“Frenchman's Reef is Wonderful!! Don't believe bad reviews.”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Stayed at Frenchman's beginning Oct. 9th, 2013. The Frenchman's Reef is a beautiful hotel, the grounds of the property are clean and neatly maintained, the rooms were clean and it is definitely worth it to spring for an ocean view!! The food and drink prices were reasonable and what you would expect to pay at resort on an island. Also, if possible, please visit the spa!! The staff is very nice and accommodating (especially Alexia). The massage and body scrub were so relaxing. The spa also has it's own pool and a wonderful sauna! Also, I loved the infinity pool/bar!! I will be back!!

Room Tip: One tip: if you want a little more action then stay at the Frenchman's Reef but if you want to s...

We spent 4 nights last week at the Morningstar Resort. After we asked, we were able to upgrade from garden view to Ocean View since we are gold members. Overall, it was a perfect combination with the ocean just outside our room and the Reef up high on the cliff with the beautiful infinity pool and health club. The room was a bit dated and rough around the edges and the air conditioner was super loud, but worth it for the location. Ate at Coco Joes and Sunset Grille-both were very good. For our $35 a day resort fee, we got free internet, 5 bottles of water a day(very nice), towels, chairs and non-motorized water toys. Most employees were more than happy to help. Only small complaint, was that we came home one night and found a tray with an avocado stuffed with tuna(?) salad with a couple bags of chips, no note. It was 9pm. I called and they didn't know, but someone called back. It was because we were celebrating our 30th anniversary. Well, that is nice, but it would have been better to know that it was coming so we could eat it. Who knows how many hours it sat there. We left at 4. The person on the phone told me "You don't have to eat it if you don't want to." Bit of an attitude. Kind of defeats the purpose, after we already had dinner. Overall, we would stay again. It was a perfect trip.

Room Tip: Ocean front, 2nd or 3rd floor to get breeze. First floor garden view gets the employees cutting tree...

We stayed four nights at the Frenchman's Reef Hotel and had an enjoyable stay. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly, and the rooms are newly renovated. There are three swimming pools. We walked to the beach pool everyday. You can also take a shuttle. I would just tell people to be aware when they check in, to be sure to bring some cool clothes or bathing suit to change into if your room is not ready. We got to the hotel at 1:30 PM ..check in is at 4:00 PM...our room was ready at 4:20 PM. We did not change for the beach (our own decision) so we sat in the lobby and walked around the property, had lunch, etc. The lobby is NOT air conditioned and it was uncomfortable. Not the hotel's fault, however, I will prepare for this on our next trip. The food on property is excellent. We ate lunch everyday at Coco Joe's on the beach, the mahi mahi sandwich was the best ever! Also, the last night we went to Happy Hour on property at Havana Blue (on the beach and easiest to take the shuttle). My one regret is that we did not go EVERY night! It is a beautiful restaurant with a great staff. Lindsey the bartender was friendly and gave us suggestions. I absolutely loved this restaurant! It is on the beach, on the second floor overlooking the sea. You can hear the waves crashing as you dine! Overall a wonderful experience!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the cliff has nice breezes. A room overlooking Charlotte Amalie has a beautiful...

Marriott has done a great job renovating and caring for this amazing old hotel. They keep spending money to upgrade and maintain the property, and it shows. The views are simply the best on the island, and the staff was polite and very helpful. The restaurants and bars were plentful, although a little pricey. There are several beach bars, pool bars, and restaurants to choose from. For a 5-7 night stay, you'll have plenty to choose from without repeating. There is a nice activities calendar, but the buffet we wanted to attend was scheduled on Sunday night. Go figure. We would definitely stay here again, and look forward to our next trip!

Room Tip: If you want a room with a bay view, ask for a room on a high floor. The lower floors overlook the ro...

Thank you for your generous review! Although we completed the major renovation of Frenchman’s Reef at the end of 2011, you are correct that we continue to beautify our property. We also just finished updating a majority of the rooms at Morning Star Beach Resort. Your warm acknowledgements of our work is greatly appreciated. We’re glad we had the opportunity to welcome you and look forward to welcoming you back! Call ahead so we will know you are a returning guest!

I am a Marriott Gold elite member, which allows free breakfast and wifi as well as early check in and check out in most U.S. hotels. This hotel, however, offered no such privileges as it is a "resort." Everyone must be a $35 "resort fee" each day, which includes wifi (which was not very good) and snorkel gear.

The breakfast is extra, and costs $24 per person. Note that the food is not very good here (or anywhere in the U.S. Virgin Islands), especially compared to other Marriott resorts around the world, such as Thailand.

The hotel is actually combined into two separate hotels, 1) The Frenchmans's Reef and 2) Morningstar Resort. Frenchman's Reef is the newer, remodeled hotel with many rooms. Morningstar is the older, two story room near the beach. I was not told before I booked which one I would be put in. However, because the Frenchman's Reef had a wedding with 200 guests, I was put in the Morningstar Resort.

The Morningstar Resort is old and dated, and while it is on the beach (which is beautiful), the entire trip felt like I was being pushed into second class facilities, being nickeled and dimed and my Marriott Gold elite status meant nothing.

Finally, every time you go to the information desk, the person will try to sell you on the Marriott Vacation Club, which is a 90 minute presentation to get a $100 resort credit where they attempt to sell you on buying more stuff from them. Since the information desk employee changes every 5 hours, I was asked at least 4 times by 4 separate information desk people if I wanted to join the club.

Marriott is an excellent hotel chain, and I will continue to use them. However, having traveled to other resorts around the world with white sand and beaches (such as Phuket or Bali) this resort is nothing special for the price.

On our end, we will certainly work with the staff on ways to be more proactive and compassionate with each guest’s needs, preferences and member status. Again, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience during your stay. My family stayed at the Frenchman's Reef the last week of September. We arrived early and were told we could have a room immediately, but that we could wait for an upgrade on our basic room because of our marriott status. I chose to wait, and we were given a room that took my breath away. We truly enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the hotel and the amenities down at the Morningstar Beach. I hope that I am able to return again soon to enjoy the superior service and amenities!

We stayed here 10/3/2013-10/10/2013. Our room was in the tower with a view of the harbor. While an ocean view would have been even better, we really enjoyed sitting on our balcony and watching the boats/ships come and go all day and night. The view of the downtown area at night is also quite amazing with all of the lights on the mountainside. The room itself was very nice-not spectacular. There was lots of floor space and closet space. It was great having a refrigerator in the room so that we could go get some snacks, drinks and sandwiches at Gourmet Gallery, a nearby specialty grocery. All of the pools at the resort have beautiful ocean views and great service from the bar. We never had to wait for a drink. Food at the resort is a bit pricy, however, you will find that food all over the island is a bit pricy. We found our best food value at Coco Joe's at the beach. All of the food was very enjoyable. Havana Blue is very expensive and very artsy food. While it was enjoyable, I enjoyed the food at Coco Joe's and Sunset Grille more. The breakfast at Aqua Terra was expensive, but if you go offsite just for breakfast, you will spend as much by the time you pay for a cab. If you are going offsite anyway, then there are lots of places to eat breakfast that will be cheaper. Many parts of the property are looking a little worn, but overall it is a resort I would stay in again. The public areas inside the resort are beautiful. Because we were there about a month before the high tourist season starts back up, there were improvements and basic repairs being done in some areas- nothing that affected our stay. I would love to see some of the projects upon completion. The service we received from bartenders to pool and beach attendants could not have been better. The beach at the hotel is beautiful and not crowded at all. Even when cruise ships came in, we did not notice a change in the number of people. There were plenty of chairs and umbrellas at the beach and pools. It was great to have floats available at the beach. It would be great if the hotel offered a shuttle to/from the airport rather than having to pay for a taxi for this one trip. There were lots of honeymoon couples at the resort- not us, we have been married 29 years. With that being said, there were people there from all age groups and walks of life. I cannot imagine anyone not being comfortable here.
