“Prepare for a long walk and bring everything you need”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2012

Because you are not going to want to leave! It is hard to find and you should be in good shape, but these are two of the reasons this beach is so secluded. Bring plenty of water because the walk is long and, while all on pavement for the most part, is still steep and hot. Park outside of Botony Bay and sign in with the guards at the gate. I have visited three or four times now and have never been able to snorkel there, between how rough it usually is and not finding an easy way in. Lots of exploring to do, however. There is a pool that you have to do some rock climbing to get to that you can relax in -- just big enough for three or four people. Be sure to look for wildlife. I've seen parrots, land turtles, and once a green moray eel fighting and eating an octopus in the shallows!

“Where sea meets sea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

If your lucky enough to find this place you'll have found real paradise. Its the only place on St.Thomas where you can sit between the Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean sea on one beach. Very secluded!!

“If you can get by the gate snobs. Mermaids Chair is a once in a lifetime experience...its AMAZING.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2012

Boy was this hard to find! You have to take 30 all the way to the end of the island (west), then you have to turn into a housing construction/sales sight at Botany Bay. There is a guard post at the front. The gate was open when we arrived and the guard was FAST asleep. THERE were NO signs providing that you were not allowed on the site. AND we didnt know what to do. (you should wake up the guard and PRAY that the person in the Office trailer is EITHER awake or there, so that they can "sign you in". SAD SAD SAD to know that St Thomas hasn't protected this NATIONAL treasure, so that visitors and locals can still easily enjoy it! While I didn't get to meet the jerk that told my friends that we were not suppose to be at the site, please note THERE ARE NO SIGNS that prohibit entry, there was access by car to get down to the site and stairs and even a note next to some boats, that equipment on the beach belonged to homeowners. So, obviously people other then the home owners were allowed on the beach. ALSO, all the homes we saw were gated. So it wasnt like you could make any mistakes and go into anyones drives way.

SO, while you are suppose to sign in, if the guard is asleep and no one at the office, then take a left and head down to the "chair". If the staff make you walk it....it is almost 2 miles (each way) and a HARD walk. Bring cold water and GOOD shoes. If you can drive, drive ALL the way down to the site. SMALL cars and Jeeps were do FINE!

IGNORE the rude neighbors, that don't realize that most travelers in this economic time could afford to purchase property in their neighborhood. SAD SAD SAD! This should be for everyone!

“Well worth the walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2012

This is a double-sided beach and sandbar that connects to a small island (or cay) off the western side of St. Thomas. In order to get there, we drove to west side of the island along hwy 30 and parked in front of the Botany Bay main gate. Then we walked from the gate to the beach area (you have to sign in with the guard at the gate and he will give you simple directions to the beach. Be sure to ask for directions specifically to Mermaids Chair because there is also a beach nearby called Sandy Beach). It is quite a long walk, about 45 minutes (I think that guests of Botany Bay can actually ask for a ride), but when you arrive it will be worth it. The whole area is absolutely breathtaking. There are a number of small cays and formations that can be explored after crossing the sandbar. These can be accessed through a small path which is on the far side of the beach on the right (North, I think). It leads to numerous rocky formations that are wonderful to climb and photograph and a small pool that connects to the ocean that we were able to snorkel in. Be very careful if you decide to do this since there is no beach and the rocks are extremely slippery, especially with the flippers on. (I would suggest that only experienced snorkelers and strong swimmers do this due to factors such as waves and current and surrounding rocks, fire coral, and sharp sea urchins). This definitely was the highlight of our trip. It really is so easy to spend half a day there and lose track of time completely.
