My family and I stayed here on a vacation that we knew would be our last as a full family. My father was sick and we were making this extra special and taking him on the trip of a lifetime. The hotel pull out all the stops to ensure that my family and I were beyond well taken care of. I cannot describe the amount of love and care was put into such a special stay for us. My father had an incredible time, despite passing a way a couple of months later, I knew he enjoyed his time and I am so glad that those were how he spent his last days. I could never say enough about how incredible this hotel and staff is. Much love to all of you.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas is a great hotel with spectacular views, great staff, and lots of fun activities to do.

To start with we were greeted upon checking into the hotel with a complimentary fruity rum drink (or just fruity for those who do not opt for rum) and then taken by golf cart to your room. Johnny drove us and helped us with the bags and was the nicest guy we met on our vacation. He let us know all there was to do around our hotel and really made us feel welcomed.

The Ritz-Carlton has 2 sides: a hotel side and a timeshare side. Each side has a pool and beach area with a bar/restaurant area close by. The hotel side was always much more crowded, mainly because the because next to it had the majority of the water sports. Everything without a motor is included in a package that you can purchase through the hotel which includes kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boarding, wind surfing, etc.

There are numerous restaurants on the resort that were all outstanding. We did not get a chance to use to spa, but the interior was very beautiful and clean. The gym was extremely large and was generally empty when we were there. The pool areas were always well maintained and you could rent certain lawn games such as bocce ball and baggo down by the time share pool/beach area.

Overall during the week we were here we only left the resort only a few times, there was plenty to keep us busy and entertained around the Ritz. If I were to return to St. Thomas I would definitely be coming back here.

We finally found a hotel we like on the island! Hotel is beautiful, upgraded rooms are fantastic and the service was up to Ritz quality. We've stayed at a few other St. Thomas hotels (Marriott and Sugarbay) and this is our favorite!

Although this says the Ritz, the rooms are old and noisy. Beds are not comfortable. A corporate party overran the entire resort and they partied late every night with an outside band. No thoughts for other guests. This place looks and feels worn out.

Dear rlfaler,

Thank you for your review regarding your stay at oru resort in May 2013.

I have reviewed your comments with my Leadership team and sincerely apologize that your found the resort run down and were dissappointed by the music events held for a viisiting group on property.

While we understand your dissappointment with the music and group events, we do have local noise ordinances which require us to end any outdoor noise, including music, by 10:00 PM. We humbly apologize thtat these functions negatively impacted your enjoyment of our resort.

On a positive note, we commenced an extensive Beautification project in September 2013 and it was completed in early December 2013. During these five months every single one of our 180 rooms and suites received brand new soft goods and updates.

I sincerely appreciate your feedback from your May visit and I look forward to welcoming you back to experience the ‘new-look’ Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas.

Kind Regards,
Bernd Kuhlen

My wife and I had a nice stay at this Resort recently over a long weekend. If I could sum it up I would say we weren’t blown away but it was very comfortable and we had a good time.

Pros:

Nice bathroom. The bathroom in our room was large and looked like it had recently been re-done. There was a nice-sized shower with terrific water pressure as well as a good-looking soaking tub. The double vanity was spacious.

Great Bay Lounge. The Ritz has several restaurants on-site and we tried (or at least attempted to try, more on that later) all of them. We found ourselves at this one twice and had good sushi and a delicious short rib and a delicious piece of fish. As was the case with the entire resort, the service could be slow at times but we had the most friendly server on the property help us out both nights we dined there so we got lucky.

The gym. The gym was fairly large for a hotel/resort, and the equipment was modern and clean. It was a little too dark on the side of the gym where the weight machines and free weights were kept, though. We want to see those muscles being worked before we park our butts at the pool for the day and drink four pina coladas!

Overall lay-out. We thought the Resort was well planned and laid-out and nothing, be it the pool/beach, spa, gym or restaurants, was much of a walk from any other part of the resort.

Entertainment. There was live music at Sails (the most casual and beachy dining spot) on 3 of the 4 nights were stayed. Great way to start the night or end the night.

Location. We thought the location was great. You are 5 minutes away from Red Hook and a bunch of restaurants. The resort sits right on the Ocean overlooking St. John in the distance.

Free Internet. If you’re paying about 900 bucks a night or whatever it is for the room, surfing the information superhighway should be free and it is at the Ritz St. Thomas. All hotels should follow suit.

Cons:

Thin Walls and Floors. We could hear our neighbors stomping around at all hours of the day, and could hear our neighbor’s voices and their TV like they were in our own room. Cross your fingers for quiet people or bring earplugs as a defense mechanism.

Spotty Service. Service was up and down. There were some very friendly and fantastic people, and then some people that were just ok / indifferent. (luckily more of the former than the latter). Also, service can be very slow at times. I guess you should go in having a lot of patience and you won’t be disappointed. The Ritz should do a thorough review of the staff and make upgrades where necessary. We had a reservation at Bleuwater (their fancy place) on Friday night, and showed up 15 minutes early. There were no tables available at all outside for at least an hour, the hostess informed us. The inside of the restaurant was wide open – why would we want to sit inside on St. Thomas on a beautiful night? Clearly nobody else did. They should manage the reservation times better understanding that 9 out of 10 parties will want to eat outside.

The Beach. The beach looked like a spring break crowded mess. Not spring break in that it was rowdy, but the beach is somewhat small and they jam all of these ugly chairs side by side and back to front. I know people want to sit at the beach but they could upgrade with some addition by subtraction here.

Some Outdated-ness: Some of the cushions at Sails were torn and ripped. The men’s locker room at the spa could use a little bit of an upgrade (maybe start with the showers and steam room).

Cost. Cost, oh yes cost, a much discussed topic for this place. We knew going in it was going to be spendy. But I don’t think we got value for the money. Place is crazy spendy and we live in Manhattan like several people we met that were visiting the weekend we were there. The prices are fine if you deliver a 5 star resort.

The Final Say

Not bad at all. Lots of things to improve on. We had a good time. We’re somewhat jaded travelers perhaps. If Tripadvisor had a 3.5 star rating that would be my rating.

Hopefully Helpful Tips:

1. I went out to fetch pool chairs each morning at around 8am. At this time of the morning this was no issue as there were tons of chairs left.
2. Taxi’s in St. Thomas are mostly group affairs. Don’t be surprised if your driver stops at other resorts or just in the middle of the street to pick up another passenger. We found we could request a private taxi but note that the cost will probably be higher.
3. If you want to eat outside at Bleuwater (their fancy restaurant) you should probably specify that at the time of your booking.
4. If you are coming from the U.S. / are a U.S. citizen you don’t need a passport.
5. The ferry terminal to other islands, including St. John, is about a 5 minute taxi ride away from the resort. The ferry to St. John runs on the hour from early in the morning until late at night. The ride is pretty quick and this is a fun day excursion.
6. The airport. We had read numerous posts on tripadvisor about the need to get to the airport 3 hours early if leaving on a busy Saturday/Sunday. We were leaving on a Monday which was a U.S. holiday, and got to the airport 3 hours early and were way too early. Food for thought. The airport is pretty boring. One restaurant, a magazine place, and not much more.

Room Tip: They tried to put us in an accessible room at check in. We asked for a normal room and they gave us...

We stayed 1/15-1/18.I sent a letter to the hotel and corporate with no response. The property and staff were great. The club floor was more like a Marriott. The staff told us they cut back.At $1000 a night the prices were not cut back. If I did return I would not upgrade to the club floor. Also complimentary amenities were served on Friday, not wed.or Thurs. The price was not less during the week. The service should be consistent every day
