Emerald Beach Resort

Hotel staff let us pick our room for our week's stay in December 2004 and it was lovely. Best balcony and beach and wonderful open-air dining every day. There are only a few big airplanes going overhead.....mainly in the afternoon....and they are exciting to watch while you relax on the most beautiful beach. We liked the beach as much as Magen's Bay! The taxi costs are bad all over the island but we appreciated the free one-way ride to town every day provided by the hotel. We'd definitely go back!

The room was neat and clean and up to date. The food is very good and reasonable and wonderful views! The beach is the best! Two other restaurants are within walking distance and it is close to town so it keeps taxi fares low.

After a 2 day stay at this very low end hotel I would not recommend it to anyone. The rooms are akin to a Motel 6 in Des Moine, Iowa at best.

The beach was passable but then you must not mind the continual jet airplanes 100 yards away!

The worst part was the manager and staff..Surly, rude, and not hospitable.....Don't they train these people??

My husbands friend manages a Best Western in the mid-west and when he stayed there and complained the manager was truly obnoxious and rude on the phone...My last words..DON'T BOTHER..

Do not pay attention to any of the negative reviews!! My husband, two children and I just returned from a wonderful trip from Emerald Beach. My sister and her daughter were there also and had a great time. This hotel is on one of the most beautiful beaches on St. Thomas! It is a well-kept,clean beach that is not overly crowded. The hotel grounds keeper was always cleaning around the beach and pool area. Very nice pool! A bit chilly when you first get in, but always very clean. Nice waterfall into pool. The rooms are very nice and clean. Nothing fancy, but very nice and spacious. Good service from maids. The view from balcony can not be beat! We saw a beautiful sunset every night. The beach was awesome to swim and snorkel in. Very calm bay and powdery, white sand beach was great. The weddings that took place while we were there did not bother us. We were still able to swim and play on the beach while they were going on. The grounds around hotel are beautiful. Many tropical plants and flowers. The airport traffic did not bother us at all. It was actually neat to see the planes taking off and landing so close. The airport closes around 10:00 P.M.,so there were no planes taking off or landing until early the next morning. We rented a car which was nice since we planned to do some sightseeing. You could easily get by without renting a car since there are many taxis to take you into town. The food at the hotel is good. A little over-priced, but we soon learned that no matter where you go on the island it is not cheap to eat. The cheeseburgers for lunch are the best! Calamari is yummy. The free continental breakfast was good. Muffins. toast, fruit, cereal, coffee and juice. Don't miss the managers reception on Monday afternoon. We had free rum punch, hot wings, and fruit. The service was at times slow, but we have found that to be the case with most islands we have been to. It is "island time"- very relaxed and laid-back. A few of our favorite restaurants there at St. Thomas were "Bonnie's-by-the-Sea", "Hook,Line, and Sinker", and "the Greenhouse". You will not be disappointed if you stay at Emerald Beach. I know we definitely will go back there the next time we visit St. Thomas!!

We went there Thanksgiving week, and had we changed our plans based on the negative reviews (which we almost did), then we would have missed out on a great experience. The most accurate review for you is the Dec. 10, 2004 one - he outlines it very well. I want to add more though.
It is so near the airport that you should consider walking if you do not have too much luggage. We took a cab to the hotel, but it was a 30-40 second ride - no lie - and cost $10. Even though we were laden with 12 bottles of rum by week's end, we walked to the terminal. The jets do leave in the afternoon - so they are no real bother, and it was nice to watch the prop planes take off during the day.
The breakfast is a basic continental breakfast, and free. If you want other items - they are available for a charge. The service is a bit slow for lunch/dinner, but as I've found in my travels of the Caribbean - there is a thing called 'Island Time' - a less hectic pace than we are used to in the US, so go with the flow and enjoy your time away.
The food is decent, but we ate the fast foods - burgers and conch fritters and wings only. The Monday welcome rum punch party was very nice.
We had no issues with the staff - they seemed fine, friendly and helpful. If you treat them fine - they will do the same. We had many smiles from them.
The rooms were fine - I've traveled that area and the world extensively, and I was quite satisfied - quite standard size - plenty of room. The view of the bay from the balcony was beautiful, especially sunsets. The rooms were cleaned daily, linens fine, everything sanitary and everything worked.
The beach was nice, quiet, clean, and had plenty of chairs. A beautiful view of the bay. Water was nice, snorkeling just OK.
Safety was never an issue, as some people claim. The drinks were overpriced, as was the case anywhere on the island - except for Green House.
The lobby was small, but was very consistent with tropical hotels, and we had no problem with that, or taking our own luggage to our rooms, which is also a common practice for such hotels.
There are some covenient stores a short walk away.
As for other things: the shuttle to town only holds 7 people, so get there 15-20 min before. There are ferries to the other islands (we went to St. John and Tortola, BVI). They were nice, and easy to get to/from/around. Both USVI and BVI take the US $.
We ate dinner at Agave Terrace - good food, excellent view, but we enjoyed the happy hour at Green House in Charlotte Amalie much better. The best food and drinks we had while there! Cheap, 1/2 price drinks, cheap appetizers, good people watching by the water - I wish we had found that spot earlier in the week - we'd have been there everyday! I recommend conch fritters, wings, coconut shrimp, anything we got was great.
Forget the negative reviews, if you get a good deal, just keep in mind island time; that you can walk from the terminal to the hotel; the rooms, and especially the views, are nice; and check out the Green House. We enjoyed this place, and wouldn't have any problem going back.

Beware of check-out time. It is 12:00 p.m. and they charge 25.00/hour if you aren't out by then. There is nothing posted ANYWHERE! Since everything else was on "island time" we assumed it would be okay to stay until our pre-arranged airport transfer and we have two young children who wouldn't want to sit in the lobby for 2 hours!! The front desk was curt. I think this is their way to obtain extra income. We travel frequently and in the past the front desk assists in such manners (allowing us to stay an extra hour until departure to airport etc.) We also found a 3-4 inch cockroach behind our suitcase when we left.

December 30, 2004. Just returned from a week at Emerald Beach. The hotel is getting a bad rap from some of these reviews. Its not a posh , but if you want a pretty setting, nice ocean front rooms, good food, attentive staff and just the ease of rolling out of bed onto a gorgeous beach this hotel will work for you. When I go back to St. Thomas I am going back to Emrald Beach.
