“Our Experience on The Cat - Snorkeling & Dinner Sails”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

My wife and I had two wonderful experiences on The Cat, which departs from the Marriott.

We did the 10/19 afternoon snorkel sail with Cpt Joe, Sydney, and Stephanie. Also did the 10/21 dinner sail with Cpt Ryan, Landon, and Heath. The atmosphere on both sails was very fun and relaxing. These two events were the highlights of our vacation!

We plan to return to St. Thomas sometime next year, and will be sure to book these experiences at the hotel adventure center again!

Just got back from staying at this hotel / resort. Let me start off by thanking the following staff for their professionalism Sara the front end manager Joe the restaurant /bar manager Rohan the night front manager and Natasha the security officer . My significant other booked this trip as birthday gift to me so I looked forward to going and enjoying this trip. Had to wait told rooms were not ready. Sara gave us a buzzer to alert us when room became ready .The first place we were assigned to was rundown but the room had a view of the bay and it decent . Second night of stay had to move room got invaded by cockroaches while we were eating dinner. Needless to say dinner was ruined. Front manager moved us to the main building lost view but room was decent. On the third day decided to have lunch at the Sunset grill basically empty only 2 other tables occupied when we arrived made our orders and proceeded to wait while we waited the restaurant became busy with other occupants . Soon people Caucasian who arrived after us were being served this went on for over half hour. So I start timing the tables from the taking of the orders to deliver of their food 7 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile the server who had taken our order kept making excuses on why our food was not being delivered . After more than 35 minutes it was very clear what was taking place. They were feeding the Caucasian guests first while we were made to wait .At that point I had enough of this disgusting behavior being displayed and left the restaurant I went to the front desk I was very upset that this type of treatment of minority guest was going on in this hotel . Joe the restaurant manager was contacted he came by and listened apologized for his staff behavior invited us back for a do over which we accepted . Later did a little investigation it appears this type of behavior towards minorities is a common behavior among some of the hotel staff second example said good morning to the housekeeper outside my room she grunted like a pig instead of responding . So it appears this type of racist behavior continues to go unchecked by upper management sad but true.My trip was ruined cannot come away from this stay warm and fuzzy as I have had at other Marriott resorts . Ms Joyce I have also noticedd in reading the reviews that you respond to positive reviews right away but negative reviews very slowly or not at all what gives. Should you not be responding in a timely manner to the negative reviews as well or negative experience not worth responding to.

Room Tip: Stay in main building it more updated and clean

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry your experience at our resort was not an overall happy one. Our leadership team takes all the comments in reviews seriously and occasionally it does take time for us to investigate. Thank you for your understanding. Our goal is for every guest to leave the resort refreshed, rejuvenated and fulfilled. When we hear this did not happen, we get to work on discovering the areas we fell short in and how we can improve. This, we take for the direction of our efforts. Regarding your stay in particular, please refer to my response to the other review on October 19th which details the same experience. We are strongly committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment for our international community of guests and employees which includes a no tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior. On a positive note, thank you again for your compliments of Sarah, Joe, Rohan and Natasha.

Spent a week in October 2013 which was a trip for my best friend. The view is breath taking as it is located on a cliff. The rooms had a balcony that was wonderful to sit on in the morning having coffee and watching the day begin. The pools are located in area's where the view is spectacular. We found all the staff very accommodating and supplied items when requested. My friend was using a cane at the time, and the shuttle service assisted in helping her in and out of the vehicle, also drove us very close to restaurants so she would not have to walk a long distance. The room was very comfortable, bedding high quality, had a small refrigerator and a safe to secure items while at the beach etc. The food was excellent at all the restraunts on the premises.

My wife and I were here for our 25th anniversary trip. We had never been to St. Thomas and can't wait to go back. The U.S.V.I are a beautiful vacation spot. The hotel was updated within the last couple years and it was very nice. The views from our room, the pool and balcony Rum bar were spectacular. The room was clean and well appointed. The restaurants have a good variety of food and we did not have a bad meal while there.
What really set this place apart for us was the staff. We were there for 5 days and got to know severally of them quite well. We ate most of our meals at the Sunset Grill bar. We were lucky enough to have the best serve us. Fran from Philly, Brian from Texas (via Georgia), Justin from W. Virginia were the best at keeping us from going thirsty or hungry! Deirdre and Heather at the pool bar worked very hard to make sure no one in a lounge chair waited long for cold drink. Ted, one of the food & beverage managers, was a very funny guy and made sure everyone was having fun. Can't wait to get back!

Just finished a 4 night night stay at the Morning Star Beach property. Beautiful beach location and the sister property (Frenchman's Reef) has great views of the harbor and Charlotte Amalie. However, what you see on the website does not match the on property experience. Both hotels are older and show significant signs of wear and tear. The rooms appear to be recently redone but the AC unit was ridiculously loud, the shower heads have low pressure and the tubs wouldn't drain with the shower on. There are signs of rust and decay everywhere, the upper infinity pool is missing tiles and badly needs a refinished bottom. The hotel also lacks a concierge lounge for Platinum members, a huge minus. Spoke with several employees regarding the proper issues, they mentioned they are aware of it but there's not much they can do. Not sure if Marriott is funneling those repair funds into their new timeshare next door or if they just don't care as they are still the biggest property on the island.

We stayed in October 2013 for business and brought our toddler daughter along and extended our stay for family time. The hotel is beautiful built onto the cliff, tennis courts, ferry boat service for a small fee, good restaurants, pools with amazing views, friendly helpful staff and a decent beach. The rooms are pretty standard, clean and adequate, nothing stood out. I will say they provide bath and body works products which was a pleasant surprise.
Unfortunately there was a ton of work being done. They attempted not be too disruptive however while walking around with a toddler you realize how annoying the work can be. The Adventure staff that runs the ferry was extremely helpful. The ferry runs every hour and we just missed it. They called the boat back to pick us up. Amazing crew!!!!
If you're considering a wedding on the beach consider hiring a wedding planner. We witnessed 2 weddings on the beach and beach goers were allowed to walk through, beach chairs 3 feet from the wedding. As someone who recently got married in the Caribbean I found myself cringing.
Overall the experience was very positive, with a little tweaking this could be a must stay while in St. Thomas.

Room Tip: All inclusive option is available, get a room away from construction.

Went to Frenchman's Reef to celebrate a milestone birthday last January (2013) on a girls' long weekend with my mother, a friend and her mother. When we arrived, the rooms that we reserved in one area were not ready and only one was actually going to be available in the part of the resort we had chosen. When they finally sorted that out - so that on the second night we could stay in the same building (after over an hour of exaperating debate and the very opposite of high quality customer service) we were given a credit toward breakfasts, but little in the way of an apology. There were a number of other guests standing around who commented on having had the same experience. Clearly there is some overbooking going on. The resort is dated -- it needs major rebeautification. The DJ by the pool is ridiculously loud and obnoxious - really, if we had wanted spring break, we could have gone to Daytona and the spa pool is not far enough away from the noise. The staff in the lobby were not terribly knowledgeable about taxis, activities or restaurants and we were definitely steered wrong on more than one occasion regarding food quality and ambiance for dinner. The only thing that can unequivocally be said is that the beach and view is beautiful!! Everything else was just overpriced - not nearly enough in the way of resort quality (service or amenities) for the money and we will not be going back.

Thank you for the feedback. We are sorry to hear your experience was not all you hoped it would be. January is our high season here on the island and rooms do book up in advance. That being said, we make every effort to anticipate and accommodate room assignment requests and carefully manage our occupancy levels. For winter stays, the best advice is to make your reservation as early as possible. Before your next visit, please feel free to reach out to me at the hotel (and reference this review) so that our leadership team can assist you. We have been steadily improving guest experience in every area and would love another chance to show you the level of service we are known for! Thanks again.
