, and the staff and semi permanent guest were so friendly it made us feel like family.Harry and Marge (owners)were so much fun and they are close to,or over 70 so they say but with their energy you would never believe that.Finn{the bar keep and and historian (also same age) is from Denmark i think and will always pour an honest drink. The view from the balconies are spectacular is worth mentioning again. We felt very safe and comfortable. The only downside is parking but Marge knows the tricks and will help you out.

See ya again with my wife next time.Re stock the Scotch.

Room Tip: Wish I could remember the room # I had on the second floor.Interior had an Italian flavor with brick...

We got in after midnight due to delayed flight on a Wednesday night. The hotel was clean and quite and owners were extremely nice. They even gave us complimentary beers after a long day of travels (which was more than I could ask for at that point). They advised us that there would be coffee at 8am and we told them that unfortunately we would be leaving by 7:30 to catch a ferry to Tortola for our sailing trip. At 7:00am we got a call to our room from the owners telling us there was a pot of coffee waiting for us. It was so nice of these people to go out of their way to make sure that we could sit down and enjoy amazing views of the island with a cup of coffee before our departure. After a nice conversation with them we walked down to the ferry dock which was an easy and short walk from the hotel.

Room Tip: This is a great place for overnight stay when traveling to Tortola.

We stayed there for 1 night at the end of our BVI's trip, we were flying out the next morning. This place was recommended by a friend who has stayed there many times, he said its not fancy but a good value, clean and friendly. Because we were only there for 1 night I chose it because of the price, everywhere else was pretty expensive. It's a small family run hotel, not a B&B, everyone was really friendly. We had to book a more expensive room because the cheapest ones were not available.

The room was a good size with a kitchenette, the bathroom was small but not tiny. Everything in the room was old, worn and tired. It smelled very musty. The sheets and comforter looked like they were bought at a garage sale. We had a balcony which really was a large rooftop balcony, we opened the door to the balcony to air out the place, it helped a bit. The room felt creepy to me. The kitchenette had tiny little bugs all over the counter that were alive. We weren't using that area so I tried to ignore it. It is a tropical island so I know you can never get rid of the bugs.

It is in a bad area too and we were told to be back before dark which was fine with us because we had to wake up early the next day but it is walking distance to the tourist area. Be advised, it's a steep walk uphill to get back.

If I'm not so cheap next time I will stay somewhere else.
The room could have been cleaner.
They knew what time our ferry was coming in so they could have aired out the room for us.
There appeared to be an area with newer more updated rooms, try to get one of those.

We're sorry that you were unhappy with your stay at the Miller Manor, and disappointed that you waited so long to tell us. If there is a problem, we want it to be addressed in a timely fashion so that you and future guests will have a positive experience.
Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback, and providing us with the opportunity to improve. You're right, the Manor is a very old building; but she has lots of history. We like to think of her as a lovely, eccentric old lady, filled with the quirks and flaws that come with increasing age, but interesting and fun to be around!
