My partner and I stayed at Tamarind Reef for a week to celebrate my 50th birthday in April 2014. We loved our stay from beginning to end. Yes, the views are beautiful and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the friendliness of the staff made it extra special. My birthday fell on "Disco Bingo Night" at the Deep End bar and grill, and we were treated to complimentary drinks, a birthday cake, and a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" sung by everyone in the bar! Brenda at the beach shack helped us find the perfect fit snorkel and fins, and entertained us with stories about the island and her Olympic snowboarding son.
The first three days of our trip were windy and the water was too rough to snorkel, so we rented a car and drove to the west side of the island which is protected from the trade winds; there the water was as smooth as glass, we snorkeled Frederiksted pier (amazing! check out "N2 The Blue" for guided snorkel trips) and we hung out on Rainbow beach. On the 4th day the winds finally died down enabling us to snorkel the Tamarind reef and it was gorgeous, we saw turtles, a large school of blue tang, puffer fish (some as big as a football), large purple and yellow sea fans, and plenty of other colorful reef fish.
We also enjoyed playing tennis on the well-maintained courts, kayaking to the Green Cay island, I swam a few laps in the large pool (with swim lanes, thank you!) every day, and my partner took advantage of the health club with a good variety of exercise equipment. In the evenings we watched movies on the Dish network, and we rented a DVD player from the front-desk so we could watch our own movie collection.
As a gay couple we felt very welcome here, which is not always the case in the Caribbean. Please note, this is not a high-end resort, it is low-key and chill out. The decor is simple and somewhat dated (70s era beach chic?), but I loved the simplicity and friendliness of this place. We hope to come back soon!
