Bluebeard's Castle Resort
Reviewed December 26, 2013

I really enjoyed my stay at BlueBeard's Castle. I had very little interaction with the staff while there, but the location was perfect jogging, and property overall curb appeal was very nice. The cost was even better than I expected. However, unfortunately when I tried to extend my stay, the rate was quite excessive. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to all my friends.

We were wonderfully surprised when we stayed at Blue Beards Castle on out vacation to St Thomas VI. After booking blindly through an travel website, we did not know what expect when we arrived, and we were very pleased with our choice. The staff was ultra friendly, the facilities were well maintained and beautiful. The onsite restaurants were all wonderful and priced comparable to the quality of food and services provided. I would definitely stay here again if I vacation in St Thomas again.

Room Tip: Most rooms have good views of the area.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay. Our room had a view of the St Thomas harbor where we watched the cruise ships come and go. The staff was friendly. The food good. We especially liked the large, open air restaurants and pool area, and friendly bar atmosphere at the end of a long day. Would have given 5 stars but rooms are dated as this is a historic hotel.

I've waited to do our review on the castle as I don't want to be a complete downer so I'll just state facts of our stay.

We were at the castle Dec 2-7, we had a studio in pirates pension and a 1 BR in villas 1. We own at another timeshare resort on St. Thomas (Bluebeard's Beach Club) but wanted a second trip this year so we traded through RCI into these two units. Each room had an $85 energy charge applied to it. We are pretty low maintenance travelers, as long as the room is clean we're happy.

The Resort-It sits on a hill overlooking town and the cruise ship docks and marina. The views are really nice and were great from both rooms. No matter what room you have, there will be stairs. The pension studio had like 42 stairs down to the room, the villas 1 room had maybe 12 to get from the parking lot to the building. The grounds are well kept but the roosters in the morning are annoying. You definitely want a car, no doubt, not even a question! The staff at the resort are friendly once you get there, don't try to call before hand though, I was hung up on 3 times trying to confirm our reservations. The pool is pretty much useless, it's very deep so if you have small kids or are uncomfortable in deeper water it's no good to you. We only ate at the resort once, at the pool bar and it was OK. the other restaurants were pricey and we know the island so we went elsewhere. Be prepared for your room to not be ready at check in time. The studio was ready, the 1 BR was not, not a big deal for us as we had already been on island for 3 days so we just went out to dinner and came back later, but if you just land, go to the grocery and find out you're rooms not ready till later you will be less than thrilled!

Pirates Pension room. Again, lots of stairs if you end up on the lowest floor. the layout was nice, the views were great and the room was clean. No issues in this room. They also have a washer/dryer in the unit which is a plus. Also good water pressure which is uncommon on-island.

Villas 1 room. The room was clean. Water pressure was good. The view was nice. That was about all I could say it had going for it. The room was infested with ants, super tiny no-seeum sized ants. Again, we know there's bugs on island and I read reviews thinking they were over reacting. They weren't. I was flicking ants off my toothbrush. it was terrible. The living room AC unit smelled like when you leave clothes in the washer overnight. It was awful, again I've read reviews that complained about the musty smell thinking "you're in the islands, duh" well, they were right, it was the most retched moldy smell I've ever had in a hotel room. We had maintenance come spray the kitchen and fix the kitchen light, but the ants were everywhere, in my purse in the bedroom not anywhere near water, everything had to go in the fridge, couldn't leave a glass of water on the bed side table or it would be full of ants. just gross. Both toilets in the room ran the whole time we were there, considering the high cost of water on-island it surprised us that when they repaired the toilets they just cut the chains short so the flapper never closes and the water just runs and runs. Also, these units do NOT have a washer and dryer in the unit. There are coin-op machines in the building that costs 2.50/load and a quarter for 10 in the dryer. These should be free since the other units all have them.

Overall. We won't stay here again, we'll stay at our Beach club or trade into the Elysian, or even Magens Point before staying here again, or just rent a room for the week. Not being on the beach is a big let down if you're used to being steps from the water, the benefits of the castle are definitely the views and the water pressure, but it doesn't outweigh the pool/room/steps issues.

If you're going to the island and want to stay "on resort" don't stay here, you'll be disappointed, however if you're looking for a room to call home base and are comfortable going out each day you should be OK, just try to get in one of the higher floor rooms or the pension rooms, and if you're room is funky don't wait thinking you'll just deal with it, by day 5 you'll be less than pleased.

We really wanted to like the Castle and were considering picking up a timeshare unit here but now that we've stayed here we will look elsewhere to own.

Room Tip: Pirates Pension have great views. All rooms have stairs.

We returned a couple of weeks ago from the Castle and really enjoyed ourselves. The facility has really improved over the last few years under the new management. The Staff was very helpful. Breakfast at the Pool Bar was great and the Restaurants onsight are excellent. Only complaint I could have had was they let it rain one day we were there and my Wife made me go shopping!

Was little concerned due to some of reviews. The room was very clean and nice. The view was beyond amazing. The only surprise was the energy daily charge. But I could have over looked this $6 per day per person. Had dinner at bar is was great with amazing view also.
