This was a big disappointment. It's just a tiny tower you can see from anywhere in town, and if you go up top all that's there is a bunch of gimmicky pirate stuff, even though it really has nothing to do with the actual pirate Blackbeard. If you do go, try going later in the evening for a drink, appetizer, and a nice view of the sunset on you own terms. If you go during the peak hours, you are forced to go on the $10 walking tour just to get through the gates for a peak, but once the cruise ship traffic is gone, the guard let us in to just poke around and go to the hotel bar that is attached for a drink and snack that were both good. We tried to go during the day with some friends, and the people at both entrances were basically robots that could only use pre-loaded phrases from dealing with cruise ships all day and couldn't understand why we wouldn't want to pay $10 to go on a long walking tour with 50 old people just to see a brick turret up close.

Like most, we stopped here while on a cruise. This was actually the only place I had a real interest in visiting. We ended up taking a taxi rather than one of the ships tours. The guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. About half way through the tour, I had a minor medical emergency. Most of the staff stopped what they were doing and jumped into action. In no time, I was off for an unscheduled tour of the St. Thomas Hospital....I would have preferred finishing the Black Beards tour :) I cannot thank them all enough for their assistance and professionalism. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to return and complete what I had started. I should say, the views are spectacular !

Cruising the area we stopped in and took an excursion to this breathtaking view of St. Thomas. Located on one of the higher points of the Island, was what has become known as Blackbeard's Castle. The actual fortress structure is quite interesting, the grounds well manicured and the view outstanding. However the huge draw back to this excursion is the way they over book it, it was crowded, hard to find a seat and the swimming area's were totally over run. It would be nice to go back and see it at a time when all the Cruise ships were not in port. Due to this overcrowding problem the price is not really a value. We were expecting to spend the whole day and ended up having to leave early because of the lack of space. We went into town and went shopping instead. To be fair if you went without all the crowds it would be a nice attraction. But with them be prepared to pay a lot for a great view and some pirate history which I love. But be ready to exit early before you pull all your hair out!

While on a recent Eastern Caribbean cruise we stopped at St Thomas and took an excursion to Blackbeard's Castle. The castle is located on top of a very high hill and included a fort or castle that Blackbeard and his pirates could protect themselves from. It also included free tasting of locally made rum. Yum and what pirate doesn't like his rum. There is a gift shop and a couple of other stately homes you can go through. There is also a bar for a quick drink on the way down the hill. The hill includes 99 steps so if you have walking difficulties, this might not be for you. At the bottom of the steps is the downtown shopping area.

It was interesting to learn about the culture of the area.
The Castle is small but the guide was enjoyable to listen to.
We actually hiked up from town and the tour brings you back to the same spot we began.

Not something we would do again but we enjoyed the exercise.
Worth seeing once.
