We know very well the history of this magnificent square, once the place for selling and buying slaves. Not a proud moment in the history of Danish colonialism. However Denmark was in fact the very first country to give up slavery, ahead of neighboring colonial powers and before the US.
During this visit of the square in the very low season, the square was one big parking lot, with a simple string of traders. In high season however we have been told that the square is an attraction in itself, not only because of the history.
