“RCI Timeshare - We had a blast!”
Reviewed August 30, 2011

My husband and I (28 and 26 years old) used a guest certificate via RCI timeshare exchange. This was our first trip to St. Croix. Everyone was very friendly. We felt perfectly safe. We enjoyed the private beach location. We had a great time on the island!

The beach restaurant was a little pricey and nothing fancy (I ate a lot of grilled cheese and my husband ate a lot of steak sandwiches), but it was convenient. The beach itself was not the prettiest beach on the island, but everyday, except Friday and Sturday, it was just the two of us on what felt like our own beach. The rooms were very "island 70s" and the beds were not the most comfortable, but for the price, we knew not to expect luxury. The kitchenette was nice to have for our few grocery items. We spent very little time in our room, so it was just fine for us.

The major downside to the hotel was the boat taxi. It wasn't a bad experience or anything, just inconvenient...especially when it is raining like crazy and you have to wait 10 minutes under no cover. For the first couple of nights, we were a bit hesitant about the area where we had to wait for the boat taxi late at night, but we soon realized we were just being silly tourists. We never had any safety issues, nor were we ever approached by anyone (locals or tourists) with anything other than a smile.

Would we stay here again? If we were on a tight budget, then this is the place we would pick. If price is not a concern, the Carambola Beach Resort would be our first choice.

P.S. Rent a car (we rented from Avis--just a short walk from the hotel's boat taxi dropoff). Taxis are quite expensive and the buses are very iffy. If you stay at this hotel, be aware that there is no parking. We had a car for three days; we made separate reservations for each day, so that we could leave the car in the Avis lot.

Room Tip: Utilize the grocery taxi. Nice to have drinks and snacks in the room, plus grocery store is a cultur...

Our friends who were staying in St. Croix actually booked us at Hotel on the Cay at the last minute, so we were unable to do any research on the hotel. I personally always go to TripAdvisor to learn as much as I can about hotels and restaurants. The hotel is very average. The rooms look like they have not been upgraded since the late 70's. Very uncomfortable bed. There was no safety deposit box in our room. Room keys are still used which really tells you how badly an upgrade is needed. You have to pick up your beach towels from the front desk, and there aren't always employees there. We had a direct view from our room of a fountain type thing which did not work and had no water in it. The pool was filthy and nobody was near it. The beach was nice, except your only view was of all of the boats parked in the harbor. We tried to rent jet skis or other water activity items, but in 3 days, no employee ever came to the rental stand, so we were never able to do any water activities. Another bummer about the place is that you always have to take a small water ferry to get to the island. Some of the ferry drivers were very nice and would drop you off at other locations, or pick you up early. Some of the drivers would not let you get into the boat early (even though they would leave to go pick up employees). You are basically stranded on the cay between the hours that the boat runs. The BEST part of staying here was the bartender at the beach bar. I don't remember his name, but he always had drinks waiting for us as we approached the bar. He was friendly and knew us by name. The drinks were great. We always walked up to the bar from the beach because the servers who were supposed to walk down to us were always too busy (or too lazy) to walk onto the beach. Unfortunately, I wouldn't stay here again. There were too many other hotels which looked MUCH nicer.

This hotel has made a number of improvements since the last time we were there and the new management seems to be getting things right.

I would describe the HOTC as a gem in the rough. While the hotel is dated in appearance a few low cost updates could improve this gem. Beds were poor (I could feel the springs in the mattress), outside doors did not slide smoothly, but provded for some good daily exercise. The front doors were extremely loud when closed, which we experienced by the rude guests who liked to show up after mid-night and slam them. The bathroom faucets and toilet needed simple maintenance to correct the clogged screen and leaking tank on the interior. The shower head needed to be updated with a low flow head, not a derm abraision head, as my female companion called it. This is an area where nature should be preserved. Staff was friendly at the front desk, the bar staff were cold. We explored the entire island and were shocked with all the trash at the north end where at one time tennis courts existed. I did find some amuzement to find a plastic chair strapped to a wood pallet via rope, resting on the extreme north end of the island, an example of what I call, "Island Engineering". We noticed rooms on the north end and a very pretty miranda area which appeared to be vacant and run down. I was also shocked to see a beautiful mahogany tree cut down during our stay to displace the island egrets, who had taken up residency and were leaving there mess on a walkway. The sport rental shop owners were very friendly and helpful, the ferry captains were also very friendly with the exception of one. Mary, who operated the front store was very helpful and took us under her wing during our stay. On our first day, I noticed a few locals who arrived for the Sunday music and was a bit nervous about leaving my wallet under my blanket, but kept an eye on it while bathing in the beautiful harbor waters. Within an hour, a DJ who was entertaining reported a "lost wallet", which apparently was lifted (Unless those pesky egrets have a thing for wallets). From then on I carried my cash in a zip lock bag in my swimsuit. Overall, the HTOC is in an identity crisis and could stay a hybrid timeshare/local hangout, or be upgraded to a 5 star island, depending on managment and the market place. Please keep this island clean and rude/inconsiderate/trash leaving people, stay home.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing east or south on the 3rd floor and bring a set of ear plugs

Most of the staff with the hotel were very nice. However they were unable to help very well with phone numbers to different activities or general information. The staff at the beach bar were very rude and unhelpful. Any time you order a drink you seem to be inconveniencing and annoying them. Buy your own drinks in town and bring them to the beach with you. Don't waste your time at the beach bar. Overall the hotel was clean and comfortable, just needs updating. The beach and the island are great enabling you to snorkel around the entire island.

I would characterize this resort as being in a state of recovery. Every indication is that it was on the decline for some time and has recently been experiencing a period of upgrades and improvements. Presently, the resort is adequate with the more important upgrades having been addressed. The air conditioning worked, the beds were comfortable, the appliances were clean and worked, the flooring was clean and fresh, and the shower/tub were tiled and clean.

With this said, some amount of detail improvement work is still needed. While the work that is still remaining did not affected our comfort or the enjoyment of our vacation, it does contribute to the feeling that things can still be improved upon. The difference, in my opinion, is that the work that has been performed on the resort so far communicates a feeling that these remaining and minor deficiencies will be addressed with time.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. While our room provided for all the standard needs, others that we checked in with had issues that were resolved to their satisfaction. In fact, they were moved to twice, at their request, to arrive at a room that satisfied their requirements.

I spent 6 months in the Caribbean and stayed in many hotels in Puerto Rico and in the Virgin Islands. This hotel is on par if not better than the norm. For instance, the moist Caribbean environment imparts a certain amount of wear on the characteristic wrought iron trims. This resort is not a Gold Crown property, but it is clean, friendly, and located in the heart of the most entertaining spot on Saint Croix.

Room Tip: Change rooms if not reasonably satisfied.

Rooms are out dated and dirty. When we arrived we had no towels in the room. It took over a day of constant phone calls and trips to the front desk just to get two towels. Out tv also did not work which did not seem like a bad thing until we had a day of bad weather. No attempt was made to fix, replace or move us to a room with one that worked (the hotel was not busy and there were multiple rooms open). Over all bad experience do not come here!
