“So Nice I took Two Trips”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

Originally booked with Caribbean Sea Adventures, but the called and told me that one of the trips I booked was cancelled and the other one I was being bumped for cruise ship passengers. They did recommend Captain Mike and Jolly Roger Charters.

I called Captain Mike and booked a half day snorkel trip to Buck Island. He has "the blue catamaran." Everyone knows it because it's easy to spot in the harbor and C'sted is a small town. He was friendly, the crew was friendly, fellow passengers were nice. It was a nice trip. They pointed out historical and natural scenery along the way and he actually turned off the motor and sailed which is pretty nice.

I had such a good trip that I came back a few hours later and did the sunset sail with him later that evening. Different crew, just as nice and they served up some bottomless rum punch.

I'd highly recommend this charter service. Call ahead or just show up on the boardwalk when you see the blue catamaran docked along side. Most likely they will be able to get you on board.

Jolly Roger Charters was very professional, but also seemed like I was going out on a boat with a friend.

“We had a wonderful sail to Buck Island!”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

We had such a great time with Captain Mike and his first mate Sofia. We chartered the whole boat for ourselves, and their price was a smidge more than the competition, but not so much that it put us off. We got great vibes from Captain Mike on the phone and decided to go with him, and we were surely not sorry. We were on the island for our anniversary and he made sure we had a great time. Pointed us to a fabulous little restaurant on the dock so we could buy some lunch to take along with us and it was as good as he said it would be. He and Sofia were friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. We listened as he told us some history of St Croix and Buck Island and chatted on a personal level with both of them as well. Fabulous day! The snorkeling is great, and Sofia gets right in the water and either tows you along with her or swims next to you. After snorkeling, we anchored near the beach and were able to eat on the shores and explore a bit before heading back. They served a fabulous rum punch on the return trip and cranked up some good tunes. Very enjoyable experience and if we ever go back, we will definitely take a return trip on the Jolly Roger!

“Great Sailing”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

Had a really nice trip to Buck Island on this catamaran. It was full of passengers from a cruise ship but didn't feel crowded. The crew of 3 (Captain Mike and mates) were friendly and spent time talking to everyone and making the experience very personal. Snorkeling the clear waters of Buck Island reef is spectacular. Rum punch on the sail back. Relaxing from beginning to end.

“Best excursion on our cruise.”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Captain Mike was awesome, laid back and super friendly. His crew consisted of two young girls, who were so much fun and they made some killer rum punch. They were very easy on the eyes too. The catamaran was great, not really huge so there weren't a million people on it. The water was beautiful and we snorkeled in a National Underwater Monument. Lots of fish and coral. It was really a great day and hope to go back the again to see Captain Mike. Bring sunscreen and be sure to put it on your back since it will be facing the sun while snorkeling. Bring water since the rum punch can't be served until after snorkeling and definitely not until your away from the National Underwater Monument.

“Loved the trip and the crew”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

This was our second trip out to Buck Island in two years. This year we chose Jolly Roger because we wanted a trip that was more intimate and personal. Mike and sisters, Sisel and Sophia, did not disappoint. We absolutely loved that we could visit with them and that they engaged all of us (old and young). They had so much knowledge to share and even corny jokes (nice, Mike!). The ride out the island was beautiful and it was fun to see how a sailboat works up close. We docked at the beach to get our snorkel gear ready and adjusted. After a bit of time flopping around in the water, we loaded back up and went around to the reef. One of the sisters took the bigger kids on a tour and the other sister towed the little kids on a ring. It was the best idea ever because they could focus on looking down without worrying about keeping up. My little one is a tiny 5 year old and she was able to fully snorkel for the first time with the Jolly Roger crew! Proud mama moment! The reef trail really can't be missed. I saw a huge school of Blue Tangs (Dory fish), a barracuda, angel fish, you name it. Others on the trip saw a nursery shark and maybe even another one. The fish are tolerant of our intrusion but still are very natural in their habitat. We sailed back and saw a turtle come up for air and then entered into a nice little island rain. We've been on bigger boats with 40 or 50 people and I can tell you we'll never do that again. We look forward to seeing Mike, Sisel and Sophia next year!

Words of advice: Bring lunch and LOTS of water (best is to bring your own big water bottle to the island to reduce waste). They have a cooler for you to put your lunch in (learned that a little too late). Suncreen is a must as is a head covering. We brought headscarf/skullcaps (bought on amazon.com) to cover our heads - floppy sunhats fly away in the wind. You do not want a sunburned head. Jolly Roger supplies all gear so you don't have to worry about anything. If you have your own snorkel gear, just bring your mask and snorkel, leave the fins at the hotel. It's not worth hassle. If you bring a waterproof camera (highly recommended), bring extra batteries. You never know! I overheard a captain last year saying he could make a killing just be keeping batteries on the boat. Be sure to catch the tarpon that hang out by the boardwalk in front of the open air restaurant. They are so cool!
