“A Great Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2012

We planned a family trip for my son's Bar Mitzvah. We chose the Marriott for the convenient location the property offered. It turned out to be an excellent choice. We booked 7 rooms and when we arrived the room assignments were a little bumpy but the staff worked quickly to fix the situation. The rooms were spacious and clean. We stayed at the Morning Star Beach area of the property. We highly recommend it so long as walking is not a issue. Staying on the beach was great. We also used the upper hotel area regularly eating breakfast up top at Aqua daily. The buffett was great. The sevice from Julia (omlet station chef), Veroniqua (buffett tender) was terrific as was all the wait staff. We also used the gym. It is not very spacious but did the trick.

Coco Joes down at the water at the Morningstar was convenient and had very good service. The food was very good too, especially the crab salad. When we caught fish deep sea fishing, they cooked up our catch for us. Try their Voodoo Drinks!

When we booked the trip we were unaware of a all inclusive food deal offered at the resort. I highly recommend purchasing it even if you plan to eat out once or twice. I think that the numbers work well in the favor of the guest. Especially if you like tropical drinks.

The front desk manger Pat and Debbie the Morningstar Operations Manager are awesome. They were attentive to our needs and did everything within their power to ensure that our family had a care free week, so that we could concentrate on our son and his Bar Mitzvah celebration.

Michael V.

Room Tip: I like the Morningstar area on the beach. Also you may want to pick a second or third floor room wi...

This property could stand to be downgraded to a 3-star at best and comparable to a Fairfield or Courtyard.

If you have a rental beware, parking is a nightmare. We knew the property was undergoing a remodel about a year ago but for them not to consider parking was a bit perplexing.

We stayed over the Thanksgiving weekend and our high expectations ended with a dry fizzle.

The double-bed room was spacious, with nicely situated furniture and very large closet. The bathroom is cute (meaning small) but serves the purpose. The wood grain and storage cube holes gives an otherwise bland bathroom an inviting feel.

The customer service overall is hit or miss at this property.

Our first stop was at Aqua-tera, a bar/outdoor experience. The bartender/server Jana had a strange demeanor and unfriendly attitude. We approached the bar said hi and asked if we could sit outside and be served - she turned her back and handed us menus. The question was repeated and she raised her eyebrows and shrugged her shoulders. Then with the return of a blank stare she said she will be out to help us.

Our sons joined us a few minutes later and Jana perked up a bit. We decided to have our meals inside since the rain started to fall. Jana had more conversation with a fellow employee than with the other 3 guest sitting in front of her at the bar. Ridiculous.

The Cesar salad was great. Also the cheese quesadilla and the burger surpassed our expectations.

The pool side employees were the most welcoming and cordial. Dedire, the server did an excellent joy of checking in with us and handling our beverage orders. Also the towel girl was pleasant and the only one who verbally said 'enjoy your stay'.

We had Thanksgiving Dinner at the hotel, they offered a buffet-style. Reservations were not required but welcomed. When we stopped by to make reservations the hostess said no-need just come back. Upon the return another female was at the desk. She asked if we made reservations, we explained what we were told - she shook her head in annoyance and after flipping the pages a few times offered us a seat in the half-empty dining room. We were there for almost 2.5 hours and there were tables that were consistently empty - so why the attitude?!

Nevertheless, the food was great! An entire Thanksgiving spread was available from 3-10 pm. Our server was ok...she could have been a bit more cordial, by this time we were used to the treatment.

The kids center never opened and they were quite a few kids at the property. Another missed opportunity to give the 'experience' did not happen.

On our last night my son called for 2 sets of towels - 35 minutes later, nothing. He called again and another 10 minutes went by before someone showed up.

One thing about most of the employees at this property, they do not make the effort to give a smile or at least greet you. It made us wonder how they were being treated and who holds them accountable.

Upon departure we said hi to a male pulling a towel cart and a female housekeeper and they looked scared out of their wits. Obviously they are not used to receiving greetings nor were trained to make each guest feel welcome at all times.

Check-out went about the same. Zana, was seemed quite annoyed that we asked to adjust the folio since one of the restaurant charges exceed the receipt. Then she plastered on a smile as in bon-voyage glad you all are leaving.

With all of the mis-steps, we decided not to even attempt to contact a member of the management team and avoid yet another strained encounter.

If it weren't for the views and the pools, and local events, I don't know that this property would be in business.

I compared recent experiences at the Atlantis on Paradise Island and the Sugar Bay Resort about 20 minutes away - both top this Marriott 10 to 1.

Room Tip: Sea view. Only 7-8th floors on the garden view; away from the elevators.

I usually don't write reviews but after our experience with Lissa at the front desk when we checked in I knew I had too. It was our Honeymoon and we were treated very special. Lissa got us an amazing room and made us feel like we were important and she genuinely cared that it was our honeymoon. Thank you Lissa!!!!

The hotel is nice, actually updated recently. Room a bit small but clean, we were in the building by the tennis courts, which was perfect. Quiet, with a view of the ocean. There are 3 Marriott properties in a row. Each property has a pool. The pool at the timeshare ,where I stayed in 2010 on a girls trip is a child's dream pool. It's way to small to handle all of the guest. However, if your a family with children, then this pool has a slide with activities always going on around the pool. The beach is dirty at the timeshare but most people try and grab a chair at the pool. Now where we stayed this year, the pool seemed to be a party pool. The bar pool is deep and not for kids. The other pool located in same area is probably 3 feet everywhere. Both pools were loud and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Including our small group. If you want quiet, this pool is not for you. Head to the pool at the beach. It's a walk from the hotel down stairs . I think someone said 76 stairs, I didn't count. It's graduated stairs. You walk a while, then stairs. This pool is small and very shaded, which I loved because I was getting way too dark. It's at least 3 to 4 feet deep all around. There were no children. Total quiet and a nice change for awhile. The nice thing about the Marriott properties is the access to a boat which takes you to the town on the waterfront. It's $6.00 each way and a pleasant boat ride. It's the same price if you take a taxi. There are no other restaurants around so unless you have a car or take the boat or taxi, plan on eating there. The restaurants at the main hotel is fair. I would say breakfast is the best, but may be a little pricey for some. The Buffett is $24.00. I think Orange Juice and coffee were both about $4.00, so eating the Buffett made since. It included your drink. The best pool food is by far at the timeshare pool.

Room Tip: Rooms by the tennis court are quiet with a view. I heard no complaints about room noise or location.

We spend the last few days of our honeymoon at the hotel. It is quite a large property so be ready to walk to the main building if you're in the lower section but they do have a shuttle if you don't want to walk. The hotel is beautiful with plenty to do. The breakfast buffet was plentiful, more than enough to eat and choices. The prices for all are a bit high but you wouldn't expect cheap for a resort like this. The views are exceptional and a short taxi ride gets you to town and shopping! Very close to airport as well.
Our room was lovely but carpet and walls were a little worn. But the beds are heavenly.
The only negative had nothing to do with the hotel but rather the bugs. The no-seeums were horrible for me (didn't bother my travel partners as much). Bring bug spray just in case and use it a lot. If you forget, the bartenders will give you gin to wipe on!! A local remedy!

Many things to do. Excellent service from the concierge, Mandy McMahan.
Shopping, night-time entertainment, restaurants, outdoor activities...
I don't think we would have had as much fun without her suggestions.

Morning Star was much more intimate than the Frenchman's Reef hotel. Checked in at hotel and got a ride down to our bungalow. Wrong room, we were supposed to get ocean view. They promptly corrected it at the second location. The crew at the Morning Star always always greeted you as they passed you. Havana Blue was a beautiful romantic restaurant and great food! Coco Joe's was okay food. Bartender was great there but drinks were not great at the other bars on the property. That was disappointing. Sunset Grill was not great food but service was superb. Great view everywhere on the property but it lacked the island feel. The music at Havanna was techno. The music at the hotel pools was old rock. Nothing wrong. It just did not have it's own identity. Hawaii has Luaus. Keys have hair braids. Some islands have steel drums. This one has no identity. Well, except for the iguanas that lounged with me. That was my favorite part. Huge beautiful iguanas and 3 stray cats that were on this huge property. Infinity pool has a huge drop overlooking the ocean below. Just a side note if this is only a weekend trip. Saturday in town shops close at 5pm. Nothing is open on Sunday. So get to shops before then. Boats do not run in choppy wave weather if you want to island hop. No complaints because we knew we were going in hurricane season. Overall, people friendly. Sights beautiful. Audio sad. Dining okay. Drinks not up to par unless at Coco Joe's or off property. More calm than party atmosphere. Places very enjoyable. Walk enjoyable. All pools wonderful. Sunsets and sunrises breathtaking. Beach soft. Waves good.

Room Tip: "Ocean side" rooms are looking directly at ocean. "Beach side" is looking at a p...
