“Awesome just like last time!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2014

This is our second time to Villa Marbella Suites. The Virgins Islands are spectacular. So I am sure we will be back and will stay at Villa Marbella Suites again! The rooms are quite affordable for you to use the Villa as a home base when you go island hopping. We go to St. John a lot and we return to St. Thomas for the night. St. Thomas seems to have more amenities than St. John. So it all works out. The package deal that Leah and Gunnar have is great so that you can get the room and car with them. You can then take the car barge to St. John. Overall the whole trip is affordable enough to return again and again! Moreover, you get a discount for returning! All the more reason to use the Villa again!

The location:
We don't like going to Charlotte Amalie especially when the cruise ships are in town. The location of this Villa is such that this isn't a problem at all. Bolongo Bay and Red Hook (the ferry dock) are very close. So there are many eating out options 10-15 minutes away without hitting any crazy traffic. Food Center is about 15 minutes drive, where you can pick up groceries.

The rooms:

We stayed in the Frenchman's View Loft for the first three nights and the last night we were moved to the Mango room because they did not have any other rooms available. Leah took care of the room change. We just packed most of our stuff up and when we returned in the evening everything was nicely laid out in the Mango room.

The Frenchman's View Loft is a great two story room for couples. We like to cook some nights so that we can just sit and enjoy the evening and the breeze instead of eating out. The kitchenette is sufficiently equipped for the making salsa, tacos, chicken, fish etc. We also made breakfast every morning, usually eggs and toast, which was super easy in the kitchenette. We also had access to the grill, which made cooking skewered veggies, meats and fish a lot easier. Leah cleaned our dishes and provided more if we asked her. She also provides spices from her own kitchen if you want a dash of something. There is an honor system for a larger fridge near the front entrance that is stocked with water, sodas and beer. When you return from a warm day at the beach, it is a nice refreshing treat. The room is very romantic. The views are spectacular from the private balcony and the pool area. Although you can cool the room down very well with the split AC, you can also create a cross breeze in the evenings by opening the window in the bathroom and the front sliding doors. It feels quite fresh that way and you also decrease your carbon footprint.

The Mango room is much smaller than the Frenchman's View Loft. It is ideal for singles but you can manage with two people as well much like we did. The amenities are about the same as the Frenchman's View Loft but the space is much less. It is completely doable especially for the price for those couples on a budget.

The other perks: Almost every morning we were greeted by Jager, their awesome dog. Because I am a doglover, this was a very special treat for me:) Leah provides beach towels and other beach activity things in the room. If you want fresh towels, you can always ask her. Water comes at a premium on these islands. So we try to keep our towels dry and reuse them. This is us being responsible world citizens. The Villa can provide fresh towels everyday if you really want. We try to keep the room as clean as possible, but it seemed cleaner everyday when we returned. So someone, most likely Leah cleans when you are out and about. They also have a private beach that is quite secluded. We snorkeled at the beach and it has some neat stuff there like eel grass, corals, a lot of silversides, and many common reef fish. We even spotted a Barracuda and shark once. We got the Barracuda on video!

The car rental:
The car program is pretty flawless. You rent a car of your choice from their fleet of 20 or so cars. You get a ride from the airport to the Villa, and then you get your own car. When you return the car, you can vacuum out the sand and wipe out the sunscreen. They provide the vacuum. If you don't have time to do that, you can leave some money for the car cleaning staff.

Overall, Leah and Gunnar are very gracious. They treat you like friends but also give you the privacy that you want. Above all, they know what people need by talking to them and will make your experience as memorable as possible!

Thank you so much for the great review! We are so glad that you chose to return to Villa Marbella for both the Frenchman's Bay loft and our cozy Mango room! We do try to reduce the 'carbon footprint too" by having the guests use the towels a couple times before washing, but if they want them changed every day we are more than happy to do that too!
We look forward to seeing you again in the future!

My boyfriend Jay and I came to St Thomas for 4 nights and were so happy we chose to stay at Villa Marbella.

The room: We stayed in the Mountainside View Loft and it was perfect. We loved how big it was with the two levels and the decor was charming. It was probably the cleanest hotel room I have ever stayed in, seriously the place was spotless. The kitchenette was perfect for making a quick breakfast and storing some drinks. The longer we were there the more we felt like we were coming home after a day of adventuring. We were even greeted with a bottle of rum!

The property: The villa has lots of parking so you park just steps from your room. Each room has a private entrance and private balcony with amazing views so you feel almost like you're the only ones staying there. The pool is the highlight, watch the sunsets from here. There's also an honor fridge if you need a quick water bottle or some ice, etc. They make it super easy. It's located in a pretty central area so its easy to get around the island quickly.

The people: Leah, Gunnar, Monica and Jaeger (the pooch) were such friendly, welcoming hosts. They answered all of our many questions, gave great suggestions on where to eat and where to go, and just made our trip easy. Leah even let me print my boarding pass in her office and graciously filled up our Jeep when we had forgotten to get gas before leaving. Renting a car from them was the least expensive option and included airport pickup and drop off.

Can't wait to come stay again!

Room Tip: They all have private balconies and spectacular views. Can't go wrong.

We spent four nights in the Mountiainside View Loft and had a very nice time. The owners maintain a separate jeep rental business and the vehicle we rented from them was in perfect condition. The narrow, sometimes steep, roads to the property were not always easy to navigate but the jeep made it in fine form and the GPS we brought along helped. Drinks were available in a fridge next to the office and were on the honor system. Our room featured a separate entrance and a kitchenette. Beach chars, a cooler and towels in each room made it easy to put together a trip to a beach. The stairway to the loft is not for those who are too young or too old and the low ceiling in the loft might bump a few heads. The pool features a stunning view and beautiful sunsets. The route down to the beach is not an easy walk for all who might try it. There appears to be a bit of construction at the beach so its privacy might not endure.

Room Tip: The Frenchman's View Loft is accessible through the Mountainside View Loft or via a patio door e...

Just returned from a 5-day stay in the Mango room with my best friend. The room was small but clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. The size didn’t matter because we spent the days exploring the island. The location is serene with a beautiful view to wake up to. It was a little difficult finding taxis that would drive up the hill to the villa but we managed & they have cars available to rent to make life easier. Everywhere you need to go is about 15 mins away. They have drinks available in a fridge but for food I would recommend heading to the Marriott for their breakfast buffet & Red Hook for dining at night.
Everyone at Villa Marbella was extremely helpful in giving us tips on where to dine and places to see. We had an amazing trip & will definitely be back to stay here again. I highly recommend Villa Marbella!!

Thank you Leah & Gunner for your wonderful hospitality ☺

We stayed here for 4 nights in March in one of the loft suites. The air conditioning was insufficient for the 2 levels. The upper loft area was never comfortable. The kitchen area consisted of a mini fridge with a microwave and hot plate on top and a small cabinet with a coffee maker and toaster. Very odd. The local taxi service had never heard of the place and the owners would not provide rides to or from the airport or ferry unless you rented a jeep from them for the entire stay. No one day rentals available. The views are fabulous but are not enough for me to recommend this place.

Boy, this hospitality stuff sure can be frustrating: you folks seemed to be having a GREAT time with us...and now this bummer review. )-: Sigh. But, as always, despite how a less-than-stellar review stings, there are always lessons to be learned on how we can improve our guests’ experiences, and this is no exception…we are grateful for your candid feedback…we only wish we’d gotten it sooner so we could have addressed the issues while you were still here!

I’ll respond as best I can, first on the transportation points:

1. We tried to contact you several times before your arrival in St. Thomas to find out exactly when you were arriving and didn’t receive and exact response.
2. As we do with all guests, we suggested a rental car – not necessarily from us but from anyone -- because this is by far the most convenient mode of transportation, especially for 4 people.) You never responded so we assumed you had either made rental car arrangements elsewhere or would not be renting a car upon arrival.
3. As we always do with all guests, we sent you driving instructions to Villa Marbella, suggesting that you print them, whether for yourselves or for the taxi you’d be taking upon arrival. It’s not a huge island, but with few street signs and a million curves and hills, not even the most veteran taxi drivers know where everything is!

We can only conclude that your review comments are the result of poor communication between ourselves, as hosts, and you, as our guests. You guys seemed to be happy and having a great time throughout your stay! You loved all of the restaurants we recommended, we spoke to you each morning and you said great you were having a good time…and we DO offer one day car rentals if we have vehicles available. Your husband loved our private little beach with its zillion sea urchin skeletons so much that he headed down the trail twice a day! And all of you enjoyed quiet evenings on the deck, drinking in the view with a nice glass of wine…to us, you were the perfect guests throughout your stay, which is what made your review so surprising. But to you, unfortunately, we were less than perfect hosts…and we very much regret that.)-:

We understand that isn’t always comfortable to complain or ask for adjustments when you are the customer, and as nice as you all were, things like the AC issue didn’t get mentioned to us; most folks are quick to complain! Gunnar and I, despite our best efforts to make our guests happy, tend to believe that “a quiet guest is a happy guest”…and they usually are…but not this time. Your feedback tells us that we need to be more proactive and specific when we ask a guest how they’re doing… “Are you having fun?” isn’t enough; we need to ask guests “how is your room?”, “do you need anything”, etc…we need to make Villa Marbella as welcoming and comfortable for each and every guest we are privileged to host. We so regret that little things which could have been easily remedied if we’d only known turned into nuisances which ultimately lessened the luster of your guest experience.

We hope you give us a second chance; if you do, next time we can carefully coordinate your transportation before you arrive as well as make sure that your experience at Villa Marbella is as perfect as it can be...and that your room is cool and comfortable as it should be! Thank you for your honest feedback.

Leah & Gunnar

P.S. Almost forgot: yes, our suites have dinky little kitchens because that’s what most of our guests want; even a dinky kitchen is a great bonus at our price point in St. Thomas! (-:

My husband and I returned to Villa Marbella in mid-March for a winter respite and, once again, had a thoroughly delightful stay thanks to proprietors Leah and Gunner Watson and their beautiful guest house. We stayed in the Cruzan suite - a comfy, roomy space with a small kitchenette [refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, sink, propane stove] - and a small patio that overlooks the ocean. Watching the cruise ships come into Charlotte Amalie harbor while drinking our morning coffee was a real treat! Since our last visit, the Watsons have added cars for rent to the services they provide [which is a real plus if you've ever waited an hour at the airport to pick up your rental car]. We also enjoyed a sunset cruise among the coves and harbors of St. Thomas with Gunner at the helm of his small motorboat. He offers a variety of personalized excursions to guests and we're already making plans to return to Villa Marbella for a tour of the British Virgin Islands. We've found our "home away from home" in St. Thomas in Villa Marbella!

Room Tip: We've stayed in the Frenchmans Suite - a cozy room with spiral staircase up to the loft bedroom...

We're so happy that you've made Villa Marbella your home away from home! What a compliment. I'm so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Cruzan and the Frenchman's Bay Loft during your stays.

Also, Thank you so much for letting us know that you enjoyed your experience with our own Captain Gunnar on Blue Paradise Charters and your experience with renting a car from us! We feel your vacation starts as soon as you arrive, so being able to provide our guests with immediate service (instead of waiting for an hour like you said) is something that we pride ourselves in! Knowing that our hospitality means so much to you really puts a smile on our face!

Had a very relaxing stay at Villa Marbella Suites. Leah and Gunner were exceptional hosts! We rented a jeep from them and Leah picked us up from the airport and dropped us off after our stay. We stayed in the Mountainside Loft Suite. It was very clean, comfortable, quiet and safe. A very nice place to relax after a day at the beach and touring the island. Leah and Gunner were very helpful in recommending and booking our excursions. I would definitely recommend renting a jeep from them. The price is right and gives you the freedom of exploring the island at your leisure. We were a little nervous about driving on the opposite side of the road, but you quickly adapt. Leah recommended a few nice restaurants that were nearby. Will definitely be returning to Villa Marbella in the near future!
