“excellent for families”
Reviewed April 8, 2007

I was a bit nervous after reading the other reviews.

I had no facilities problems. the room AC worked fine, water pressure was ok... everything was as it should be (at least for me in my room)

Service issues. I learned that the service on St. Thomas in general is not up to mainland standards, it is just a different way of life down there. From the hotel front desk, to restaruants, to mcdonalds, the service is slow, and not outwardly friendly. We actually had better service at the front desk than other places on the island and the housekeaping and other staff was very nice and polite. room was missing bath towels and they were sent right up when we asked.

airplane noise - yes you are right across the street from teh runway. yes planes make noise when they take off, so it is not quiet all the time. there were no late night or early morning flights while i was there. i did not find the noise to be too intrusive because the planes are gone so quickly after takeoff and there was never a long line of planes reving up and waiting in line for takeoff, just single planes at a time.

Beach - beautiful. we rented a car and drove to other beaches. i did not find any that were spectacularly more impressive. teh water is perfectly clear, no waves, gentle slope into the water, nice soft sandy bottom. It was perfect for my 2 year old son. no crowds, unlike Magens bay, which was overwhelmed with cruise ship passengers. as an added bonus, the small park/playground approx 400m down the beach was my son's highlight. there is also a small child's water park there (not open year round), which cost only $1 for 30 minutes

Value - St thomas is very expenssive and i am a budget minded traveler. I cant bring myself to pay large amounts of money for a room that i am not going to spend much time in. I paid $179 a night for spring break season, and that was the best rate anywhere for a hotel right on the beach.

summary - if you are used to full service, expensive resorts, stay away. if you are looking for a great beach for families, at the best possible cost, this is the place for you, just dont go expecting the amenities and service of the higher end resorts.

For the price we paid, almost $300 per night, I would have hoped for a nicer hotel.
1. We were on the 3rd floor and there are no elevators,
2. The stairwell lights did not all work.
3. The staff was friendly but not overly helpful. While trying to get luggage thru a lobby door several staff walked past us and made no attempt to open or hold the door.
4. The bathroom has cracked or broken floor tile and the hot water knob in the shower just spins. It is almost impossible to turn on or off if you can get it on.
5. The grounds are nice but the pool closes at 5 or 6pm. Just when we're getting back in from touring.
6. The restaurant food was very good and well prepared but the service was exceptionally slow. 10 minutes after being seated we were still waiting for a server to order drinks. The floor of the restaurant could have been cleaner. Note this is a beach access restraunt but noticed paper, sand, etc on the floor both at dinner and at breakfast.

  • Liked — Beautiful view of Carribean water
  • Disliked — Bathrooms need to be remodeled, fixed tile floor, shower knobs that don't work

Having read many reviews of this hotel, we were aware of the fact that Best Western Emerald Beach is not elegant. But the beach is fabulous, the staff was friendly if somewhat confused. There appears to be a level of management missing. The level that is responsible for efficiency, and making profits.
The good news is that you can sit in the bar/restaurant as long as you like and nobody gives you any grief . If location is everything, this hotel has it made, although the proximity to the airport is pretty obvious as
767's roar off over your head during the day ( 'tho quiet at night).
There is good snorkling on the left end of the beach, by the rocks,
naturally. The physical plant is showing it's age. The missing level of management appears again as you try to check out and they try to charge you again for a room that was prepaid. I do not believe that this was malevolent, just lack of coordination due to that missing level of middle management. O.K. it's not the Ritz, but I'd go back ASAP.

We found a lot of mosquitos when we got into the hotel room, We called the front desk and a person came to spray, I found he had a long list( so many people called). After spray,it's looks better, but at night , mosquitos came back, we called front desk and the woman said: "It's the Caribbean."

I got married on this beach
it was truely an amazing experience. . .
we had the WHOLE beach all to ourselves for the whole day to enjoy . . . we even had a reception of hot dogs and hamburgers and everyone loved it
Family members flew in for the ceremony and stayed at this hotel and found it to be wonderful.
Only complaint I heard was that the TOWN shuts down all shops and things right at 5pm SHARP . .so other than that - I'm soo looking forward to going back and staying at this hotel and having the beach all to ourselves. . .hehehehe

We stayed in the Best Western Emerald for 6 nights. The hotel room was clean and had great view of the beach. It's nice to get the beach all to yourself while the other beaches are so crowded.
Airplanes took off often but the noise does'nt bother us at all. We were having so much fun swimming with the fishes.

Hotel staffs were not friendly at all. They just gave us the room key, and there is no other additional information. The supposed to be free continental breakfast, was charged $9.95-14.95 once we went in. So I have to go ask the front desk, why there is a charge. If your package is included with free breakfast, you'll have to ask the front desk, and they'll give you a free pass. If you don't ask, they'll charge you.

But overall, the room is very clean and it's highly recommended if you just love to go have a good swim and relax on the beach.

  • Liked — Great scenery, less crowded beach
  • Disliked — The hotel staff could be more interactive and informative.

Sadly, the Emerald Beach Resort is a depressing place to stay even if the beachfront location is outstanding. The view from our room was outstanding and we even adjusted to the frequent planes flying overhead from the airport just down the road. (Note: planes take off very frequently during the winter months if our one night stay on a Friday night in February was any indication. Other reviews suggested that there were only a very few flights but this may have been during low season.) The grounds and pool area are also quite nice but the hotel itself is not aging well.

What's not to like? The room was supposed to be non-smoking. Before we even opened the door, we could smell the cigarette smoke and a maid we encountered agreed that she could smell it through the closed door also. There were no other rooms available so we hunkered down. There was no screen door on the sliding glass door to the balcony so unless we wanted to risk letting the mosquitos have their way with us, there wasn't any means to properly air out the place. There were no apologies rendered at the front desk nor did they make any attempt to freshen the room with an air freshener or through some other means. We had one washcloth in the bathroom and only one coffee mug and although the Manager promised to send up another washcloth and coffee mug after we offered to bring it back up ourselves, neither ever arrived.

The room rate was $254 and in addtion to the hotel tax, there was a 10% service fee ($25.40) imposed that didn't result in getting any service. In addition, silly as it seems, there was a mandatory $1.00 per night charged for the room safe whether you used it or not. Huh???

When we checked in, we were never informed that the room rate included a complimentary continental buffet breakfast. At breakfast the person who seated us never inquired as to whether we were hotel guests and if so, that the buffet was included so we ordered the expanded buffet (included eggs and bacon) at $14.95 each. Bottom line, we would never have paid $30.00 for breakfast to get some eggs and bacon if the $9.95 continental buffet was included in the price of our room. Beyond that, the table we sat at was very sticky to the touch. A sticky table is not a clean table - for heaven's sake, get some good cleanser and scrub the tables down. We had the same problem in our room - the ice bucket was very sticky to the touch. Ugh!!!

We had just come from staying at a delightful B&B on St. John (Estate LIndholm) where we paid the same price for a room with a beautiful view, lovely tropical grounds, continental breakfast included and where both cleanliness and service were top notch. What a crash landing in paradise!

Further, no shuttle service to the airport included. And the taxi back into downtown was $8 per person one-way ( a 2 mile trip) and the airport which couldn't have been more than a quarter of a mile away was a $6 per person one way (we had two pieces of luggage so perhaps we were charged for those?)

There must be better places to stay one night on St. Thomas than this and since taxi fare did not appear to be dramatically reduced for even short distances, don't worry about staying somewhere closer to the downtown area even if you have an early flight the next morning.
