Owner description: Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

The 99 steps was something cool to take in as part of the local history but it was truly nothing more than anywhere else you would find steps on history.
What did make it worthwhile were the stops along the way that told of local history and in particular the history and statues of various notorious pirates.

We walked up the 99 steps to see the view and wanted to do something "local" while we were in town. The view was nice and walking up the steps was not bad at all. If you are there, you might as well do it!

My wife & I visited the 99 steps in St Thomas. These are very difficult hike up old steps. The view of the city is worth it. Blackbeards castle is at the top. Which was closed when we were there. Lots of steps all over the city. Bring water.

It's a nice compliment to this historical landmark to actually have the memories of using these steps to go to and from our hotel (Green Iguana). Yes, we did the 99 steps...numerous times.

99 steps is in the heart of Charlotte Amalie. The view from the top looks over the city. It is a bit of a hike but worth it.
