“pretty awful...”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

We arrived to the hotel in the morning and they did not have our rooms ready since their check in time was later. They told us our rooms would be ready by 2:30pm but in fact, they were not ready until 4pm (when they had their regular check in).

While we were waiting for our rooms, they suggested we eat at their Sunset Grille restaurant. After we were seated, it took over 20 minutes for the waitress to come over and ask us what we would like to drink. Not even if we were ready to order. The drinks never came. The waitress comes back 10 minutes later and then asks for our food order. 45 minutes later (75 minutes after we have been seated) our food finally comes out. We have still yet to receive our drinks. We glanced at the tables around us and people who came after us have already gotten their food and left. We complained to our waitress, and she said it’s out of her control and we should complain to the chef. Are we supposed to go into the kitchen and complain to the chef? It was totally uncalled for.

We finally get to our rooms and were satisfied by the size and appearance inside. However, the hallway of our rooms had about 4-5 cots just propped up again the side. The cleaning crew’s cart was also just sitting in the middle of the hallway. It was like this for 3 out of the 5 nights we stayed. The cleaning crew’s work left a lot to be desired. They did not clean the balconies at all during our entire stay. They also did not change our sheets daily nor did they pick up a towel that we had left on the floor. Also, they cleaned the rooms very late in the day. We came back to the room after lunch and the room still had not been cleaned.

Another issue we had was being able to get beach towels. Many times when we went to the station to get them, they had run out. We were leaving for an excision and needed them ASAP that they made us go to the spa and request some from there. The towels were a commodity and it should not be that way at a beach resort hotel.

The "CAT" catamaran snorkeling turtle cove excursion was close to awful. The main attraction was to be able to see turtles at the turtle cove. The crew members on the boat even said we would 100% see turtles on our snorkel. We did not see a single one. The crew on the boat never gave us snorkels or fins after asking multiple times. The trip was advertised to have snacks including hummus, cheese, and crackers, yet all they had was fruit and veggies without hummus, cheese or sauce. They claimed we could "order any drink" you wanted, but they only had beer and a rum punch as options. They also yelled at us to keep our original cups even when we were never given an original cup to begin with.

There were dead roaches and mosquitoes all over the resort. It made it feel it lacked of cleanliness.

The service overall at the resort was just disgustingly poor. When we checked in, we were told we received a gift of a few items to choose from. We had asked for beer and chips and were told it would be in the room shortly. We did not receive these gift until 3 days later after having to complain a few times. And when they finally did bring it up, they only gave it to one room. That created the need for us to make another call. It was like pulling teeth to get anything. The concierge was not well versed on the excursions and would defer us to the adventure desk. The adventure desk gave faulty information regarding the trips as well. Although, we did greatly enjoy our St John excursion trip, however that had nothing to do with the resort.

Room Tip: The rooms with balconies are nice but they are almost all obstructed even when you ask for non obstr...

I had a great time at the marriott a infinity pool. The upgrades they have done look amazing!

They also now offer lots of activities for you while you are there. My wife loved the yoga classes with Trisha who has been there since last time we came. She didn't miss one! I enjoyed the swimming fitness class they have. We like the new restaurants on sight too! Windows in the harbor was great! We also liked Havana blue!

All in all a great stay!

We (2 adults, 2 kids) had an awesome week at the Frenchman's Reef during the busiest time, 12/28-1/4. A huge shout out to Robert Fulcher, the Front Desk Manager who was fabulous to us a few weeks before our trip. After reading unsavory reviews about the Harbor Wing, we upgraded further to the Royal Suite which is in the main hotel on the 8th floor. So glad we did!! Two-story view is unreal of Charlotte Amalie, especially on nights with cruise ship traffic. Spectacular views, and kids loved it too. Robert really helped us with the logistics of the switch and was very quick on email. When we checked in, he was so great by personally taking us to our room and showing us the room amenities and benefits. Do yourself a favor if you have kids - get the Royal Suite. So convenient to everything in the hotel, without having to walk from another wing!

Property and staff: I had read reviews that bashed the customer service and attitudes of the staff here. NEVER experienced this! Staff was extremely friendly to my husband and I and the kids. Loved JUDY in Aqua Terra. We also, did NOT have anyone hound us regarding timeshare presentations.
Pools and beach are awesome! Go to the Cove pool (property next door with free shuttle) if you have kids. Very nice pool with cute water slide and rock wall off beach (and trampoline). Chairs are a bit of an issue at main pool and Morningstar beach. Who wants to wake up early to reserve a beach chair on vacation? This may have only been a problem this past week - not sure. Get towels early, as they run out by midday and many people were complaining. Not many kids activities at main hotel, which is really our main complaint, especially since the kids club is closed for now and this is a family resort. They could have easily had maybe a movie night for kids? Just a thought. Or some organized pool activities.
Restaurants: Food is expensive but expected. Aqua Terra GREAT for breakfast. Eat big at this buffet. It is expensive ($80 for the 4 of us) but very plentiful. Again, Judy is awesome and could not have been friendlier to us! I hope she likes her rainbow loom bracelet. Don't eat dinner here. Cold and lacking at the dinner buffet.
Go to Havana Blue if you can for a romantic night. Expensive, but awesome food and service (loved the mojo skirt steak). 1/2 price mojitos from 5:30-7pm.
Coco Joes - good for breakfast (off the menu), and dinner. Seafood pasta is reasonable and big enough for two to split.
Go to the hotel market for morning coffee and bagels if you don't feel like the big buffet and want something quick. Tip: if you have kids, pack snacks or send via USPS to hotel before your trip (at least two weeks before). Can save $$ this way especially if your kids only like certain things (peanut butter, for example).

Island: Transportation is very expensive. $10 per person in a taxi no matter where you go. We did bite the bullet a few times. Went to Secret Harbor beach - great snorkeling there and restaurant on site (great Mahi tacos). Can rent snorkel gear and chairs there. Very pretty.
Did take water taxi shopping - love our new 'USVI' watches. Only at Cardow. Mention the Marriott for a discount. Great lunch at Fat Turtle - 10 minute walk to Yacht Haven Grande. Gotta mention Linea at the LV store! Finally got one!!
The one thing that the island needs is an ice cream shop!! None to be had.

Love St. John!! Try and go and rent a car for day. Can rent from Delberts or Conrads - 1 block from Ferry. Cheaper than taxi especially for 4 people. Lime Inn - great for dinner. 1/2 price drinks from 3-6pm. Go see Linda at Pink Papaya gift shop next door. She is awesome! If you can - drive to Coral Bay. Skinny legs is a must and snorkeling at Salt Pond or Lameshur (big puddles are fine to drive through, and don't worry about dirt road if you have a jeep). Never went to Trunk Bay - too touristy and only beach that you have to pay for. Go to Francis - turtles, free, and same water as Trunk. Can get sandwiches and snacks at Deli Grotto at Mongoose Jct.

Going back to St. John in May - can't wait. Adults only this time!!!! Yeah!

Room Tip: Get the Royal Suite if you have kids!

When we arrived at the hotel, they didn't have our two rooms together and it took about 30 - 45 minutes to check in and get two rooms a floor apart.

When we went to the "concierge" to get information of things to do, we weren't really told what we needed to get around the island and see things. They should have advised us to rent a car and that the cheapest taxi into town was $6 per person each way (we had seven people). The cost to cross the island was more on the line of $10 - $11 per person each way. Rather, they tried to book us on some excursions saying that "space was limited" but they could get us in and get us a "deal" if we looked at the time shares. EVERYONE WAS TRYING TO SELL THE TIME SHARES.

We ended up not exploring the island as much because of the cost of taxis.

The food on the resort was delicious, but EXPENSIVE compared to what you can get in town. Problem is the trade off of the taxis makes it cheaper. A good idea is the deli counter in the gift shop for sandwiches. MUCH CHEAPER.

If you go into town, have the cab driver stop at the grocery store for cheap snacks and rum. At those prices they will wait for you. Also, if you get their card for the return trip, you can sometimes negotiate a cheaper price.

The rooms had space, but the beds were small. They could easily add queen beds to the rooms instead of two double beds.

Otherwise, the beaches were nice (you can snorkel off the beach at the timeshares), the pools were convenient and the views were amazing.

Definitely take the catamaran trip to Buck Island The VICAT.COM.

You can also take the ferry into town. They charge less for kids, so there is a small savings, but a fun experience.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the harbor (not in the main hotel) and the views were limited

We had a terrific experience at the Frenchman’s Reef Marriott hotels in St. Thomas this past December. We were treated like we were the most important people on the planet by everyone. This includes Arun Kumar, the hotel manager, Juan Silva the front office manager and everyone down to the people who cleaned our rooms, brought us extra towels, laundry bags, etc.
The hotel is beautiful; the infinity pools looked out over the bay; it’s a very picturesque setting and the beach, while not overly long (like the beach in the Grand Cayman or Jamaica’s Negril area), was very pretty. My wife particularly loved that there were real waves that you could ride, something you don’t often get in the Caribbean. There were plenty of umbrellas and if you came out to the beach too late, the Marriott staff would set one up for you.
In all, staffers at the Marriott took very good care of us throughout our vacation. As a matter fact, when my daughter lost her mosquito spray, Robert Fulcher at the front desk walked her into the shop and gave her another one…on the house…very nice.
Activities: We took a wave runner tour all around the island. You can rent them on the far end of the beach. Glen took us out and showed us ruins and gave us some history of the islands. We went to town, to Honeymoon Beach, and he showed us Joe Biden’s house too. We did the 1 hour tour…it wasn’t cheap $320 for two wave runners (each had two seats) plus tip…but it was worth it.
We also rented a car (beware: they drive on the left side of the road there) and took it on a ferry to St. John’s. From there we drove about 10 or 15 minutes to Trunk Bay and snorkeled. The water is very calm and clear there and they have a path you can follow with information carved into stones on the ocean floor.
We also went into town using a Water Taxi that picks you up from the hotel dock…it was also about a 15 minute ride each way with very entertaining drivers. They provide a lot of good information on places to eat (Jen’s Restaurant was small but very good and we were served by Charlene who hails from New Jersey…near Six Flagg’s Great Adventure..she was very cool!) Charlene recommended a good place to get a watch for my wife just around the corner, and she was right. We also got my son a chain and my daughter a good pair of sun glasses. Then my wife and daughter bargained for several 4 bags and purses and a couple of ankle bracelets at the outdoor market. Everyone had a lot of fun.
One place that we ate at was the Room with a View at Bluebeard’s Castle…about 10 minutes from the hotel. Sue was our server (she is originally from the mid-west..Minnesota I think) and she was outstanding. The food was great…the French Onion Soup was terrific and we had various chicken and steak dishes that everyone enjoyed.
The only negative was that we there was so much more to do than we actually did…so we’ll probably come back again next December and take greater advantage of more of what the island offers. This includes taking a tour of nearby islands by boat as well as other activities.
Overall, our St. Thomas vacation was a trip to remember and we can’t say enough about the outstanding service we received at the Marriott. We highly recommend this hotel.

We just returned from a 6 day trip to St. Thomas and we stayed at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef (MFR).

The hotel location was fantastic and from what we learned the MFR is one of the nicer hotels on the Island. The location, pools, beach were absolutely fantastic.

The hotel buildings and rooms themselves looks a bit old and quite honestly, seem like they are run on a tight budget (at $350+ per night seems odd). This comment ranges from the fact that there are NO elevators, decaying concrete around the hot tubs, etc...

The rooms were clean and pretty well kept. Towels seemed to be a high commodity. I have read that, in general, the staff who live on the island are not really appreciative and warm in their reception of tourists. We saw this a number of times.

A note to travelers:
This resort has A LOT of staircases. If you cannot handle long walks and stairs to get where you are going - reconsider.

A few notes to management:
1. When you send a confirmation email just prior to the trip, expect some of us might reply. I did and received a auto reply back stating the person was away for the next week.

2. Lighten up on the towel policy. I understand it is an expense, but at almost $400 per night, if I want three towels, I shouldn't have to feel like a criminal being questioned as to why.

3. Look around your hotel - there are many families there. Set up a New Year's eve party that welcomes people under 21. Your main (only) party was for 21 and older. That's why all 16 of us did not go.

Room Tip: If you stay in the main building, ask to be placed away from the catering rooms, they are loud throu...

Thank you for your comments especially for your wonderful mentions of our location, pools, beach and cleanliness. The suggestions provided are also welcome. I am reviewing these with our leadership team. Specifically, we are re-structuring our towel policy and so appreciate you pointing that out. New Year’s Eve naturally is a late evening celebration, but your suggestion will be strongly considered. We are sorry we were unable to accommodate your younger family members. Based on your overall satisfaction though, we hope that another holiday will bring you back to Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort. Please call ahead so we can welcome you as a returning family!
