Owner description: Step streets used by the residents of Charlotte Amalie, these historical 99 steps (the actual count is 103) were built from the ballast bricks of the tall ships coming from the old world, which would then return to Europe loaded with products from the islands.

“Great to See”
Reviewed September 2, 2010

Being that Blackbeard's Castle was closed, so was everything else. But we did walk down and back up the steps just to say we did it. The flowers are very pretty and it did have great views , but just make sure Blackbeard's Castle is open if you want the full effect! (which we didn't get), but still worth doing.

“99 steps history”
Reviewed November 25, 2009

What I liked most about the 99 steps is the history. Sailing ships coming to St. Thomas usually traveled empty. For better sailing, bricks were loaded into the hulls for ballast. Upon arriving at St. Thomas the ballast bricks were removed. What to do with all of the bricks? Build walls and stairs. We followed the "yellow brick road" from the top of the steps to the bottom. Along the way, there was a tour of the Haagensen house down to the Caribbean World Amber Museum (and a statue in the courtyard that looked alot like pirate Jack Sparrow!). The steps end at the shopping area.

“99 Steps on our Walking Tour”
Reviewed June 4, 2009

We very much enjoyed the surrounding area of the 99 steps. And there is a lot of beautiful flowers going up/down the steps. We took a walking tour http://www.frommers.com/destinations/stthomasusvi/0097010008.html (we went backwards though, because we came from the ferry station) which lead us to the 99 steps and many other sights. There are beautiful views from the top of the stairs. (Someone told us you're high up enough to see Puerto Rico?)

P.S. - I'm not in super-great physical condition, but this was no problem!! If you are worried about going up 99 steps, just take breaks along the way and admire the view and flowers.

“Beautiful views”
Reviewed May 3, 2009

While visiting St. Thomas we were looking for something to do that was close to our room and interesting at the same time. Upon asking some locals about the 99 steps we soon found our way there. The steps are very pretty, not steep, but stairs none the less. All the views were spectacular, with fragrant flowers lining the way. If you can handle climbing stairs it is worth the view at the top.
