Owner description: Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

Get ready for a climb, it is actually 103 steps, take your time, you will pass the Governor's Mansion and once you get to the top, at Bluebeard's Castle the view is amazing, you can see out into the harbor and understand why he wanted his castle there, to see anything and everything that was coming into the harbor. The bluest sky, tourquise water, well worth the climb and you have a refreshing drink at the Rum Company.

These steps are on the way to Blackbeard's Castle. It's really not as bad as it's sounds. The stairs are at a nice height and wide enough for 2 people side by side

We walked the steps Roundtrip twice a day. Now I know why the locals walk the steps slowly. What beautiful scenery. You will also meet Freeman at the top of the steps.

Apparently, the people planning the city originally planned to put a road (for horses and buggies) where the 99 steps are (they were planning this from overseas, without having looked at the terrain). Happily, we are left with 99 steps instead of just another street!

99 steps is marketed as the one thing you really muset see in Charlotte Amalie. Not very much to see, really, but the stairs lead to e.g. Haagensen's hus, one of the major attractions for Scandinavians. You have to pay to walk parts of the steps.
