My boyfriend and I just returned from our stay at the The Buccanner Hotel in St. Croix, and I think we'd both agree it's probably the best option for anyone's stay in on the island -- families, couples, etc. Although we didn't get to see the other options while there, from the research I did before (including reading these reviews!) I found this the best choice. The studio rooms close to the beach are private and comfortable, and offer all the ameneties needed (even bug spray -- which you'll need at night!). Some of the views are a WHOLE lot better than others, and I would push for one if you can. (We were told the hotel was booked when we asked to change -- however, when on the beach, it seemed as if we were the only ones there, and we were there almost at high season - 12/8-12/13). The hotel has a very 'old' feel, so if you're looking for 'hip' or 'chic' this is not the place, however, I don't think there are any hotels that are 'new' on the island anyway. The property is sprawling, and offers many options (two pools -- the one near the spa is bleek, and the one by the beach is small, but nice), two beachs (one is better for swimming because there are reefs on the other), plus tennis courts, golf, spa, fitness room, general store, shop, etc. The hotel is also in relatively close proximity to town and restaurant options, which is good because taxi prices increase as you go further away from the hotel. The food at the Terrace at at the hotel was very good. Prices seem to be high -- but if you're from NYC as we are, we were used to it. As far as restaurant options outside the hotel, the concierges were fairl helpful in making those reservations for us. There were a few people doing the booking, and one of them actually said she'd make us a reservation at one place for sunset -- only to realize (after we got off the phone) it's closed for the season (Waves at Cane Bay). Unfortunately, we didn't find this out until we went back to the room to get ready at 4pm and then had to scramble for another option. Other than that, I found the other concierges, specifically Carol, very helpful and almost overly cheery. We liked Kendricks in town -- romantic and quaint setting and good food. Duggans Reef was also DELISH and we sat/ate outside right on the beach. (Remember that bug spray!) Tutu Bene was OK -- but if you're die-hard Italian, skip it. Savant was VERY eclectic, and also nice. Ask to sit in the garden. We also did a day trip to Buck Island, which had the BEST beach, sand wise, and water color. We went with Big Beard and were pretty satisfied. Could've used more time on the actual reef, but I suppose we might've had it if the seas weren't so rough, and if there were more people on the tour that day. Overall, the trip was very relaxing and the island is beautiful.

We just spent Thanksgiving week at Buccaneer.
Service was excellent. View from room 341 - magnificent. Never too crowded on the beach even during Thanksgiving week. Kids like Kids Camp when Ms Carol was presented and so-so when she was substituted. Mermaid lunch restaurant was very good for its price. Main Terrace restaurant had excellent service but food was average.
Marty knew about sport activities on island and snorkeling more then guide book from Fodors, Frommer, etc.
Cons: Mosquitoes bites. We were bitten terrible and we saw a lot of people on the beach and in airport with mosquitoes bite marks.
Tennis facility is overrated. To pay $16-20 for court full of cracks and wet…

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Buccaneer 11/12 through 11/17/05. The hotel was nice and charming if a bit dated. We had a standard room in the main building, not one of the ocean front rooms. These rooms vary in size (we were fortunate to have one of the larger ones) and are a walk to the beach. The bed was HARD and the walls were very thin. Everytime someone walked out of their room we heard the door slam, footsteps and conversations.

The staff at the hotel was so friendly and helpful. We had several incidents (see below) and the hotel staff tried to remedy each situation and make our trip a little better. Larry the bartender, Carol the concierge, and Elizabeth the general manager really were noteworthy.

We won't be going back to this hotel because St Croix just wasn't for us. It is a nice island with friendly people but there are very few activities on the island and all of them require relying on vendors who we were not impressed with at all on this trip. We had a sunset sail that returned to shore before sunset. We had reservations for a trip to Buck Island to snorkel and it was canceled by the tour operator because of the threat of waves and stormy weather. As it wound up it was the only clear day we had our entire trip and we became convinced it was cancelled because there were not enough people to go out.

We had one good trip and that was the jeep safari with Tam Tam Tours. It saved our trip! The tour is advertised in town on posters, there are no flyers or anything for the tour.

We rented a car for 4 days and I really think it was worth it. Driving on the left is easy and you don't have to rely on taxi drivers to drive you around. We got a taxi for dinner one night and that was enough for us. Also, we were able to drive around and see the island and stay out without worrying about timeframes for taxi pickups and additional fees.

Overall, it was nice to get away but I wouldn't recommend the island unless you are a beachsitter who likes to sit back, read and watch the waves. If you like to go and do and see then find another island.

We had the wonderful opportunity to visit St. Croix and The Buccaneer for the first time based on information from this site. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. The staff at The Buccaneer was terrific from the moment we arrived down to the taxi drivers that they arranged for us.

Breakfast was great. The view from our oceanfront room was fabulous. Everyone we met in Christiansted and at the hotel was very gracious and welcoming.

Our many thanks to Karim, Maria, Cheryl, Bachelor, William, and Alphonso. You guys made our week!

Just came back from a fantastic week at the Buchaneer. I found myself wondering if I stayed at the same resort the people who're written negative reviews did. I was particularly nervous about the service, as several reviews said that the staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. Our experience was exactly the opposite. Perhaps word went out to the staff to be nicer, but every person we met was great, from Pearl at the front desk, to Leon the great driver, and Ella in the cocktail lounge (too many to remember - Stephanie and Ruby in the Terrace were great too). Anything we wanted - rides around the facility, snorkelling gear, more towels, Ice, reservations, and help booking rental cars and side trips, was at our fingertips. The Concierges suggested good places to see on the island, we got several tips on great restaraunts in town (Kendricks and Savant were fabulous), and the Spa -- oh, the spa .. don't miss it.

We were there during the slowest season of the year, I believe, so the place was very quiet -- much to our liking. We had the lovely beach mostly to ourself, never had a problem getting prime lounges with access to the shade, and within a few feet of our room -- one of the beautiful 'doubloons' practically on the water. (We got upgraded from the oceanfront, a nice touch). Dinner reservations were never a problem, although some of the hotter places in town were busy, so I recommend reservations for them ... in high season both the resort and in-town places must be packed.

The room was fabulous -- great views, privacy, wonderful bathroom with Jacuzzi, walk-in closet, private toilet, two sinks, King bed, a patio to die for, a fridge, comfortable furniture. It was spotless. With the exception of a few geckos and some centipedes, and the occasional mongoose, we had our own private retreat.

Food at the terrace is very good -- some of the places in town were a bit more interesting, food-wise, but you can't go wrong at the terrace. Breakfast is fantastic, a late buffet and you're set until dinner. If you like tropical drinks, for sure try the 'Cruzian confusion' .. wow, the Mermaid Bartender should be commended .. a great invention.

We never played tennis or golf - the exercise room is great and the jogging paths too. Never dipped a toe in the pool, although it looked good for kids. The Caribbean waters are just too inviting to waste time at a fresh-water pool.

Snorkelling off the mermaid beach was terrific -- particularly for strong swimmers who can get out to the off-shore reef. Oh, but a word to the meek -- there are baracuda in them there waters. On our last day my wife saw a 5-footer right off the pier .. I did the rest of the swim alone. (We're told baracuda attacks on humans occur between rarely and never ... but they're scary looking beasts.)

Definately take the Buck Island trip -- We did the half day (I did it twice, I liked it so much) .. a fun boat trip with Mile Mark (great staff, funny captain, good equipment) ... and a fantastic reef.

That's it .. a great week, we'd go back in a second.

My husband and I spent the first half of our honeymoon at the Buccaneer in early June. As soon as we arrived, the service was impeccable. We were greeted with punch or rum punch to help us cool off as we checked in. And from then on, we were relaxed and loving the island.

I am honest reviewer and take traveling as an adventure. I know things are not going to be perfect but your time and money should be met with service and what you feel you are paying for. Here at the Buc, we felt the grounds, the room, the service and the location met all our expections. We had a beach front room (forgot what the term is) near the beachside pool. Very large and clean. The AC worked great. Maid service was wonderful and they were all our friends. The sound of the rain on the roof had me wearing eyeplugs a few nights but I am a light sleeper. It was great to fall asleep to the rain but when it was quiet and then it came down, I was up! My husband snored through it all.

FOOD - The buffet breakfast everyday was great. So filling and so many choices most days we did not eat lunch. I love grits and to have them on the menu was like home. The restaurant is expensive and not many choices for dinner (hubby doesnt eat a lot of meat, chix or fish). The poolside grill was closed for the summer. The beachside grill down the hill was open and had great stuff for lunch, sandwiches, salads and a wonderful blended rum drinks. We went into town for most of our dinners. SAVANT is AMAZING! I would love to hire the chef as a personal chef back home. We ate there twice. The VI Brewing Company is a great place to listen to music outside, have some beers and your typical greasy fare. Mostly locals and met great people there. Tutto Bene was good but nothing amazing. If you are looking for just pasta here, they dont have it. Everything has meat in it and the pasta dishes are few. But it is air conditioned inside and a nice cool down.

TOWN - St Croix (christiansted side) is a small town with some shopping and restaurants. You probably only need one morning or afternoon to adventure about. We found the locals here much nicer than they are on St John and St Thomas. It is funny that each island claims they are the better island. St John has the better beaches, hands down, but St Croix has the better people and overall service.

TO DO - Dont miss the free rum night at the Buc. Great time to meet other guests. The golf course is good and empty when we were there...but it was 99 degrees and we were probably the only crazy ones willing to be out there. Snorkeling is minimal at the hotel. We loved just floating on the mats out in the water. Even when the sky opened up and rain came down, floating at sea was the best. Spa services are nice too. Got a great massage! If you need at taxi ask for THE BACHELOR. He will treat you well and be there for you for your entire stay. Enjoy mon!

From the minute I arrived at the Buccaneer with my friend for a five-day vacation, we were treated as though we were the only guests there! The fruit punch and coffee in the lobby were just the beginning--within the first second of being checked in, we were upgraded to a luxury ocean view room! The room was incredible (and spotless!) and the bellman made an effort to show us every single amenity, right down to opening each drawer to show us what was inside (loved the in-room umbrella--it saved us on the one rainy night we had!)! Even though the property is HUGE, it's no problem--we were given maps, guides, the works, plus, there's a courtesy van that will transport you anywhere on the property at any hour (say hi to Ken, the best driver around!)! The concierge was amazing at reccommending and booking day trips, and she even called daily to see if we were enjoying our day! The grotto pool is great, with complimentary snorkel gear and floats, and we even had a free scuba lesson! All-in-all, if you're looking for a vacation on a beautiful island where you're treated like a star, look no further than the Buccaneer!
