Owner description: Offering the only free museum in town, Hassel Island tours and historical downtown walking tours! A pleasant historical adventure awaits you at St. Thomas Historical Trust's free museum. Tours take about 30 minutes, and you'll be led by knowledgeable local historians who love to tell the remarkable stories of St. Thomas' exciting history. Hassel Island Tours are Wednesday's at 8:30 am OR BY APPOINTMENT!!! Tour this amazing historical site with our super-knowledgeable guide "Doc." See the ruins of Danish and British forts as well as the leprosarim, the unique Creque Marine Railroad. Check out a real diving bell. Downtown walking tours with one of our certified guides are available by appointment. Just call! Our free museum gives you a chance to ask our experts about anything you have seen in St. Thomas and get the real facts! Genuine artifacts from the days of pirates, the age of steam ships and 100 year old 3-D images mesmerize history buffs along with dozens of antique photos from the late 1900s and early 20th century, and a sensational collection of Antique West Indian furniture. Learn about our 1867 tsunami, and the ominous threat that was the real reason the U.S. purchased the islands from Denmark. The best little museum in town, for visitors or locals. If you are local, please ask to see the "riddle picture", and see if you can identify the image. Museum hours: Open Tuesdays and Thursday's 10-3:30pm or by appt. How to find us: On Main Street's eastern end, on the West side of Roosevelt Park. Look for the flags flying from our balcony in front of our 1840s building. Enter the museum via our mini garden courtyard visible through the beautiful antique iron gates gate on left side of building, after pressing the button for admittance. Free, but donations are always welcome. The museum is operated by a 501(c) 3 non-profit.

“St. Thomas and St. Johns”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

This was a great island to visit for our first Caribbean adventure. Now we can add more islands on our bucket list for the very near future. Loved the crystal clear water, warm weather and white sand beaches. This was very different than Coney Island.

A little hard to find but worth the effort! Very knowledgeable staff and lots of interesting historical items; has a short film about ruins on Hassel Island. Great for anyone wanting a little more than just beach and shopping experience!

“Nice stop while Downtown St. Thomas, near the park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

Downtown St. Thomas is about walking and enjoying the history, the shopping, the people...

If you start your walk at the east end of town, behind Fort Christian, you might begin with the St. Thomas Historial Trust Museum, giving you a glimpse as to what you will be seeing as you head down Main Street and the waterfront. Beautiful little museum, excellent historic details of Charlotte Amalie, Hassell Island, the government , and run by really lovely people.
