We spent a week in early December on St. Croix, myself, my husband and our 9 and 10 year boys. We stayed in the villa Nita's Fancy on St.Croix. With 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, and living area we had plenty of space, and a nice patio for stargazing at night...no light pollution here! The outdoor shower was very handy. My kids loved watching the geckos, hermit crabs and birds around our villa. They weren't quite strong enough swimmers to tackle the rocky beach right off the property, but it was a great beach for exploring, with a cool little tidal "bath" that we swam in. Right down the road from the property are nice swimming beaches though, and there are great snorkeling beaches for younger kids just south of Frederiksted, only a 10-15 ride away. We travelled all over the island during our stay, and our favorite beaches for the kids were on the west side. We checked out many of the resorts on the island as well, and we feel that Northside Valley was a great value. We didn't miss TV, cell phones or internet one bit! The villas are open air, so you get to fall asleep and wake to the chorus of insect, birds, etc. It is very peaceful. There are some bugs that find their way inside, mainly millipedes in the early part of the evening, but that is to be expected in a setting like this. We almost felt like we were camping, only with a cute villa instead of a tent! Ginger was great, she taught us about many of the native flora found on the grounds and showed us the fruit trees that were in season that we could pick from, and advised us on the best beaches for the kids. We took all of her recommedations regarding rental car company, Buck Island Charter (we went on the Teroro II), etc. and they all worked out very well. Frederiksted is more limited in terms of restaurants, etc. compared to Christiansted on the other side of the island, but be sure to go to Rhythms at Rainbow Beach, right down the road from Northside, at sunset.

In our cottage at Northside Valley, we felt like we were staying in a tree house in the rain forest--so close to nature--but with a bed, bathroom, and kitchen! From the large deck, we watched hummingbirds in the morning, gazed over the tree tops at the sunset on the ocean in the evening, and did some amazing star gazing at night. Although there are eight cottages on the property, the lush foliage makes each one feel very private. If you are looking to be tucked away in an unspoiled corner of the Caribbean, then Northside Valley is for you.
If you are looking for a luxury "tourist" resort, then you will be disappointed. There is no daily housekeeping service, no AC (although you don't really need it with all the big screens and cool nights), and not even running water that is drinkable (the amenity we missed the most, but Ginger does provide big jugs of drinking water to each cottage and you can bathe and do dishes with the water out of the faucet). The road within the resort is not paved and is very bumpy, but you will understand why when Ginger explains the pains she takes to prevent soil erosion and run-off into the ocean.
The sleepy historic town of Frederiksted is nearby and there are a handful of good restaurants (most right on the beach) that offer good food at reasonable prices and even have live music on weekends.
We snorkeled every day, right off the beach and saw lots of beautiful fish and coral. It's also fun to explore the island. The historic town of Christiansted is a must-see, as is the coral reef off of Buck Island, a short boat-ride away. You can find private beaches to hike into and even off-the-wall island attractions like a bar that boasts beer-drinking pigs!
We found the islanders to be super friendly; friendliest of all is Northside Valley's proprietor, Ginger Vanderveer, who grew up on St. Croix and has an infectious affection for the place.
Northside Valley is a beautiful, unique, vacation spot for the environmentally conscience traveler, looking to get away from it all.

We enjoyed our time at Northside Valley. We were very glad we stayed here, we got the tree house and truly felt like we were sleeping in the trees, plus the kitchen was handy for cooking our own food. But don't eat in all the time there are some great places to eat all over the island. There is a bar in fredrikstead that has pizza that we are still dreaming about.
Ginger is great and will do all she can to make your stay more enjoyable. There were some storms and being in the jungle we lost power a few times, but it really added to the charm of this place. We cant wait to go back.

I wanted to treat my Mother to a relaxing and special vacation. Northside Valley was the perfect location. The grounds are stunning and it is so peaceful and quiet. The owner, Ginger Brown Vanderveer was incredible. She could not have made us more welcome. Nothing was too much trouble and it felt like staying with old friends. The villas are great and very private. We picked tangerines from our deck in the morning! If you want to escape from the stress of modern life this is the place for you.

Northside was spectacular. My girlfriend and I spent a week there and couldn't have been happier. The grounds are so thick and lush with tropical foliage. We spent a day visiting the Botanical Gardens and found that the grounds at Northside were just as beautiful. We stayed in the Lucienda Villa and it was perfect. The view from the deck was gorgeous and we spent every breakfast there just drinking in that spectacular view. Ginger was wonderful and really helped to make our stay perfect. We learned that her father built all of the Villas on the estate. She told us that he was a big admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright and built all of the villas to blend and work with the surroundings. Meanwhile, Ginger's mother cared for the grounds. During that time, while many settlers to St. Croix were clearing out the tropical foliage and planting big lawns, Ginger's mom was preserving the lush natural beauty of the estate. Trust me, it shows.

We weren't sure what to expect with an "eco-lodge" but Northside was better than we could have ever imagined. It's certainly not a full service "resort" so if you need room service and crowded pool, this definitely isn't the place for you. On the other hand, if like me, you've always dreamed of the secluded tropical getaway with gorgeous surroundings and spectacular views, you can't beat this place.

We will definitely be back.
