“Heaven on earth. Just what the doctor ordered.”

The old saying, "you get what you pay for" really rings true at Cottages by the Sea. I returned home last evening after 29 blissful days on the west end of St. Croix...all spent languishing in the sun, on the sand at Cottages by the Sea. The weather was fabulous! Less humid than other Caribbean Islands I've visited. We experienced only one day of showers. Hot and breezy each and every day.
This is what I was looking for;
Lodging so close to the shore that I could fall asleep listening to gentle surf, air conditioned quarters if the need arose, a kitchen where I could dash up from the beach to make a sandwich, a television to keep me entertained, as I wasn't there for the island nightlife, a comfortable bed with a decent mattress, daily maid service, a marvelous sea view and moderate prices.
I received all that and much more! The owner/manager, Paul could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I truly enjoyed his company and his warm willingness to please. He gave me a key to his office so I could use the computer after business hours and greeted us when we returned from the restaurants with, "Welcome home." A terrific guy who was always visible and available. At first glance, many of the cottages will appear sparse, dated and in need of refurbishing, but after all, they are beach cottages and to know them is to love them. I can't say enough about the towels! They were generous in size, high quality, abundant and white as can be. Cottage life is barefoot relaxation and ultra casual. You'll feel comfortable socializing or keeping to yourself. There is a coin operated washing machine, two big clothes lines, 3 gas grills, an outdoor shower and books galore that can be borrowed onsite. Many locals feel the beach is the best on the island and I can vouch for it. To literally step out of bed and on to the sand is what dreams are made of. The sunsets on the west end are breathtaking and we had a front row seat. Rental car parking was never a problem and there is a restaurant next door serving lunch and dinner.
Who could want for more? You must give this affordable, "sure fire winner" a try, I've already reserved 5 weeks next year.

If you're looking for a place to lay back and relax with your special some one, this is it! The beach is perfect, the hosts non-intrusive, the weather is super.
The cabins are not fancy, but are very nice, with plenty of room and all the amenities. Restaurants on St. Croix are not up to Chicago standards, but we enjoyed barbequeing instead. And the best part is taking it slowly like the Cruzans do.
St. Croix is not a party island, but if your looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. We're planning on returning again and again.

My wife and I spent 10 days there beginning on 10/18/2004. Paul (grandson of the original owners) was running things and it was a pleasure to get to know him. He was very friendly and helpful. The cottage we stayed in was called "Carnival". It was very cozy and comfortable - not plush and luxurious, mind you - it's a cottage, after all. We could open our blinds and see the ocean. We could look out an adjacent window and see the Fredrickstead Pier.

The recent hurricane carried a lot of the beach out to sea, leaving some rocks exposed. We found a decent place on the beach to go into the water to snorkel. (You can swim too, of course.) We had some good snorkeling down the coast toward the condos that are a few hundred yards away. We also had some good snorkeling up the coast on the beach where Scuba Shack is located. Go in and meet Sue while you're there. She's great.

We're planning on going back in the future, taking our entire extended family. The clusters of cottages make this perfect for several families to vacation together.

The price was fantastic. I can't imagine paying less to stay at a cottage 50 feet from the ocean where you can snorkel off the beach!

We found the Fredrickstead natives to be generally surly. But the transplants (who seem to own the restaurants, etc.) were very nice.

Go. And tell Paul (and the resident dog, Banshee) we said hello.

We stayed at the Cottages in April, and we will be staying there again in the summer! It was absolutely perfect. The people running it are wonderful, and gracious hosts. The rooms are literally steps from the beach and the little restaraunt next door is great, though a tad expensive (strictly a lunch place if you are on a budget, make use of the big kitchens inside your rooms). The downside? The rooms are not exactly posh and the bathroom was pretty small, but we weren't looking for a posh expensive resort with giant bathrooms and neither should anyone else. The beach is right there, and it's nearly all yours, and if you forgot your snorkel, no worries, they have plenty of water toys available for free, no rental. Though Fredriksted is a tad run down there is nothing that would keep me from staying here again. As long as you keep these things in mind you will have a great time, getting away from it all. A truly wonderful vacation. Two bits of advice. Don't rent a car from Fredriksted, get it at the airport, or in Christiansted, (long story). And hang out on the patio with a rum drink at sunset, trust me.
