My friend and I were very pleased with our choice of Tamarind Reef for our stay in St. Croix. We had a lovely view of the Caribbean and Green Cay and Buck Island from our balcony and enjoyed the low-key atmosphere. We alternated between relaxing and reading on the beach and snorkeling in the reef near the shore and day or half-day outings: Buck Island by trimaran for more snorkeling, historic sites and shopping in Christiansted, and a day trip around the island. Except when on outings we ate all our meals at the Deep End Bar and Restaurant on the premises. Everything was delicious, and there was a good variety. Prices were reasonable. Service was a bit slow, but we didn't mind. We did not rent a car, but this was fine with us. The Buck Island trip left from Green Cay Marina just adjacent to the hotel, and we were picked up by Sweeney's Safari Tours for the all day trip. So we only spent cab fare one day to go to Christiansted and back for the sightseeing and shopping and to and from the airport. (I had no desire to drive on the left in a car equipped for driving on the right.) All in all it was just what we wanted for a relaxing winter get-away.

Was delighted to arrive at this quaint little hotel on the reef. Checked into my room which had no lighting. Checked out of that room and into another which had no power along the kitchen side. As I began to unpack noticed that the hangars were filthy, floors and furniture had a fine film of mildew on all. Kitchen cupboards were sticky and greasy. Sandy sand up on surfaces as if no cleaning had been done. Coffee pot broken, and no power. Advised management of issues and they assured all would be taken care of, however, upon return from work found that the coffee pot indeed was replaced and then put on the little table near an outlet. The outlet at the kitchen still not working, hangars had been replaced. No other cleaning was done. I stayed that night then moved. I immediately n otified a friend who was coming down there to stay to change her reservation.

Tamarind Reef Resort would like to thank this guest for their comments and assure everyone that we take cleaning and service seriously. We acknowledge that there was a problem with the light switch in the first room and that the room into which she was transferred was not prepared for arrival. This was a mistake and we have taken immediate steps to resolve it including a full review of procedures and additional staff training. Tamarind Reef Resort is proud of its reputation of being a friendly, well-maintained, and tranquil beachfront hotel and marina. We look forward to helping each business and leisure guest have a positive and enjoyable experience at Tamarind Reef Resort.

We stayed at Tamarind Reef Hotel for 11 years in a row with our daughter and felt like we were coming home at each visit, the last one being in 2007. We now wonder if anyone has been to Tamarind since it was sold which was late in 2007. According to the website the rates are way up, really not in line with the type of hotel that it is. The reviews on Trip Advisor seem to stop in 2006. We would love to go back, but wonder what other changes may have been made and does it still have that friendly feeling we so loved.

We spent three weeks in St. Croix, USVI, last July.

Flight

We flew with American Airlines from Montreal through Miami and then to Christiansted. Each flight lasted less than three hours and there was no delay.

We took a taxi from the airport to the Tamarind Reef Hotel at the cost of 44 US $ for less than half an hour driving.

Hotel

The receptionist at the hotel was waiting for us. We felt welcomed. A receptionist was on duty 24 hours 7 days a week; that was practical to get information or help.

The hotel is small (40 rooms), very pleasant, truly clean and directly facing the Caribbean sea, Green Cay and Buck Island. The room was large, bright and clean with a large balcony. The close and direct view on the sea was very nice but slightly obstructed by the fence when we were seated. The bathroom was small but convenient and had a shower stall only. The water pressure was a little low but we had no problem to get hot water. The air conditioning, however a bit noisy, was working well. We had no problem with power or appliances. The maid service was regular and efficient. The beach towels, like the regular towels and the linen, were changed everyday in the room.

The hotel manager, Rosalie, was very kind and helpful. One day, we need to go to a pharmacy to get medicine with a prescription. They did not accept it since it was from a Canadian doctor. She called the pharmacist for us and we finally bought our medicine.

Beach and snorkeling

The beach is sandy where the huts and chairs are located, but is very rocky on the water edge, making the entrance possible only next to the pier to make snorkeling. Swimming is not possible, only small children could soak because the water is too shallow in the lagoon. We could make snorkelling along the shore with not much current and in warm water (28 degrees C ou 87 F). There is a big coral reef with fishes and turtles. Since it was always very windy and wavy, we did not see many fishes and the water became murky a few times.

Gerry was responsible of the beach stand where we could find good snorkelling gears. He was always smiling and showed us where to make snorkeling. The huts and chairs were available for rental but Gerry always made sure that hotel guests got the priority.

We went to Buck Island on a catamaran leaving from Green Cay marina for a snorkeling trip. The coral reefs were very nice and the water very clear, although a little wavy.

Contrary to what we thought, St. Croix is not a good snorkeling destination like Bonaire, Belize, Turks and Caicos, Maldives, Bahamas or Roatan, Honduras.

Island

The island is very safe and clean. We went on a safari tour Sweny’s all around the island. Rosalie again made arrangements with Sweny’s to get a pick-up for us at the hotel. The island is mountainous and the roads are very good and well maintained. We visited the Whim plantation, the Botanical garden, the Cruzan rum distillery, Frederiksted, the rain forest, the Columbus landing point. It was a nice day tour. We went in Christiansted for shopping. There are a duty free shop Baci and a few shops to buy arts and crafts. Though, it is not the place for serious shopping.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants in Christiansted but it takes 15 minutes to get in town and taxis from the hotel are very expensive : 24 US $ each way. We choose to eat most of our breakfasts and dinners at the Deep End Grill at the hotel which was very convenient. It was open all along the day from 7:30 AM till 9:00 PM serving breafast, lunch and dinner. The food and the service were good. We went two times at the Galleon restaurant situated at Green Cay marina next to the Tamarind, very good food but more expensive, and once at the Italian restaurant Tutto Bene not too far from the hotel : 12 US $ each way. Maybe renting a car would have been a better choice to explore the island. But we were happy not to drive and to have most of our meals at the hotel.

Overall

We liked very much our relaxing stay at the Tamarind Reef hotel. We recommend St. Croix island if you are looking for a safe, quiet and clean destination.

We only stayed there one night, as we were settling on a place nearby the next day. We are kicking ourselves for not finding it sooner. Tamarind Reef sports a wide (For St Croix) sandy beach with free chairs and umbrellas for guests. Our room was no-frills - but clean with a small patio attached that looked out on the water.
There was little room for ocean swimming - but it was seaweed free when we visited and there's a large pool if you need to swim laps. If the sun gets to you there are palm trees at the edge of the beach. Snorkling equipment is available at a beach side concession stand.
After moving to our condo, we frequented the East End bar. Great food and bartenders each time. The locals who were consistently in attendance, were friendly and willing to chat. Best of all, noone screamed when we took out our laptop and took advantage of the free wireless connection to check up on things at home. (the beach guy even gave us a "frequent-beacher" discount on the beach chairs, since he saw us patronizing the bar each time we came.)
While the hotel is not a party place, there was a live band one night.
Adjacent to the Tamarind is a marina which has the Galleon - one of the best restaurants we've been to in St. Croix. French and Italian cuisine, as well as scrumptious fresh fish dishes.
If you want more casual dining, Cheeseburgers in (the land of) Paradise is just a short drive away. You won't get a better or bigger burger anywhere else.
The staff was friendly and the grounds were well-kept. Schooner Bay Market is a few minutes away for basic needs and some surprising gourmet treats as well. It's about 20 minutes to Christiansted, but so quiet, it seems like 20 miles. Definitely check this place out.

We have just returned from 6 nights at the Tamarind Reef, sans our two toddlers, in celebration of my wife's 40th birthday. About 5 years ago, we spent 4 nights there and this time, after much research, we could not find an alternative that seemed like better value on any island.

This time we rented a car, which was a wise move given the duration of our stay and the fact that we had been there before. This gave us mobility to visit other beaches, explore the island, shop for groceries, easily eat out, etc. It's not really necessary for shorter stays, though.

We found that the Deep End Bar had been renovated completely since our last stay, and the menu is now a little more upmarket. We ate there our first night. The food was delicious, although my pork tenderloin was a bit overdone. Service was good.

The rooms are very comfortable overall (aside from pillows, see comment below) and are aging quite well. Some small signs of decay are creeping in like a rusty air conditioner, peeling paint in bathroom, cracked tiles on bathroom floor, but nothing terrible.

Pluses:
+ Room rates do not cost an arm and a leg
+ Kitchenette facilities available, suitable for preparing breakfasts and light lunches
+ Right on the water; perfect views from patio
+ Never seems crowded
+ Reasonable food on premises
+ Incredible hot water/showers. You can dial in the temperature to the degree!
+ Air conditioned, although we barely used it.
+ No bugs to speak of, in room or outside
+ Beach shack with free kayaks, snorkel gear etc.
+ Beach is nice for relaxing on, for snorkeling or for wading.
+ Snorkeling from the beac
+ Can kayak out to Green Cay and snokel right around it
+ Great pool and bar. Nice beach for relaxing on.
+ Next door to Green Cay marina for Buck Island tours and the Galleon Restaurant.
+ Good security. In-room safe

Minuses:
- A little isolated if you do not have a car, but taxi rides to C'sted not too expensive
- Double storey construction means that any elephants residing above you might disturb your sleep, especially when they leave for the airport at 3am (grumble , grumble)
- Awful pillows. They were so high they gave us both stiff necks. We asked for better ones, but they did not have them.
- The guy who runs the beach shack (Jerry) can be a bit creepy (my wife's description). He always tries to persuade her to swim or sunbathe in the nude. We're not prudes, but don't need instruction in that department if you know what I mean.
- The beach can be a little breezy, which clouds up the waters for snorkeling too.
- Not a great beach for swimming.

Look, it's not the Buccaneer, but frankly we could not justify paying more than twice the room rate for not much more comfort (and bigger crowds). We like the Buccaneer's beach in terms of sand, palm trees and shelter from the wind, but there are many other nice beaches. And we still got to eat at the Terrace for one evening (it has a better view than the Galleon).

The Tamarind Reef is not for those travelers who have more money than sense and who demand to be pampered to a sickening degree. It's for independent people who desire a reasonable level of comfort, and appreciate getting good value for their money. We would go back to the Tamarind Reef in a hot minute.

I stayed at the hotel for a week and liked it very much. The rooms are in pretty good shape, the maid service is very good not to forget the security - there are surveilance cameras, security during the night and a guard at the gate from the main road.

The hotel is in a closed area near elegant villas overlooking the beach and marina. It is small enough not to have all the hoopla of a big resort but still have a nice pool, a beutiful beach and restaurant/bar that seem to be popular among the hip crowd on the island.
