Owner description: Formerly a slave-trading market, this open-air fruit and vegetable market is a great place to stop and sample the fresh produce, especially the local specialty - genips.

We know very well the history of this magnificent square, once the place for selling and buying slaves. Not a proud moment in the history of Danish colonialism. However Denmark was in fact the very first country to give up slavery, ahead of neighboring colonial powers and before the US.
During this visit of the square in the very low season, the square was one big parking lot, with a simple string of traders. In high season however we have been told that the square is an attraction in itself, not only because of the history.

If you want to buy locally made crafts and support local artists, this should be a stop for you. But it was hot and noisy, on the main road at the waterfront, and not very intriguing. The farmer's market, which is a couple of blocks away, back from the waterfront, is much more interesting, and has great local produce, a chance to talk to local farmers about what it's like there, and a better feel.

But you can buy some great souvenirs for a good price. Never pay what they ask for, they always go lower. And you have to get a fresh coconut.
