Owner description: Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

“WILD ORCHIDS AMONGST HISTORIC GEMS”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

what a nice way to see the historic district! confused as to why all the attractions and restaurants would be closed on saturdays and sundays - we heard they open only for the disgorging of cruise ships.... VERY WORTH EVERY STEP!

“What a hike, what a view!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

We found the 99 Steps easily since we passed it a few times looking for parking in downtown Charlotte Amalie. It's right around the corner from the busy Dronningens Gade/Main Street area. All along the steps there are local flora growing and the flowers were all so beautiful. The view from the top is amazing, too, with a small lookout point near a taxi stand. The steps are spaced wide so you'll be tired after going up and down. Also Blackbeard's Castle is just a bit up the hill from the top of the 99 Steps.

“Historic site”

The steps are pretty cool because you get to see a part of the island's history. It doesn't take very London and leads you to Blackbeards castle.

“Nice attraction, lasts about 10 minutes.”

It was a little tough to find, but it's on a Charlotte Amalie downtown map that you can pick up. It's not really an activity, but it's neat to see. If you drive down the Main Street (street parallel to Veterans Drive that runs along the waterfront) you will see a light yellow post office and it's behind that and up a hill with cars parked along the side. My husband and I went on the weekend so there were places to park around (you don't need much time) and Blackbeard's Castle was closed so there weren't many people there anyway. It had some nice flowers and the view was nice, but you can see nice views from driving up the mountain as well.

“Quaint village steps”

Pleasant but steep stairs through historic attractions take visitors to unparallelled views from Blackbeard's Castle.
