Mafolie Restaurant, at the Mafolie Hotel in Charlotte Amalie, is a delight. It is also a very difficult restaurant to find without a local driver, or a GPS. But once you find it, you are in for a treat.
Many come because the view from the restaurant is one of the best in the city. It's high upon a hill, a hilly with narrow, unmarked windy roads. Parking can be a challenge, no accessible parking lot and you must go down the stairs (no elevator?) to the restaurant.
Once you are in the restaurant, all of Charlotte Amalie opens up from the open air (covered) dining area. The friendly staff quickly greets you and, unless you want to sit at the bar (amazing display of lighted bottles overlooking the view below), you will get a seat with an amazing view. There are no bad seats in the restaurant.
Service is quick and courteous, but you never feel rushed. The menu selection displays typical high class Caribbean food. Both the Lobster Bisque and the Conch Chowder (creamy) are super.
While you will have one main server working your table, the whole staff seems intent on being sure you dining experience is good.
The menu offers two types of lobster and a variety of other Caribbean dishes. Our group selected both lobster plates, the wild Atlantic salmon and the Pot dinner. All were excellent.
The wine selection, though basic, certainly met our needs.
Trip Advisor asks if this is one of the "Best Restaurants" we have eaten at. The answer is no. But it will be in most peoples top 50, and that is a major accomplishment. When you combine view, food, service, price and overall quality, this is a winner.
Again, people come for the view, but the rest of the restaurant will bring you back again and again.
