“The Beach is the ONLY Reason to stay here!”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

I have been to St. Thomas a few times on a cruise and enjoyed it so much decided to stay a week at Bluebeard's. Let me start by saying we rented a car after seeing reviews of this resort being a little secluded. The driving on the left didn't bother us at all as you quickly get used to it but the roads in St. Thomas are horrible! I will say 90% of the rental cars are little 4 cylinders that can barely make it up the hills. The main road around the island was OK but to get to Bluebeard's, any other beach, resort, etc. was extremely hilly. In fact Bluebeard's jokes about it on the sign to their entrance with "You survived the roads, now the fun begins". The road going to the resort is straight down a long bumpy road with speed bumps and pot holes. We drove around a lot so in our case the rental was cheaper than taking a taxi everywhere. I would say rent a jeep but note that they are double in price.

Now the resort:
The private beach at Bluebeard's was amazing. The room & service, not so much...We checked in and all seemed fine until we had to drive to our building and find that the girl did not activate our key cards. So we packed all of our luggage back in the car and drove back to the front office. She explained that the cards should be working and something must be wrong with the door.?! She gave us new cards and stated that maint. would be down to make sure we got in. Well we drove back to the room and the new cards worked just fine. Maint. did show up quickly but acted like we were using the cards wrong when these were actually activated and the first ones were not!

Once inside the room was what I expected from reading other reviews....Average.
The bathroom was dingy and the floor being tile seemed sticky but being on the beach tile is easier to deal with. The bed was pretty comfy so we were happy about that. We noticed sugar ants in our kitchen and bath so kept all food we bought in the fridge. If you use the room just to sleep and get ready like we did it's tolerable. Once you walk outside and see the grounds and the beach you forget where you are with the palm trees, hammocks and beautiful beach.

We visited many other resorts on the island, Marriott, Ritz etc. and they were stunning but our beach was actually better so we were happy about that. We ate at many different places on the island since Bluebeard's only has a pool bar with light breakfast and lunch but they were friendly at the bar.

Beware of misc charges on your bill at the end of your stay. They charge an energy fee but also added other made up charges that we had to get them to remove. They said the "Computer" made a mistake... I think they hope you won't notice and will be surprised when you get your credit card bill. All in all St. Thomas is great but there are far better resorts with nice beaches.

The beach at Bluebeard's is 5 star but the resort gets a 2 until service and rooms improve. We will try another resort when we return to St. Thomas.

I would never stay again at Bluebeard's. Our one bedroom room was absolutely infested with cockroaches. On one night of our stay, we actually found one very large cockroach in our bed. Both bathrooms were infested as well. When we mentioned this to the front desk staff, they merely shrugged. Besides teeming with cockroaches, the hotel staff's service was non-existent. They lost our reservation on check-in and made us wait an hour while they figured it out, even though we had all the paperwork, and then charged us more than the amount in our written reservation confirmation. Room service was just as bad, we couldn't even get a towel replaced during our 5 day stay. In short, this property was filthy, cockroach infested, and the service was simply awful.

Go for the beaches, nothing else.
The room was wonderful! Very adequate, had a kitchenette... Only drawback was towels/linens not changed daily. Bed was very comfortable; nice patio.
The private beach was pretty cool - very laid back. If you venture to the far right of the beach, you will find a little "private pool" area of the beach - I enjoyed sitting down, watching the waves wash over the rocks. Was awesome.
The iguanas were around the first 2 days and were entertaining. Pool was wonderful. Bad thing in the evening - the chiggers or something else came out. I have bites all over my legs from them and they itch like you wouldn't believe.
We had breakfast at the pool bar - very adequate even if a bit overpriced.
Went off property for meals. Shopping downtown was fun at the tents - be sure to bring cash as most of them do not accept credit cards. Got my hair braided - $2/braid - was very fun! Ate at Gladys' restaurant - very good food and service.
Blackbeards castle was closed - no one told us. We hiked up the 99 steps and rest of the climb only to find out it was closed. Good exercise but I wish we would have known. Bluebeard's castle is a joke - it's a Wyndham sister resort not anything to "sightsee".
Paradise Point had magnificent views of the bay and some good shopping. I had BBQ chicken which was very good. They had a limited menu while we were there, which we were not told ahead of time.
Some good shopping at RedHook. Best thing we did was take the ferry to St. John's. The town was cool - shopping was ok - not the best.
We went to Cinnamon Bay - the MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACH I HAVE EVER SEEN! I was in water up to my shoulders and could still see my toes!! I absolutely recommend it! Trunk Bay has some marvelous snorkeling from what I was told. Hubby and I will need to take up snorkeling for our next beach trip.
When we got through at the beach (I didn't want to leave!), we ate at FishTails in RedHook. Probably one of the best meals we had!! I had snapper which was to die for. We had the smoked tuna dip appetizer - omgggggggg it was fabulous!

Pool bar - was a fun place to hang out and eat breakfast. Closes fairly early so you will have to go elsewhere if you are a late night party person. Vince has a very dry sense of humor - lots of fun. Bo is also fun and full of island information.
Overall was a great experience - glad we went around via taxi. Although it's a bit pricey (gas was almost $5/gallon while we were there) it's better than trying to drive on the left hand of the road with all those windy mountainous roads where they all drive crazy and think the middle of the road is theirs.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the beach. We were in Building B - very nice

Bluebeard's has a gorgeous property, including a private beach (though very rocky). The room was a fine size for a family of maybe 3 - fitting 4 adults into it was very cramped for a family vacation however. The floors were always very dirty and the overall impression the room gave off was quite off-putting. The kitchen was basically stocked, but lacked an oven. The view from our balcony was nice, but the noise and constant dripping of our barely-alive AC unit was horrible. The pool was superb and the beach close by - beware of iguanas (they keep to themselves and provide nice entertainment). However, the place is in desparate need of a restaurant! Overall, my trip to St. Thomas was amazing - if the room had been better, the trip would have been perfect.

Room Tip: Ask for a rennovated room (buildings A & B as of May 2012)!

We stayed at Bluebeards for a week and had a pretty lackluster experience. The best part of Bluebeards was the quiet and secluded beach but everything else, from the service of the staff to the ground and rooms, was without frills and a bit run down. The resort is somehwat out of the way from everything else so you may want to rent a car if you plan to explore the island. Part of the resort has been renovated so if possible try to stay in one of these rooms. Overall our stay was average. If you are okay with giving up the frills (room service & daily cleaning, no restaurant on site, poor tv reception, etc...) then this resort is a fine choice.

This resort lacks practicality on some features than others. For example, if it's seclusion and disconnect from the world is what you want, meaning poor or no internet connection and fuzzy TV reception in the room BUT nice private beach with great sand, water, and scene, then this is for you. Luckily, 3G was great on my phone at the beach. So if you need to confirm reservations for your kayak or bike tour or need to yelp a restaurant, you are "forced" to do it sitting under a shady palm tree on the sand or on one of the hammocks by the beach... Nice... Of course, there is one computer with internet access at the lobby. Laundry is coin operated and expensive, bring enough clothes.

Room was nice, complete, and clean. Interior design and furniture is updated and new. Bed was STIFF!! I got worried that my back was not going to like this, but the room was quiet, the AC made very little noise, and all you can hear is the waves crashing outside. I slept surprisingly well with no aches.

Service was spotty. Not everybody seems to know about anything and would not care to find out. Days prior to checking in, I called ahead saying that my flight was going to arrive at 8pm so we would be late for check in. The gal on the phone just said, "The guard will take care of you and give you the keys." I later find out that the lobby opens late on the weekends (til 11 pm) and the lady who checked us in was very nice and gave some good recommendations for eateries that were open late. Other times when we inquired about places, they would have NO idea and almost try to call a taxi for you so you could just get out of their hair. Room Service? Forget about it. The lady at the desk on another day just said, "We DON'T do that here..." I later on find out that they will clean and replenish the towels/linen in your room for a hefty fee, about $120. I'm already forced to pay an extra $11/per person per day ($22 max) for their "energy fee". Not sure where this fee goes to because only one of their 5 ice machines were working during my stay. But they do provide a broom and dustpan located in your room closet so you can sweep all the sand you unintentionally brought in.

Lastly, location is EXCELLENT. You get your own beach. You wake up in your PJs and can go straight to lounging on the sand. The water, sand, and sun was excellent. The view from our room was great. The resort was not too far from Charlotte Amelia, but not too close either. Red Hook is not too far if you plan to take the ferries. If you go towards Red Hook, you'll find a few local grocery stores to get your basic food necessities. One was literally called, "Grocery Store" and another was Marina Market at Red Hook. Renting a car than calling for taxis is better on this island.

Overall, my stay at this timeshare was pretty decent. Even if service was spotty, the beach almost drugs you into a nice, quiet, relaxing mode. Which is what vacation is all about right?

Like a lot of people, we were a little worried about the resort. But, after a week there, we'll be back. We stayed in building F in one of the studio plus units on the top floor. Only buildings A and B have had the recent renovations, but our unit while a little dated and not perfect was just fine for our family. The rest of the resort has way many more pros than cons. The beach is our biggest draw, private, secluded, beautiful view out to sea, watching sails, cruise ships, and freighters pass in the distance, along with the occasional sea plane. Our daughters loved the shells and corals that washed up on the beach each morning. The iguanas are not a nuisance and add to the charm of the resort. The cats aren't an issue either. They're all there, but you don't notice them if you don't want to. The groundskeepers do a really good job of keeping the place clean, the resort staff was very friendly and the security guards are great to visit with. Vince runs a great swim up bar and can carry a conversation with anyone who takes a seat. We visited quite a few beaches, more so on St. John, but we really liked this beach with no competition for space, relaxing waves, and no sea gulls. We're planning a return trip in a year, we'll definitely stay again.
