We had a strange experience at the fort. We decided to pop in and check it out after a morning of shopping in Christiansted, so it could've been our fault for not checking schedules in advance or something... But there was nobody there despite the doors being wide open! There wasn't another soul in sight, employee or tourist alike, and with the wind howling over the fort walls it was downright eerie. Needless to say we didn't spend too much time at the fort. The day we visited happened to be the day after Thanksgiving, with the town of Christiansted getting ready for Jump Up festivities, so maybe that was the reason there was nobody at the fort?
There was a sign on the front gate saying there was entrance fee of $3, but there was nowhere to pay! The room that most resembled a visitors center towards the front of the fort was locked shut. So if you're interested in learning about the fort's history, taking a tour, or getting info from the visitors center, we suggest calling ahead or at least checking online for a schedule or something.
We enjoyed the view of the harbor and the fresh bracing air all the same :)
